My Research and notes FOR Freedom of Speech
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION LAW 1998
Objective to a person - how their freedom of speech is used depends on the person
Gives people the ability to fight for things they believe in: e.g. pollution, gay rights, suffragettes, black oppression. Allows minds to argue and debate to make a better world.
If freedom of speech was available to everyone, then it would have helped already.
When freedom of speech is oppressed it is NOT freedom or speech, e.g. Hitler. He repressed the right of speech so that many of the Nazi fighters had no idea about the concentration camps. This dictator never allowed freedom of speech, he demanded things of people and he repressed their rights.
Freedom of speech still allows censorship.
I believe we are given the illusion of freedom of speech, but we are oppressed from this right. If we had this right, then people wouldn't be killed for things they have said.
what is the purpose of artists and creativity when you are given no freedom to explore your thoughts and ideas.
Copyright - if a picture or likeness of something is recreated, it is copyright. When using copyrighted works for criticism, humour or education, it does not infringe on copyright law.
"The first step to fixing any problem is admitting there is one," if you are intimidated from speaking out then problems will never be solved.
We have the illusion of freedom of speech because people are too scared to speak out, we fear getting in trouble for it, for being reprimanded, caught, jailed, fined, prosecuted, beaten, etc etc..
Extremists aren't listened to, that's why they go to extreme lengths. If freedom of speech was went about properly, then these things wouldn't happen. The extremists go straight to the extreme so that we are forced to listen to what they have to say. We don't listen because we feel one or two people's thoughts and opinions are nothing in comparison to a nation... But what if thousands more felt the same but were too scared to speak out?
We are scared of freedom of speech as we don't have it. We fear the things we say, we censor ourselves and everything we put on the internet. Having an opinion is scary, it's dangerous because we don't know what consequences will come.
Examples:
Satire: Charlie Hebdo - 12 murders at a French comic strip/magazine company. 4 of those were cartoonists.
Looney Tunes: used animation to make a joke of Japan, they were being really racist during a war. They used freedom of speech in a violent way, what they were doing was not right. But neither was what the Japanese were doing. But Warner Bros used satire to portray their opinion of the Japanese's actions.
The Tories pay £100,000 a month just for our Facebook information. They watch what we post and message, what pages we like and who we talk to. We consider Facebook a place to freely express our opinions without backlash, yet even there, the Government pry and monitor and controlled and censor.
Government promised not to change anything for the students, months later they changed University course charges to £9,000 a year! Students rallied up, they protested and raged, they made stands and camped out in the streets, It went on for weeks and weeks. Yet nothing changed. No one cared. The students were controlled and intimidated by the police force to stop protesting. Just like the London Riots. If we truly had the freedom of speech we are lead to believe we have, then this wouldn't be a problem in the first place. The students were not allowed to speak their voiced and weren't listened to by the government, so nothing changed.
V for Vendetta - a film about an uprising of people that demand for their voices to be heard, shows how words inspire people, they empower people to speak up, to be heard, to make a change for what they feel is right. Words alone, spoken, written down, drawn, expressed through art, can change how you view a person. Politicians and the government use this all the time to make you believe what they fight for is right for you, the fight for your vote in them. Freedom would give you the empowerment to say what you feel is right, what isn't said but is always thought. Make a better life, country and world.
I will finish this argument by stating simply that I was not given the opportunity to debate for the side I wanted to, and that in itself is repression of freedom of speech. Not to say that I don't agree with freedom of speech, but this would have been a very different argument had I been on the opposing team.

This in an unlit render of my character, with a small camera pan around to show it from different angles and giving you an idea of the detailing on the back.
Final Rendered Image - this is with lighting added and the character fully coloured and textured.
To improve upon this next time I would UV unwrap the character and make full textures that will add to the character and give it a better look. Hopefully.
Step-by-step texturing/colouring of my character and the staff.
Before adding colours, I decided that my character needed something more before it was finished, so I designed a staff (designs, sketches and other ideas are in my journal).
The first image shows the staff as it is without the vines I wanted to add winding around it. It also shows a little detail I added the to back of the dress to hold it together.
The second image shows the process of making the staff, using a CV Curve and mapping out the points, which I then moved using the vertex/points, to wind around the pole. I then had to add a cylinder to the first point on the curve and extrude it (with both the faces of the cylinder and the curve selected.) This created a winding effect when the divisions were put in.
I used the references shown above to make sure I modelled the shoulders, back and collar bones to look somewhat realistic. I think over time of working on them I achieved the best I could with this.
Next came the modelling of the eyes, so I found a reference images and followed the tutorial from Youtube (that I posted above.) I made one eye, mirrored it and placed them on the face, merging it to one object and finishing my character ready for colouring.
I started by modelling the chest are a bit more, using an image of Keira Knightly in a tight corset-like outfit as a reference for the top of the dress and chest area. It helped me model something more realistic and showed me how the body forms especially with a corset on.
To model the bow, I started by thinking about the type of bow I wanted and searching for something for a reference online, I found two bows that I like and I wanted to recreate one of them. The first was the simplest to make in Maya but it wasn't very interesting to look at in comparison to the second one. The time constraints meant I picked the first bow.
The arms are a little bigger now but they still need elongating and thickening. The body fits better as it is now and the curved edges are a lot softer. Furthermore I prefer the dress now to what it was with out the layers, it gives more detail and makes it more visually interesting. To improve on my character I think I'm going to model a bow to fit at the back of the waist band.
This is a print screen from the start of the modelling process, behind the model are the two references I remade to use in order to make the character who I wanted it.
When the references were designed, I didn't draw them at the same time or align them so the proportions are different and it made it difficult to model in the software. Next time I will sketch them next to each other, using the ruler tool in photoshop to align the proportions for my character.
The second print screen is the same character model, I've just made it easier to view. The problem with it is that it's too wide, so when it's mirrored the character is abnormally wide. And the arms are far too small for the head. I am going to adjust the arms some more until I'm happier with the size and length of them and try to thin out my character ready for mirroring.
The original character design. I started with the rough design I had from the character design session with Simon. However the arms and head were out of proportion although this was part of the design, I didn't like it.
Secondly, I draw the head turned to the side and the body at a slight angle, so that I could show the shape of the head. However this then meant I couldn't use it properly as a reference when modelling in Maya.
So I redesigned my character, you can see the sketches and designs in my journal.
It’s always good to start your perspective drawing with a flat line, called the “horizon” as it represents the line at which your eyes naturally rest on an image. At each end of the horizon line, plot out two points, these will be the points you use to map everything out.
We started with a standard block and progressed to 3 buildings and then to room.
My work from this session came out looking really well, the sketches made sense and gave the impression of depth within the scene. However my second and third drawings weren't finished. I wanted to be able to add windows and doors and pavements to the second drawing and then add shading (to give more depth) to my third drawing. However I didn't have time to achieve this.
