so as an indian who is very very tired of boring bollywood movies with the beautiful and sometimes weak heroine caught between two aggressively heterosexual males can i just say that Kapoor and Sons was such a refresher.
it’s an exceedingly REAL film about REAL issues and it’s so far from stereotypical bollywood. it includes
- serious family drama. one of the main characters (sidharth malhotra) feels severely overlooked by his family (and kind of is) and the other one (fawad khan)hates the ‘perfect son’ mold he’s put into
- gay representation!!!!!!!! i’m serious!!!!! in a mainstream bollywood movie in a country where it’s still illegal to be out!!!!!!!! and it’s really well done!!!!!!! basically a game changer for lgbtqia+ people in india and beyond
- adorable musical numbers!!! but none of them are unecessary like they all serve to enhance the plot or characters in some way–they’re not at all filmy or overly produced, they mesh perfectly with the flow of the movie.
- a lot of plot twists. not cheap shots, either, but legit plot twists that made me gasp out loud as i watched it
- literary elements. in a mainstream bollywood movie. seriously. there are foils and archetypes and symbols and poetic unity and i was LIVING. also, the two main characters are novelists which becomes really meta by the end.
- it stars these three adorable humans who are incredible actors and whose characters are REALLY well fleshed out. x
all in all it’s a spectacular film and basically a game changer in a lot of ways (in my not-so-humble opinion) for bollywood. it meant a whole lot to me. watCH it but keep tissues nearby seriously you will need them.
