Another thing I think is so cool is just thinking about what actually happened to the historical person of Imam al-Mahdi, ajf? Cause, obviously, I don't think like he is literally in hiding. All the historical evidence points to it being a 'noble lie' invented by the four deputies, nevermind the obvious fact that humans don't live for 1,200 years. But when you get past that and accept its 'mystical' truth, which is a difficult concept to elaborate on but perhaps one day I'll elaborate on it, and think about the actual person of Mahdi himself, it gets really interesting. The two boring possibilities considered by historians of Islam are that he was either killed by the Abbasids as a baby or youth, or that he was never actually born because Imam al-Askari's consort couldn't bear children. But the other possibility that, to be quite honest is the least likely, but I still like to think happened, is that he just refused the title of Imam. Who knows what could have motivated such a refusal? Perhaps he didn't want to struggle like his 11 immaculate predecessors, and have to deal with possibly being killed or exiled, and have to captain a whole network of deputies bearing questions of jurisprudence and theology. That in itself is so wonderful to think about, the possibility that the would-be Imam al-Mahdi literally just said "I don't want any of this, I'm going to live like a normal guy". And then the other really interesting question, which is, what did he spend his life doing after refusing that office? Did he become a tailor? Farmer? Hermit? Merchant? How would he have obscured his lineage to people that asked him? Would he check back up sometimes upon the four deputies that decided to keep up the lie? It's one of those things I would love to write a book about or make a movie on. The life of the would-be Messiah who refused the weight of a hereditary title so he could live a normal life
