so does anyone else still have that thing that picks them up, puts them down, picks them up, puts them down, picks them up, puts them down, a hundred times a day?? yk like it picks you up, puts you down, chews you up, spits you out, picks you up, puts you down??? or did everyone else figure that out sometime in the last four years 😬😬
oh god i forgot... im a man of my word and i love u. disclaimer that im insane and my opinions are fringe.
tldr:
in summary, i would posit that the entirety of the oh hellos discography discusses a complex relationship to evangelical christianity, especially christian nationalism. i think most can agree that the four winds eps very clearly paint this type of church as spiritually and morally barren. the oh hellos in that ep cycle are working to salvage a relationship with someone(s) still within that church.
this theme is much more subtle in previous bodies of work (maggie herself said she often obfuscates meaning on purpose), but i would argue that core conflict has been the central theme across their entire discography.
tw: this will unavoidably discuss christian theology
essay below cut:
across dear wormwood, the lover or 'dove' being left is a church quickly falling to this seductive, nationalist view of christ. the lover is often related to fire, like the 'fire and brimstone' from trees. notably, in bitter water the speaker talks about 'the cup that can't be filled' which is a common metaphor in evangelical churches to teach that something will always be missing from a person without christian faith.
there beneath is the only other song from the album with the "oh lei, oh lai" piece soldier poet king is famous for. the second verse goes:
there beyond the palisade (defensive wall)
i saw the morning lead a cavalcade (military procession for a king/president)
they made a marvel of the display and it made me cry, oh lai
in there beneath, a king is marching with his military. like caesar. like a tyrant. the marvel of the display upsets the speaker.
caesar reinforces this idea of a militaristic tyrant king.
exeunt and this will end both depict a lover who is firey and devouring, and the speaker talks of learning to love without demand (foreshadowing the final line of the album). my personal favorite bit of this will end is
I'll give you all I have to spend
and you'll give nothing back to me
which calls back to 'i was tired of giving more than you gave to me' from the truth is a cave on ttddv.
in pale white horse, the speaker tells their lover to flee this fire that devours, a face they'd seen before that was "amid the fire and the ember" "fluttering [their] lashes like ashes and embers". ultimately, in the face of fire and brimstone, the lover is fearful and finds a savior, they lift their voice in song and commit to 'abiding'.
oh lei oh lai!
ultimately, i believe the placement of soldier poet king is incredibly purposeful. this is an album about temptation that names not a single hedonist pleasure. that's not the temptation. instead, the temptation is this - rejoicing in the idea of your god as a great military leader leading your nation to victory.
it's followed by dear wormwood and thus always to tyrants.
in my hour of weakness, you were there to see my courage fail...
but now i understand you, and i will not be part of your designs
nearly every single word of thus always to tyrants is actually a reference to another part of their discography, it could be it's own post, but it concludes as a hand extended to those left in the church
often you will see things online where you just have to be like "what a strange thing to say" or "i don't think that's true :)" to yourself and try to move on or you will lose your mind
IDK I think if cis men are being told that being fat will lower their testosterone and make them Insufficiently Masculine, and cis women are being told that being fat will raise their testosterone and make them Excessively Masculine, and fat trans people are being denied the right to medically transition if they're fat, and thin trans people are warned against HRT because it will make them fat (and this is said about both testosterone and estrogen HRT), and androgynous-presenting people are told that only thin people count as androgynous...
Then maybe...
Maybe...
Maybe the weight loss industry is just using Gender to enforce fatphobia.
i have been noticing recently that people younger than me are too sensitive, while people older than me are not sensitive enough. which, if i'm correct, should be taken as a sign that the total reality penetration vortex is operating as intended -- within as few as five or six generations we may very well be producing babies who can directly perceive the wound at the heart of the world
“If you deny any affinity with another person or kind of person, if you declare it to be wholly different from yourself—as men have done to women, and class has done to class, and nation has done to nation—you may hate it, or deify it, but in either case you have denied its spiritual equality, and its human reality. You have made it into a thing, to which the only possible relationship is a power relationship. And thus you have fatally impoverished your own reality.”
Ursula K. Le Guin "American SF and The Other" in Science-Fiction Studies 7, 1975.
But also it’s kind of rude to assign gender roles and sexual preferences to someone just because they’re masc. just because she wears a snapback that doesn’t mean she’s a top or able to fix your car or whatever.
