Ranger's Apprentice Fandom Name

I swear there was a discussion about this a while back, and we had established that we were calling ourselves “Rangers".

Maybe we need a proper vote on this - like we have a set period of time to submit answers to a blog, then these submissions get turned into different posts and the post that has the most notes after another set period of time is the fandom name?

I dunno, it’s just a suggestion since everyone is suggesting names and we seem to be getting nowhere.

So i have an odd question, what do rangers sleep in do they just keep their cloaks on or what?

Well if we're out on a mission or in the field then we'll just sleep in whatever we're wearing. The Ranger uniforms are designed for comfort, so it's not too much of hassle. However, when I'm at home I do have an impressive collection of nightshirts. I used to complain about sleeping in my clothes when I was an apprentice, and ever since Halt has insisted on buying me nightshirts for my birthdays. He thinks he is hilarious.

What's your spirit animal?

I would definitely say a fierce wolf that prowls in the night, hidden by shadow and ready to strike at any moment… Halt however, has told me that I rather have the spirit of an overexcited puppy. Figures.

Hey, lovely fans of RA! So, I know a big thing in fandoms is ships, and I’d like to know what your opinions are on popular/particular pairings and some of your favorites! Personally, I tend to ship non-canon, but I’d like to know how people see the relationships of canon-pairings. I recently had an interesting sort-of discussion about the GilanxJenny ship that made me like it a bit more…ANYWAY, drop me a line!

does it make me a bad person if I ship keren and alyss? i just think they had a lot more chemistry than she does with will a lot of the time, and i feel like they would work in the same way as in a dramione fic. you know? like she could really help him move past his issues and learn to treat people better, but at first he’s actually scared of genuinely falling for her and she’s feeling this big expectaton from everyone that she gets together with will and okay maybe i’m just a sucker for angst and drama.

Sometimes I don’t like GilanxJenny because I feel like John Flanagan said “oh wow here we have two slightly important characters who have hardly and common interest and chemistry(that’s shown anyway) and there only like 7 years age-wise apart and basically they just like each other on a physical level. Oh wow let’s make them a couple”

It just annoys me. Because during the later part of the series it’s like he tries to pair up everyone and they all get married to like the first person they ever loved and wow that just kinda pisses me off

for the purposes of this ship i like to give gilan a tragic love story in his past involving a manipulative, lying, katherine pierce type woman who broke his heart, which is why he seems to gravitate towards jen… who is innocent and kind will love him back, and he never has to pretend for. and jenny is just a complete romantic, i think it would have been out of character for her to not have fallen for gil. also, he makes her feel safe, wanted, and he makes her laugh which is a big plus. and while i agree it’s kind of unoriginal and obvious for them to actually be endgame just like that, idk. i can’t help shipping them with a passion

Alyss

I have an inkling I may be voicing an unpopular opinion, but as it stands now, I like Alyss. She’s strong and perceptive and resourceful. She may not have extensive combat skills, but she knows how to give a boost to those who do. I could do with her being somewhat less breathtaking, but then where would the romantic tension come from?

On the official RP they never posted ‘hey follow Gilan’ BUT HEY YOU OUT THERE OTHER RPRS THIS IS THE GILAN RP BLOG and since no one is rping with me and doesn’t know of my existence(lol like in real life lol) so I’m just posting in character, ehem as myself for now. Another thing I should mention: I’m not trying to compete or whatever with the askgilan blog. I feel like there’s two ways fans perceive Gilan: 1) he’s a serious ranger 2)whoops we let a really skilled really tall 7 year old into the corps and it’s cool because he’s cool. This blog more represents the later while I feel like askgilan is more the former. But I want to Roleplay with any of you others out there(ericc, halt, Alyss), and I’ll keep it sane I swear haha.

How often do you get to see Jenny? Do you keep in touch when you're not around?

Not often enough is the short answer to that first question. The only times I get to see Jen is when I have business in Redmont, which isn’t terribly often. We do keep in contact of course; her letters are the highlight of my week and I wish it were possible to write more often, but Whitby is a big fief and I’m kept very busy. *sigh* Sometimes I even find myself trying to invent excuses to go and visit Redmont, just so I can see her.

Have you been knighted? How far in relation to normal battle school training did you get learning with McNeil?

Knighted? Heavens no. It’s not the Ranger’s way to accept titles, and even if it was, I never wanted to be a knight. The sword was just something I grew up with… I trained with my father from the day I could hold up a wooden stick. McNeil I met a little later, and he was the one who really gave me a passion for sword work. In relation to Battleschool I’m sure that I’ve at least completed the course. Bear in mind that I continued to learn from McNeil during my time as Halt’s apprentice, and I don’t mean to brag but there are very, very few Battleschool trained knights that could best me in an honest sword fight.

Good Characters Are Essential

Five chapters into The Burning Bridge and the overall sense is this: Gilan is a flipping fantastic character. I love how well developed he is. At first glance, he’s entirely Halt’s opposite: young, lighthearted, humorous. He’s great to be around and highly considerate, making sure Horace felt at ease. Yet as the chapters progress, you see so much more of him. The occasional mannerism that so obviously labels him as Halt’s apprentice shows that while he may smile much more than his former master, he certainly didn’t escape Halt’s teachings unchanged. My favorite scene so far though has to be when he taught the double knife defense. Calling Will out just like Halt would, then demanding action when Horace hesitated. It’s clear that when there’s business to be attended to, Gilan’s all business. Jokes are for down time. Yet once he has the apprentices’ attention, his teaching becomes more lighthearted. Still serious, but cheerful as well. He’s a wonderful character, skilled, considerate, vibrant, but knows when the games need to end. It’s a kind of maturity I’d be tempted to say surpasses even Halt’s, because he can choose when to act how, and does so perfectly.
