Will’s ears perked up and he was awoken by the sound of his wife’s alarm. Alex had classes early on Fridays, which meant that he had to hear that alarm earlier than he wanted to every week. Without opening his eyes, the shepherd tiredly wrapped his arms tighter around his mate, not wanting her to get up.

Rey nodded in understanding. “That we’re definitely more than happy to help with. In fact, I know your mother will ecstatic to see you two.” His ears perked momentarily to see if there was any hint of the pups finally being asleep. They had been extra rowdy today. It seemed rather quite though so he was sure Grace would back soon.
The female shepherd had just come down the stairs, in fact, and she walked in right after he said that. She smiled and hugged her husband, giving him a kiss on the forehead.
Then, Grace turned to Will and Alex. “It’s good to see you two,” she said, giving each the same hug treatment before sitting down in another chair.
Alex smiled from the hug. It was comforting to still have a mom around. It had been a while since she was able to come over due to school. “It’s good to be here,” she replied. “How’s everything going with you guys?”
“It’s busy as always. The girls are doing well in school and the pups keep us busy the rest of the time. What about you all?”
Will looked between Alex and Rey, then back at Alex. “Well,” he asked his wife quietly, “should we start with the bad news?”
Alex’s small smile disappeared. “Yes… I suppose it would be best to get that bit out of the way,” she replied quietly.
Rey glanced at Grace before giving the two a sympathic look.
The female shepherd looked at the couple, a bit confused.
Will sighed and gently squeezed Alex’s arm. “We found out not so long ago that Alex’s mom died.” Despite seeing the shock in his mother’s face, he went on. “She had a relapse into her drug habits and it didn’t do her too well. Rey was the first one I told. I told him not to tell you because I wanted to do it face to face like this.”
Grace’s eyes clouded with tears and she stood up and went over to throw her arms around her daughter-in-law. “Oh Alex, sweetie. I’m so sorry,” she told the fox, pressing the side of her muzzle against Alex’s cheek.
Alex wrapped her returned the embrace and tried not to cry herself. She cried so much already she didn’t want to put Will and herself through more grief. After hugging for a good minute or so the vixen spoke. “We haven’t arranged a time for her funeral yet. We have to wait for the body to be released.”
“Don’t you worry about any of that,” she replied. “Rey and I can deal with planning so that you don’t have to put yourself through any more than you have to.”
Grace still held on, rubbing the vixen’s back softly. Her motherly instincts didn’t let her pull away until a couple minutes later.
