Howdy, friends. As you have likely already heard, four episodes from Book 3 were leaked this past weekend. It is bad enough that it happened at all, but it would have been a little less of a disaster had it at least been the first four episodes of the season. Instead, the third through the sixth episodes popped out online, causing confusion and, at least on our end of things, frustration. As you all know, these episodes take a ton of concerted effort from scores of individuals. We craft these continuous storylines and the animation as best we can, and hope that they are presented in a way that allows everyone to enjoy them to the fullest. But when leaks happen, the work we meticulously prepared for the audience is fumbled unceremoniously.
Nickelodeon is obviously a massive corporation with outlets all over the world. These outlets get the episodes in advance so they can translate and dub them for their markets. We typically deliver the episodes to the network quite close to their U.S. premieres, but in the case of Book 3, we have actually already finished the entire season as of last week. The network has some plans in the works for it and needs to wait on its release, so we have been keeping quiet while keeping our noses to the Book 4 grindstone. Unfortunately, the longer the episodes sit on all these shelves all over the world, the probability of leaks increases.
So, yeah… It is unfortunate it played out this way. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before Book 3 is released properly and with respect to all the people who worked hard to make it and to the audience who wants to watch it.
Why It's Stupid To Care About Lin's Dad/***Why The Beifongs Are Still My Favorite Characters

Spoilers below the cut from Book 3 Episodes 5 and 6
The Beifongs are a really complicated family. And when I say complicated, I mean not really because it’s pretty common to see in families. Does it belong in a kid’s television show? Maybe not. Can Korra even be called a kid’s television show? EH. But whoever says that the Beifongs’ attitudes and behaviors are contrived and shoehorned in, you obviously have not lived in a bad home life.
Everyone should know by now, Toph grew up in a very oppressive environment, mostly due to her blindness, to a point where she couldn’t leave her property. This authoritarian-like parenting made Toph turn to rebellion, and because of this, Toph never had a set idea of how to actually parent well. This led to her having a permissive, almost neglectful, type of parenting towards Lin and Su Jin. We have no idea who their fathers are, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter. We’re talking about the Beifongs here. It’s likely that after building Republic City from scratch and establishing the police force (not to mention the Yakone incident), Toph was under some heavy stress. As the police chief of a newly formed city her and her friends made, she had a lot on her plate. Maybe she wanted to have kids because she decided it was time since Katara already had 3 of her own. So she had Lin at 22. Skip several years and then we get Su Jin from another mystery dad. Since Toph had no idea how to parent, she did the best she could with the weight of the city on her back: she had them do anything they please. A no-limit restriction, the complete opposite of what her parents did. Maybe that way, they’d grow up to be fine.
Lin and Su Jin represent two ways that a person can go down if brought up by an overly permissive parent (who’s chief of police). The first one is Su Jin. Because of the lack of attention Toph has given her as she was growing up, she’s meant to believe that she can do anything and get away with it. It’s because of that that leads her to hang out with the Triads and commit felonies. Su Jin has lack of self regulation and discipline because Toph didn’t want to discipline her. She didn’t want to be like her parents where she had to tell her daughter what to do, so she let her do whatever she wanted. There were little to no repercussions against Su Jin either as she couldn’t be arrested, as seen in episode 6. She was a reckless, cocky teen who, because of her mother’s position, thought she could do whatever she wanted until she got kicked out of Republic City by her mother herself. In the flashback we see Toph say that Su Jin was going to move with her grandparents. We know that didn’t happen (in the long run anyway) because of what Su Jin told Korra the episode before. She spent her time with pirates and sandbenders, trying to find herself. This actually worked for the best of her because she’s possibly part of one of the most stable families in the show. Toph actually helped her by making her get out. Su Jin could get all the freedom she wanted, but by doing that, there was more time to think and more time to discover herself. Like Lin said, if she did stay in Republic City, she might still have been arrested.
Lin though. She must’ve seen the stress and troubles her mother was going through. There was no one to take care of her and a whole city on her mother’s shoulders. Not to mention a younger sister coming. She must’ve had to grow up pretty fast. She’d have to take care of her sister while her mother was gone and work hard to at least take some of the weight off her mother’s shoulders. As she grew up, she still had to deal with her bratty sister. When she had arrest her sister and see her mom fall under the guilt of covering up for Su Jin (presumably), she had to take the place of Chief of Police real fast. She had to focus on her work as chief to please her mother and to uphold the Beifong name. Even if she were to want to pursue a relationship, it ultimately wouldn’t work because she was too busy with her duties. From her reactions, she really did want to have a relationship with Tenzin, but because of conflicting desires, it fell apart. In contrast to Su Jin, Lin was trapped in Republic City. Where Su Jin had all the time to think in the world, Lin had none. She was too preoccupied with everything going on in her city. She doesn’t WANT to be bitter and alone, but for what she was dealt with and how she dealt WITH it, that was how it all turned out.
All in all, the Beifong sisters basically are kids who wanted to have their mother’s attention, whether it was related to work or not. The Beifong mother couldn’t give it because she didn’t know how to deal with parenting, not to mention all the duress she was under. If you’re still mulling over the fact that we still don’t know who Lin’s dad is, get over yourself. It’s not about him, it’s about the Beifong females. It’s about the different ways different people react to certain situations. Lin hasn’t changed because she hadn’t had time to change, while Su Jin has had the world’s amount of time to reflect on what she’s done in the past and change herself. She trusts other people to do the same as well as she’s taken in former fugitives and given them a better life. Honestly, that’s the character arc in the Metal City: people make mistakes in their lives and it’s never too late for them to change. While Lin has never changed in the past 30+ years, her sister is still willing to give her a chance.
Again, should this be in the Legend of Korra? EH. While this familial relationship makes more sense than a lot of the rest, it still kind of feels out of place as something stemming from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Maybe that’s the most beef people has got with it.

if lin doesn't even know who her father was, why should we? why would it even make a difference? (it wouldn't) no one working on korra owes us anything, especially an estranged parent of a character. it's not like they ~plan to make us suffer~ by not telling us who toph's husband was. the bei fong family was written so that it was clear that they had really big problems and were pretty god damn dysfunctional. an estranged father was the least of their worries
