The reason is because the appeal of conspiracy theories is that the believer holds the key to saving the world: that if they convince people of the truth then everyone's eyes will be opened and the problem will go away. By telling them that the evil is all out in the open youre crushing their fun on two levels, by giving evidence that they are wrong and evidence that making the evil public knowledge in no way stops it.
