Just a note before we start: Please do not contact AO3 or OTW about this issue. Over 14,000 people have seen this info and they’ve been contacted repeatedly. Trust me, they already know.
Remember the Goodreads fanfic debaucle? Well, another site is now doing it, only they’re worse. I just found...
Yeah, Yeah, I haven’t been around in ages. I know... Stuff’s been going on in my personal life I’d really prefer not to talk about and I havent the time to do anything really with tumblr. That being said, hi, I’m alive, I haven’t lost my account details. I’m still here. What got my attention to this is what happened (to sum it up, a site has been using bots to harvest fanfictions and like works from popular sites and publishing them there with ad revenues and charged access. PLEASE refer to the linked post for the full story. Anyway, back on track).
I’d like to assume recently, and it really rubs me the wrong way when people milk money out of others’ labors of love or hell, even out of their base needs. I really dont want to go on a tangential rant, so I’ll stay on topic. Anyone who steals the work of others to turn a profit is sick and disgusting. It’s one thing if you have permission or you are only doing it to bring attention to an underappreciated artist (yes, this fits here), granted that only works if you take the work down when asked and give the original creator full credit.
The scum suckers who try and exploit people for money for things they have no right to be getting even a damn penny for disgust me and I hate that the world even even encourages this behavior. Have you ever heard the proverb that goes along the lines of “A smart man adapts, a wise man steals?” My point is right there. It is one thing to use someone else’s work as a foundation or a part of your own, but if you try to tout work you’ve never done as your own--- Actually, I’ll just leave it here. I’m starting to rant. Just.... look at the attached post and please signal boost this to work towards an end of this atrocious practice
