The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
âIn a way,â huh? Simon supposed he felt the same. It was nice to know Allen didnât hate talking to him or whatever. He nodded again, but didnât make an attempt to start anything up. Fortunately Allen didnât wait for him to, either.
Simon didnât need much time to think. âNo,â he said immediately, though he cleared his throat and tried to explain. âI mean, thereâs no⊠Story, I⊠Uh, Bell um⊠Well, heâs⊠Heâs not my Pokemon. I didnât⊠Didnât capture him, a-and he doesnât have a uh⊠A ball, or anything. I was⊠Um, like⊠Pa-passed out in an alley for a day or something and when I woke up, he was just uh⊠There, sitting on me. He had his bell, too, so uh⊠I mean, he belonged to s-someone else before, I just. Donât know who, or⊠Or why he left. He doesnât talk, either, but⊠He understands and things, I mean⊠I think he could talk if he wanted to. A-anyway, heâs not mine. He just, he just hangs around and I donât⊠I mean, I tolerate him,â Simon explained, reaching a hand up to lightly stroke the Pokemon in his scarf.
Allen nodded as Simon explained to him about Silverbell, his mind focusing less on what had transpired ealier and more on this pokmeon. Why did it exactly want to be around Simon in the first place? Well, then again the âmon maybe just likes to stick around Simon, who knows.Â
âI see,â he replied, looking over at Silverbell. âIâve never seen someone who didnât own the pokemon that traveled with them.âÂ
"Right, I dunno... Bell uh...I-I mean he makes his own decisions. I just. Let'im do as he pleases," Simon replied. He hadn't seen anything like this minccino before either, and still had no idea why Bell would hang around. He only assumed it might be because the pokemon liked being around him, or otherwise had nowhere else to go. "What uhm... What pokemon do you have? Aside from a... Dragonite, was it?"
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Simon visibly flinched at Allenâs response, leaning away from him somewhat and looking at him with a confused expression. He stayed like that for a second before looking back to his hands, but only for a second before glancing again to Allen.
âOkayâŠâ Simon said quietly after a moment. âI wonât press⊠but, I wouldnât⊠judge you, either,â he added. He wasnât sure what he could have said. Allen was obviously lying, but Simon wasnât going to directly accuse him of that. Besides it didnât seem much like lying, simply trying to hide⊠something. Simon didnât know what, and he thought he would be fine with not-knowing. He sighed quietly, his second attempt in a row at something casual having failed. âWe donât⊠uh, we donât⊠h-have to talk anymore if youâd prefer that,â he offered softly.
Hearing Simon say that he wonât press on the subject made Allen relax, the corners of his mouth turning up into a slight smile. He was..glad the other didnât want to continue that line of conversation. He didnât know if he could do so without telling the red-head about certain things that he would rather keep to himself.Â
Seeing the other sigh and suggest not talking, Allen shook his head. âNo, no itâs okay. I enjoy talking to you..in a way.â he started, bringing his hand from his bangs to the back of his neck. Simon was very nice, and quite easy to talk to..that is if you can get past his stutters and round about ways of saying things at times.Â
âSo um, how did you meet Siverbell? Any interesting story related to that?â
'In a way,' huh? Simon supposed he felt the same. It was nice to know Allen didn't hate talking to him or whatever. He nodded again, but didn't make an attempt to start anything up. Fortunately Allen didn't wait for him to, either.
Simon didn't need much time to think. "No," he said immediately, though he cleared his throat and tried to explain. "I mean, there's no... Story, I... Uh, Bell um... Well, he's... He's not my Pokemon. I didn't... Didn't capture him, a-and he doesn't have a uh... A ball, or anything. I was... Um, like... He just, he just hangs around and I don't... I mean, I tolerate him," Simon explained, reaching a hand up to lightly stroke the Pokemon in his scarf.
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
âSure,â Simon responded, retracting his arm and starting to play with his fingernails again. âSo⊠Shall we?â he continued after a second of silence, and then started walking again, this time a little quicker but he hoped not in a way that would make Allen want to stray behind.
âS-so uh⊠If I could ask⊠I mean, I-if itâs okay,â Simon started up a related strain of conversation. âWhat uh⊠What would actually ah⊠Happen? if you miss⊠If you miss training?â he asked, hoping he wasnât bringing something up he really shouldnât be.
Allen looked back at Simon and nodded when he asked if they should continue on, walking along side him. He had noted the quickened pace, a slight frown on his face. He made the other man uncomfortable againâŠit was his fault for assuming..for jumping to conclusions.Â
However as soon as Simon asked about his earlier thought, Allen instantly tensed up, trying to think of something.
