The Rashomon Effect, Unreliable Narrators, and Ben Solo

There’s something I often see that really bothers me when people try to analyze Ben’s motivations and Tragic Backstory, and that is taking Ben’s perception as literal truth, especially as it comes to his relationship with his family and theirs with him.

There’s this thing called the Rashomon Effect. It’s named after a film by Akira Kurosawa, whose films incidentally were one of Lucas’ inspirations for Star Wars. Anyway. The Rashomon Effect is a storytelling technique in which an event is recounted in different, contradictory ways by the different people involved. We’ve seen this explicitly homaged in TLJ here:

The point is this: a person’s emotions, based on their interpretation of events, may be valid. But this doesn’t mean that their interpretation of events is factually correct, or that their assumption of others’ motivations is accurate. We might not even know whose interpretation is ultimately correct. Just like real life! Cool!

The great complexity of Ben Solo’s character (or one of them), is the fact that he is an earnestly unreliable narrator. Ben believes in his own interpretation of events. He believes (or has forced himself to believe) the things he’s saying. He does believe that his parents abandoned him when he needed them. He does believe that he is now someone other than Ben Solo. He does (or did) believe that his uncle simply wanted to murder him in the dead of night without a second thought. 

Ben does believe that, and his feelings that stem from these beliefs make justified sense. From his perspective.

Because the other half of the story is that Ben was a highly vulnerable, highly emotional child preyed upon by a child predator who, according to the TLJ novelization, deliberately set him up against the rest of his family so that he would in the future destroy them for Snoke’s own ends. The other half of the story is that Ben was merely a child when these things started happening to him— a child who would hardly be able to understand the difference between a parent’s ‘fear of’ and ‘fear for.’ The other half of the story is that Han and Leia loved their child— but that they were not there enough for him, because they didn’t know what to do for him; that Han and Leia sent Ben to Luke to try to save him, but that this choice, while motivated by love, was ultimately the wrong one; that Luke did shirk back from his lit lightsaber, but a moment too late.

The other side of the story is a mother who wants nothing more than for her son to come home, of a father who died to save that son, and an uncle who used his final moments to apologize and prevent his nephew from letting another murder stain his soul.

The great complexity and tragedy of Ben’s story is not that his family didn’t love him, or that he didn’t love them, but that they did, and he did, and that this did not stop them from hurting each other or loving each other or doing both at the same time. Part of growing up is being able to understand and to reconcile with this complexity; with allowing yourself to forgive yourself and your family for being human. What Ben needs on his journey to self-actualized adulthood is to realize these things; to synthesize his memories of the past with a more nuanced understanding of how to come to terms with his parents as people, and with himself as both victim and victimizer, both to those who wanted to hurt him and those who wanted to love him. 

In my opinion, it only cheapens the story to try to reduce it to lesser terms.

Children throw temper tantrums because they are young and due to their youth they haven’t learned how to properly express their emotions. They usually grow out of them as they mature and their capacity for processing their emotions increases. Children who are spoiled may throw tantrums in order to get their way, but spoiled adults exhibit their spoiled attitudes differently.

If an adult exhibits a pattern of tantrum-like behavior then it’s no longer due to being spoiled and it’s a medical issue usually of a psychiatric nature. Some examples are autism, intermittent explosive disorder, and intellectual disabilities. Please don’t infantilize people who struggle with explosive episodes by calling them literal children. The only literal children are people who are child aged.

If you read the article the creators of Wreck-it Ralph say they wanted to be true to the character and Lucasfilm informed them that Kylo being a spoiled child isn’t true to his character. I think it’s interesting that the TLJ novelization has Leia remember that he struggled with explosive issues as a child and now we know that the source of his issues was not due to being spoiled. I’m sorry if this came across as confrontational, but it’s something I feel really passionate about due to my own conditions.

I’m actually really happy that Lucasfilm isn’t perpetuating the attitude that adults with these issues are just spoiled because it really hurts those of us who are trying to manage their condition.

@aro-ace-from-outer-space22 You’re URL is awesome btw. Surprisingly enough, Kylo is actually 29 years old rather than 18. People with extreme anger issues count as a mental illness. Intermittent Explosive Disorder is this for example. According to the directors Kylo is also struggling to grow up which mentally well people don’t usually struggle with. So him coming across as young despite being well into adulthood is intentional. This is usually a sign of trauma. In the TLJ novelization Luke senses that Kylo’s rampage on Crait is more about pain and fear than anger. Luke also in the confrontation on Crait “sensed that Kylo Ren was just a shell around the same broken boy he had tried so hard to reach.” (p 297) Also this is his reaction to seeing Luke.

He has to sit down to collect himself.

“He had seen his apprentice’s enormous potential when he was still a child–the latent power of the Skywalker bloodline was impossible to miss. And he had also seen how to exploit the boy’s feelings of inadequacy and abandonment, and his mother’s guilt and desperation to contain the darkness within her child.” (P 222) This passage is about Snoke manipulating Kylo since he was a child for his own uses which is child grooming and a form of child abuse. Abused children often develop anger issues and other forms of mental illness.

“It’s more than just having a ‘bad seed’ as a kid. Snoke had targeted this kid and knew that this kid was going to be incredibly powerful in the Force and wanted him as an ally.” - JJ Abrams, director of the The Force Awakens

There’s also evidence to suggest that Snoke has been manipulating Kylo since he was in the womb. These next passages are pretty long so I’m going to use the screenshots that @corseque helpfully provided us with.

Also this: “Kylo stood stone-faced as Snoke approached him, willing himself to remain still as one finger stretched for his cheek, then higher. The fingertip traced Kylo’s eyelid, leaving a streak of moisture behind.” I just…ew. Not gonna lie as a victim of abuse this really creeped me out. Snoke is evidently still abusing him.

They even filmed this scene but understandably decided not to use the footage.

It doesn’t excuse his actions, but it does explain why he has the issues he does and makes him more sympathetic.

I think even if Kylo didn’t have issues, making fun of behavior that is in adults a symptom of mental illness is pretty tasteless. That’s why I can’t stand all those “Crylo” and “Darth Tantrum” jokes.

My personal headcanon is that he has ADHD which means his brain is underdeveloped in the areas of executive function and emotional regulation. Something like three quarters of people in anger management programs have undiagnosed ADHD.

We know he broke things because he couldn’t control his powers as a kid. He was distracted by Rey on Takodana and forgot his mission. Distracted by Rey again and doesn’t even see the gun pointed at him, ignores her name calling to ask about the bond. Distracted by his mother’s force signature so much that he can’t stop the attack on the bridge. Distracted by Luke so bad that he let the Resistance escape. Seriously, the boy’s all over the place…

Calligraphy was probably a huge coping skill. Keeping the hands busy, feeling the glide of pen on paper, immediate feedback of this is beautiful/chicken scratch.

It’s reflected in the sputtering and crackling of his saber. A better name for ADHD, imo, would be Attention Regulation Disorder. There’s so much energy in his saber that it spills over and probably burns him from time to time. He can’t properly regulate the output. The casing is a hot mess of soldered wires and metal.

Or if you look at the Falcon as a symbol of Ben’s heart and mind… The Falcon has three droid brains that argue with each other and can’t prioritize tasks. Or rather, it can’t prioritize tasks in a manner that makes sense to anyone else. Even C3PO and R2D2 scratch their heads when dealing with her.

Mental and emotional maturity takes longer for an ADHD brain. A 30 year old with ADHD may only have the brain of a 21 year old. Comorbid with ADHD is Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Basically, your default setting is “everyone hates you”. You’re never convinced anyone likes you, let alone loves you. They only hate you a little less than other people.
