FUCK, I though it was just another lucky meme but LISTEN. Since a week ago I was waiting a phone call to confirm me if I got a job or not in my university. hands down, the saddest episode of any show i’ve ever watched. the plot line in itself is heartbreaking, but knowing the cast was actually mourning that loss in real life, and that the emotions were real, was so so hard to watch.

Moreid nonsense aside, pre-prison Spencer is kind of like the team’s baby brother. He’s only 25 years old here—a good 8-10 years younger than everyone else. He’s probably 120 lbs sopping wet. He has to have his fitness test requirements waived in order to remain a part of the field team. He failed his firearms evaluation. They keep him behind them when they go into crime scenes. He rarely makes arrests. He’s Hotch’s golden boy.

I would say that, in canon (pre-season 6/7 especially), the team has a collective sense of responsibility for Spencer, because they have plenty of evidence to suggest that he can’t really hold his own in the field. There’s an unspoken agreement that someone has to be looking out for him, and that the team has to keep tabs on him to make sure that he doesn’t get hurt, since he’s younger and less capable.

I’m sure Derek would be torn up if she were abducted, but it’s not really the same in his eyes—JJ is a well-trained, extremely capable Grownup Agent, and her decisions are her own. He’d probably tell Spencer not to blame himself for JJ’s decision to split up, because there was nothing he could’ve done to stop her.

But since the roles are reversed, I think that Baby Brother element kicks in. If you’re an older sibling, you know that you catch heat for any stupid thing your younger sibling decides to do while you’re watching them. “Why did you let him do that? Why didn’t you stop him?” And I think this is kind of the same thing—I think Derek sees the splitting up as JJ violating the social terms of the BAU team by agreeing to go into the field with Spencer and not keeping tabs on him.

I don’t think blaming Reid’s decision on JJ is fair to JJ at all (she’s a field agent, not a babysitter), but I think that they definitely have an unparalleled tendency to coddle Reid and try to keep him out of harm’s way (which makes sense ig), so I think the feelings would be different if JJ were the one snatched up.