âI..uh..NOTHING, nothing I just donât like to miss training.â  he sputtered out, stumbling again, this time for a completely different reason. Fear and tension crawled into his tone, his hand covering his bangs once more. Simon shouldnât know about that..noâŠfather wouldnât want him to know.Â
He should have never said anything.
Simon visibly flinched at Allen's response, leaning away from him somewhat and looking at him with a confused expression. He stayed like that for a second before looking back to his hands, but only for a second before glancing again to Allen.
"Okay..." Simon said quietly after a moment. "I won't press... but, I wouldn't... judge you, either," he added. He wasn't sure what he could have said. Allen was obviously lying, but Simon wasn't going to directly accuse him of that. Besides it didn't seem much like lying, simply trying to hide... something. Simon didn't know what, and he thought he would be fine with not-knowing. He sighed quietly, his second attempt in a row at something casual having failed. "We don't... uh, we don't... h-have to talk anymore if you'd prefer that," he offered softly.
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Simon cleared his throat and just nodded silently when the other apologized. He looked down to his fingers and sighed again, calming down somewhat and kind of trying to stop fidgeting. Of course, it didnât work. He just listened to what the other said and again wanted to reassure him that he was not sick, but the way his thought faded out made Simon look over.
It didnât sound good. It sounded like he was imagining a threat. Simon felt his stomach sink a bit but he pushed the thought away. It wasnât his place to ask.
Instead, the man shook his head and placed a hand on Allenâs shoulder. âUh⊠p-please believe me, I⊠I think by tomorrow morning youâll⊠be perfectly alright again, yeah. A-and if youâre not, maybe get a second opinion⊠I think youâre fine,â he said, trying his best to sound reassuring.
Allen had looked down at the ground after he trailed off, frowning. His face had cooled off, his cheeks still slightly pink still. Why did he say that aloud? Simon wouldnât exactly care about thatâŠafter all..they were still strangers, however friendly they are with each other.Â
The manâs hand on his shoulder made him look over at Simon, the otherâs attempt at reassuring him made him smile just a bit. Nodding he glanced away before muttering, âThank youâŠâ
He hoped that the red-head would still want to take him the rest of the way to the castle.
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Simon froze when the other reacted to what he said. His fingers curled into his palms and then met each other for some quick fidgeting. He didnât know what to do! He should run. Just. Turn and run off. They were close enough to the castle that Allen could get there on his own, he was sure. Butâ no, how could he even consider that? He took a deep breath and then shook his head vigorously.
âN-no, no, I didnâtâ I mean, it was a joke, because, youâ you know, if youâre c-coming down with something, so-some⊠some i-illness or some⊠something, then I wouldnât want to kâ Iâ er, catch it, I mean⊠a joke! Thatâs all, I wouldnât kâ I mean, I wouldnâtâ not unless you wâ not, I⊠it was a joke,â he stuttered, obviously having a harder time communicating than usual. He added some forced laughter on the tail end, but every other part of him very much wanted to give up and turn around and leave. He sighed after all that, trying to regain his composure and straighten up. âI d⊠I donât think I know why your face is red I⊠I mean, IâŠâ he had to pause again before trying to continue. âI mean⊠I donât th-think youâre coming d-down with⊠any⊠anything.â
Allen noticed the man starting to fidget again, focusing less on his well being and more on how comfortable the other man was at the moment. He made a mistake, asked a question he shouldnât of asked. He wanted to fix the mistake.Â
He was going to tell him that it was okay, but nothing would come out, instead, he just watched Simon as he tried to point out how it was a joke. Poor man, he was trying to fix the problem too. Hearing Simonâs laugh, Allen decided to laugh.Â
âIâŠIâm sorry I took..that too seriously. I uhâŠI was confused and just..hahah donât worry about it.â he replied to the other, ruffling his hair again. The reassurance that he wasnât coming down with anything was a bit hard for Allen to believe, butâŠfor now heâll believe that he is perfectly fine.
âI hope Iâm not coming down with anythingâŠbeing sick means I have to miss my training. And if I miss training..â he continued, trailing off at the end, not wanting to finish the thought. No, he wanted to keep that to himself. No one was to know of the punishments. Only him and dadâŠhim and dad.
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
âMaybe,â Simon said, amusement still apparent in his voice. Allen was being⊠Well, extremely cute. But Simon didnât know if the other was actually unaware of what his reactions implies or not. It was rather endearing, it he truly wasnât. Simon would leave it alone for now though, honestly, what could he even do? Say something totally awkward, thatâs what. He hesitated only for a second, but then he wasnât really thinking about what he was going to say beforehand.
