I am not talking about that old I am talking about Many Hands old. Yeah that's the quality of art we got back then, Also from an artist to another, what Yuji draws takes a lot of time and effort, if you dont believe me please try to make a copy of the adventure style and try to make a ''lazy'' cover like that before you accuse it of lazy, Because it takes time and effort , back then there were more details in the covers yes but also more errors and mistakes

Many Hands was possibly many people and worked on about two things? Also the covers on those issues weren’t made by them and look great.

Sure, any art takes time and effort. Even the worst of it. And I in fact really like that style. But is it suitable for a comic cover? Do I think it was as time consuming as most other comic covers? No and no.

And don’t act like there aren’t excellent covers being made these days with plenty of detail. Published by IDW even.

So you’re saying Julie Su’s design was so effective that a bunch of people did knock offs? Or you have proof these all came from before that somehow? Also, boiling her down to just color is idiotic. She had metal parts and a distinct outfit for starters.

This Whisper character just looks like something dredged up by any angsty teen who watches anime.

As for the PARODY character I linked that makes fun of that ARCHETYPE I would say the look is spot on. Obviously I don’t know every detail of the character, nor do I care. The point was that on casual observation she looks like an 8th grader dreamed her up for bad fanfiction.

Wait..didnt the archie Sonic comic books lie most of the time anyway? they sometimes featured a deadSonic on the cover only to reveal the story had nothing to do with it at all, not to mention googling the real old covers thats the kind of quality I see on Deviantart bu young Sonic furry artist not professional comic book artist

Incorrect, they didn’t ‘lie’ exactly. They created drama. Usually within that story Sonic would get injured or something. Sometimes it would just be showing off how cool some new character was meant to be or the return of an old enemy.

It’s a bit of a cheap tactic, but a very common one with comics, to have fake deaths and “GASP IS THING THING?” sorts of things and the answer usually be “no”. That said, I recall Sonic actually being more “Yeah, thing really was thing” about it than most. Characters turning traitor and the like.

Also... no shit. You’re looking at the OLDEST Sonic comic covers and telling me they weren’t top notch!? Back in the day they couldn’t even keep Sally’s colors straight. But they were also made in the early 90s when Sonic first started existing and likely by the lowest tiers of Archie Comics staff. People who I’m sure were used to high octane action... and not bikinis and hamburgers.

I never said the old ones were perfect, not by a long shot, but ancient history is ancient history. Those were the building blocks of what exists today. Now? There’s a solid market for comics of this sort and plenty of artists versed in it.

You kinda lost the argument when you are trying to argue that a pink girl version of Knuckles is a good Sonic design but Whisper is not because you dont like grey lol not to mention I have been on Sonic oc groups since 2004 the majority of bad Sonic oc's were Green and Red versions of Soncis and Knuckles having boobs not once have I seen a character that looks like Whisper at all

Wearing nothing but black and grey is one symptom of the whole for starters. It’s also not limited purely to Sonic, it’s a general bad OC thing. Associated with guns, over the top angst done very poorly... you know, edgy teenager shit.

As a former student from art school, chaotic and cluttered desings are not encouraged its to busy and doesnt catch the attention of the majority of people, at least the IDW cover looks good and knows where to draw the viewers attention too

Where to draw the attenti- IT’S A COMIC BOOK COVER. There’s nowhere to draw the attention to but itself! It’s not saying hey look at that BBQ restaurant right over there, nor is this particular cover trying to show you any important details about fisty the leemur or Sonic or anyone else. They’re not showing particular emotions or hiding something from other characters. They’re just there. It’s not revealing a spy or a death egg or hinting at a big coming battle. It in fact TELLS YOU NOTHING OF THE STORY. THAT’S NOT GREAT. The best covers will give you a hint of what’s inside, even if that hint was a red herring.

As someone who also took at least one art class in their life I’m not really impressed with what you’ve said.

Whisper looks really well desinged trough ? I mean its thousand times better then the old archie ones which had like thousand of Knuckles clones its kind of ironic you call that a bad design but are a fan of MLP characters that can easily be switched out from one another

God even that name rings of bad Sonic OC. And no, that design is pretty average to me, but everything that comes WITH it is bad OC town.

Wears all black and grey? check. Unnecessary mask placed strangely on their head? Far as I can tell check. Gun? Looks like a check to me. What are they, like, a wolf? Combine it with everything else and that feels bleh as well.

And the only thing I’ve seen posted of the character made them seem like a tragic backstory mute.

That aside, here’s the thing about the echidnas. They were all echidnas. Just like all ponies are, shockingly, ponies. Humans? Man, they mostly hover around the same height, only come in a few colors, et cetera.

In other words, yeah, a race tends to have a lot of traits in common. GO FIGURE. Still never lost Julie Su in a crowd. Now, you could certainly go too far in detailing stylized figures and hit uncanny valley areas. Thaaaaat is something some of the Knuckles comcis were guilty of if I recall.

Using color, accessories, hair styles, and small physical differences along with personality to differentiate between similar models isn’t a ‘bad design’, it’s usually about practicality. That’s often how we know our protagonists, isn’t it?

Yes, for dynamic cartooning you want really unique silhouettes. But that doesn’t really apply to racial templates on the whole I don’t think.

Idk I would not call that cover lazy maybe a bit meh but not lazy the old archie covers were good but they were often ugly too or too chaotic and cluttered even when Spaz tried to copy Yuji's art style his covers ended up looking too busy

Oh there were definitely some ugly ones. They had ugly phases I would say. Then again they were also building from scratch, sort of.

Clutter though I’ll defend, those I always found interesting. Particularly if someone never had cracked those open it would make them go ‘Wow there’s a lot going on. This is a world.’ and it also usually made things feel more action packed or dramatic depending on the scenarios.

Dude that Sonic IDW Cover looks like fanwork to you? how? the dude behind the Sonic Adventure style made it and trust me that takes a lot of work

... so you don’t see why something that looks exactly like an older, well liked, style, generally not used for elaborate art pieces like professional comic covers which usually have their own unique flavor to them, would make me think of a fan work?

Of course the weirdo sniper which screams bad fan character on sight probably didn’t help.

Penders if you read this, please stop. Let it go. We get it,but please move on from the Sonic comics, you keep saying your done with Sonic and want to do your own thing but everytime something new Sonic related comes out you have to attack the people in charge. But that comic cover IS pretty lazy by the standards set by the original Sonic Archie series. Or even other IDW titles like the MLP books. It looks like a fairly casual fan work. Or maybe a desktop background.

Eh, it’s not like ALL the old comic covers were gold though.
