âThatâs definitely something,â Jett said as I opened the door to my bedroom and revealed my passion project, a marble run that started right above my window and wrapped around the whole room multiple times. It had string and magnets to keep it in the air, electricity powered by rain water I collected over the years for two small motors, and ended by going into the kitchen to start a second contraption I put together to automatically make whatever meal I had planned.
âWhat would you like to snack on?â I asked, a smug smile on my face. âI can set up garlic toast, pancakes with bacon and eggs, and grilled cheese with tomato soup.â
Jett rolled his eyes, his expression still open and pleased as he examined my work. âGarlic toast is fine. How long did this take to put together?â
I shrugged and moved the kitchen components around, putting bread, garlic, and butter on different starting points. âI had the plans for it ready for over a year, but my folks didnât like the idea of so many things going on there own. My uncle owns this place, but heâs only here for family stuff, so I got free reign while Iâm learning for Advanced Studies. Even have a room for my best friend. Itâs our little dorm thatâs not a dorm.â
âMust be nice to have that kind of freedom.â
âOf course. Itâs how Iâve been able to tinker with things for class and make my own things for funâŚâ I slammed the palm of my hand into my face then let out a sigh. âSorry. I forget that Dari arenât usually this free.â
Jett put a hand on my shoulder then smiled again. âSome get either lucky or save enough money to get their own home out of the reservations. I have a dorm on campus. Itâs shared, but thereâs plenty of space for us.â
I flipped the switch to start the marble run then sat down on the floor. âYeah, but thatâs not the same as all this, is it?â
Jett plopped next to me with a thunk and closed his eyes for a few seconds. âI decided to study physics and emerging technology in the hope that Iâd be able to find a good paying job someday. One year down, and there are a few more places looking for Earth Dari. Now, theyâre thinking about starting new campuses just for Dari and Chao. It was a big step forward for them to allow non-Humans, but now that theyâve seen how little they can pay us compared to Humans, we might be segregated again.â
I put my hand on Jettâs and looked into his dark brown eyes. âI may not know racial segregation, but Astrid, my best friend, was the first person to welcome me into a queer circle. Until I met her two years ago, I was alone. Too queer for the straight crowd and not gay enough for the queer circles.â
âGuess Iâll have to meet and thank her,â Jett said while his smile slowly returned. âShe sounds phenomenal.â
âShe is,â I agreed then groaned as melted butter pelted the back of my head. âWhat the?â
We turned to see my automated kitchen device stutter for a few seconds before it collapsed. I was about to push it out of the way and cook things myself, but the dials for all the burners were gone. A few seconds of looking showed them crushed in my machineâs gears.
I studied the scene again then kicked my machine and stormed to the couch. âI changed the settings, but I put it in the starting spot for pancakes.â
Jett pursed his lips to stop himself from laughing at the situation then offered to take me to his dorm and make a snack. âWeâre fresh out of garlic, but regular toast is fine. I even have whole grain bread.â
âYouâd do that for me?â I asked while I wiped away a few tears.
âOf course. Iâll let you meet my roommate if sheâs back and awake.â
I nodded, then Jett pulled me from the couch. I gave him my car keys, but he shook his head and pointed to the campus two blocks away. âDonât waste the electricity just for a few blocks.â
We walked to Jettâs dorm where he sat me down on the couch with a blanket and promised to be back with some toast and hot chocolate. A few minutes passed when I heard Jett yell out, âWhereâs the chocolate mix?!â
A Chao girlâs voice replied with, âTop shelf with the tea! I just made tea and havenât cleaned the kettle.â
âI noticed, you lazy bum.â
I couldnât help but smile at their interaction. It reminded me of Astrid and I but in reverse. She couldnât be bothered to do upkeep when sheâs in the moment.
Oh no! Astrid! Sheâll be so pissed if she comes home to the mess I made. I pulled out my phone and sent her a quick message explaining the situation then hoped her night was less chaotic than mine.
I put my phone away in time for Jett to return with steaming hot chocolate and freshly buttered toast. I graciously took the bread and set the cup on the coffee table. Once I had a few bites of the bread, I curled into Jettâs chest, hoping for some comfort after the wreck I caused. He tried to console me, but I wanted to sit in silence and feel safe with him until I had to get Astrid from the club or wherever she ended up.
Jettâs chest was just as hard as it felt, but that was exactly what I needed. I felt, for lack of a better term, grounded, and lost track of time. I could have been there for minutes or hours, but I was at peace the whole time.
When I pulled myself back up, I noticed a familiar pair of pink flats. âMy best friend has a pair of shoes just like that.â
âIâd hope so, Ramzy. I brought them here,â Astrid said from behind the couch.
I faced her and the Chao girl, both barely dressed as they checked me over. âWhat are you doing here?â
âHooked up with a cute girl who happens to live here. You?â
âToast with the guy who lives here.â