âI-Iâll make sure not to kiss you, then,â Simon said. He regretted it immediately. What kind of comment was that? His ears burned hot and he looked straight ahead, hoping the other wouldnât respond too negatively, as it was supposed to be a joke.
âMaybe? What do you mean by maybe? Do you know why my face is all red?âÂ
Allen blinked as he looked at Simon, hand still trying to cover his bangs. He looked down, walking slower, trying to think what type of sickness he caught. He only hoped it wasnât fatal.Â
However, Simonâs remark made his good eye open up a bit more, his face which was starting to return to its normal color flushing a bright red once again.Â
â..Kiss me?!â he asked, looking back at Simon. You could see that he was completely confused, unable to understand what the other meant. Kiss him? Why would Simon kiss him?
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
The answer he received was a lovely one. Had Simon actually made a friend? Well, sort of. They didnât live near each other so he didnât have any expectations of seeing the other often or anything, but⊠it was probably best that way. If you donât expect to see someone you canât be disappointed when they donât show up. Yes, this could work out quite nicely, he thought.
As a rather unnecessary⊠response, Simon reached a bandaged hand toward the otherâs face when he turned away and pulled some of his hair to the side. He squinted as he did so, and for the second time that night he pulled his hand away from the otherâs hair- though this time he lingered a bit longer before doing it.
âYour face is red,â Simon uttered, odd-eyes still somewhat squinted but the corners of his lips faintly curled upward. He wanted to think that he didnât know why, but he thought that maybe he did. He wouldnât acknowledge it, though. âAre you⊠ah, are you feeling alright?â he asked, turning more forward again as they walked.
Allen did not exact Simonâs bandaged hand to pull his hair to the side once more, he didnât expect that the manâs fingers would accidentally brush against part of Allenâs scar. It was a light brush, but he felt his cheeks redden even more. What the hell was wrong with him? He must be coming down with a cold, he usually didnât feel this warm.Â
âI-It is?â he asked, stumbling over his words a bit. No one had ever exactly stared at his scarred faced like that. But then again, not many people could even stand seeing the damn thing in the first place. Noticing the other pulling his hand away from his face, Allen then placed a hand over his bangs where his eye was and found his face flushing even more.Â
âI-I donât know good friend..â he mumbled, âI think I may be coming down with something.
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Simon couldnât help but smile at the response he got. He could tell that Allen was reliving some flying experiences or something, and suddenly Simon desperately wished he knew what it was like. Looking down at the other, Simon sighed and nodded his⊠somewhat understanding. It sure sounded wonderful.
In the dark, Simon wasnât able to catch the otherâs blush. He did, however, interpret the offer a little backwards. His smile broadened just barely, and he stopped fidgeting to reach a hand up and scratch at the patch of stubble on his chin. âSo⊠that⊠that means you plan to come? Erâ I-I mean. Come sâŠsee me?â he asked, hopefulness fairly obvious in his voice. Sure, theyâd talked about âifâ Allen was back in that area or whatever, but⊠This was a little beyond what Simon would have expected. He realized then that he hadnât even responded the actual offer, so his next statement was blurted out rather ungracefully. âI-Iâd, Iâd⊠Iâd really like that though, flying I mean⊠that uh⊠that would be incâŠincredible.â
Watching the other man, he noticed that when he asked if he would go flying with him one day, the other smiled. Allen couldnât help but feel incredibly giddy about it, remembering the first time he took Raphael out to fly at night. For some reason, flying with another person there is much better than being alone with your dragon, and Allen was excited to show Simon the wonders of the sky above.Â
âOf course!â he exclaimed, a chuckle coming out his his lips, âI didnât have a reason to come around this area..but now, I see no reason why I shouldnât come and see you again.â He rubbed the back of his neck, hoping that by turning his head slightly Simon wouldnât notice how much he was blushing from..what Allen would think of as embarrassment. âBesides, how could I fly with you if I never came to see you again?â
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
âAh,â Simon responded with a slight nod. Flying around on a dragonite, huh? It sounded fun. Simon had never been off the ground before but he didnât think heâd mind it, so long as the Pokemon seemed sturdy.
His fingers were together again, but he wasnât really picking at his nails. He was mostly just massaging the digits on either hand, changing every few seconds. It was amazing how being somewhat comfortable around a person could make his anxiety drop. At least for now, while they walked together, Simon felt sort of⊠Safe. Unthreatened, at least. He didnât yet want the conversation to drop away, so he kept going on the same subject.
âWhatâs it⊠ah, whatâs it like to fly?â he asked, the first thing that came to mind when the other spoke of the action.
Allen nodded, looking up at the sky for a moment and breathing in deeply. He wasnât exactly happy that Raphael had landed off course at first, but nowâŠhe will have to thank the dragon. Because that dragon made a mistake, he and Simon met. He made what Allen would call, a friend.
He glanced down at Simonâs fingers, the first time he actually noticed the manâs figiting. He knew that Simon was the shy and awkward type, but he didnât realize how anxious the man had been until now. He felt somewhat guilty about it, but decided to shake it off and look back at the red-headâs eyes once more, staring into the other manâs mismatching eyes.
Suddenly, Simonâs question sliced through the silence between the two, making Allen blink once or twice before closing his eyes and making a âhrmmâ sound. Memories and sensations flooded his mind, reminding him. The feeling of the wind tangling itself in his hair, embracing him. The thrill of being hundreds of feet off the ground, a slight mistake could make him fall to his death. A mighty dragon underneath him, breathing, flapping its wings and enjoying the feel of the flight just as much as he was.Â
He would love to show the other man those feelings.Â
âItâsâŠwonderful,â he started, looking back at the other man with a huge smile on his face, eyes lighting up. âBreathtaking almost..and very..beautiful, especially at night.âÂ
He felt his cheeks redden, not exactly sure if he should ask or..oh why not, it is up to Simon if he wanted to take the opportunity.
âMaybe the next time I come see youâŠI can take you flying? Raphael doesnât mind meeting new people..and he enjoys being up in the air as much as I do.â
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Gaze skating over Allenâs odd eye when his hair was moved out of the way, Simonâs expression softened somewhat. He noticed Allen smiling and couldnât help but respond with a sort of amused, âWhat?â He wasnât sure what the other was thinking about, but it made Simon want to smile, too.
As he started walking again, he kept a significantly slower pace. Instead of awkwardly leading the other down the streets, he was awkwardly strolling next to him instead. Yes, he had indeed enjoyed Allenâs company. He didnât quite want their night to end just yetâ Simon wouldnât be sleeping, anyway. He wasnât sure what heâd go back to doing after dropping Simon off. Fortunately Silverbell had fallen asleep in his scarf after the meal, and that probably meant he wouldnât be knocking Simon out that night. A thought occurred. Simon glanced over to Allen as they walked before asking, âWhat uh⊠What brought you to ah, my part of the city, an-anyway?â Simon wanted to know if whatever it was would have a chance of happening again.
âNothing, nothing, I was just..thinking something interesting,â he muttered, his bangs setting back into place.Â
As they started walked, he noticed how slow they were going, but rather than point it out, he just kept side by side with the other man. It was nice to enjoy the scenery, something he hadnât done the first time he strolled through this area. He should do it more often.Â
Simonâs question interrupting Allenâs thoughts, he turned over to the other with a âwha?â before he said âohâ and laughed.Â
âRaphael, my dragonite..he and I like to go out flying. Today he landed a bitâŠtoo far off course by accident. It was dark outside so I can understand why he would land where he did.âÂ
The Knight and the Civilian: Two Strangers Meeting
Simon nodded silently and watched the other count the money they needed. He looked almost curiously at the coin pouch. He had one, as well, though somewhat nappier and, of course, empty. The man simply watched the exchange again, noticing how Allen made eye contact this time. Simon pursed his lips, exhaled through his nose and then stood up from his seat.
âYeah I⊠yeah, I think so,â he said in response to Allenâs question. âWeâre getting close to the castle, so⊠shouldnât⊠be too much longer âtill youâre where you nâŠneed to be,â he muttered. He started towards the door they had arrived through, and this time held the door open for the other.
Noticing the other exhale through his nose in a rathe loud manner, Allenâs brow furrowed slightly. Did he do something wrong? He shrugged it off, standing up as soon as he noticed Simon already up. Following behind Simon, he muttered a thanks at the red-head as he saw the other open the door for him, passing through before he turned around and waited for the other to take the lead once more.Â
âAlright, thatâs great to know,â he replied, feeling almost sad that his time with the other man was almost over. But they were only strangers, and Allen only met the other because he wanted directions, why is he this sad to see them getting closer to parting ways? Maybe he should try and talk to him another time, and maybe take him out for a ride on Raphael. He didnât know how willing the other would be, but he was sure that Simon might at least somewhat enjoy it..that is, if he isnât afraid of heights.
Running his fingers through his hair, his bangs were pulled back for a second, his full eye exposed as he smiled at Simon.Â
