HISTORY
tw: parental death, foster system, violence, blood, fire
Aster had always been a day late and a dollar short. She was younger and smaller than her twin, the word 'fraternal' slipping off her lips before she learned almost any others, an excuse for why they were different. She didn't mind that they were different, but her twin was a force and Aster was... something else entirely. She was quieter, a little more thoughtful, trying to figure out their lot in life and cool the ever raging fire under her twin’s skin so they could stay in each foster home just a little bit longer. They had a mother as far as they knew, but she had better things to do than try to keep up with her firebrand children, always causing chaos, and Aster still isn’t sure whether their mother left the pair of them or they actually left her. Either way, the foster system was what they knew and it was a tumultuous childhood of bouncing from one place to another, just trying to stay together in a world that seemed desperate to rip the twins apart.
Her entire childhood Aster had been the quiet one, the levelheaded one, the one who was going to answer for her twin and keep them under control and that was all she thought she would ever be. It wasn’t until someone attacked her twin, beat them within an inch of their life for some perceived slight, that Aster discovered that the rage was a part of them both. She had long grown used to getting into fights and scraps in defense of her twin or to end already ongoing issues, but she had never been the one who started anything until that night. Her knuckles were bloody by the time she was dragging her twin outside into the driveway and she doesn’t completely remember the choice, but at some point she struck a match and soon the whole house was ablaze. She had been seventeen then, comforted by the flames and smoke at her back as she scooped up her twin the best she could and walked away from that life, never once looking back.
From then on the pair of them had been on their own, but that wasn’t really new. They moved from place to place, tumbleweeds that couldn’t seem to put down roots, and Aster can’t help but blame her twin for that in some ways. You can only get kicked out of so many places in small towns before you have to move on to the next one and so on and on they went. When they reached Blackrock, Aster secured them jobs like she always had and begged her twin to settle, to make this work. She was twenty years old and tired of running, wanting nothing more in the world than a place to belong. That was all Aster had ever been looking for and while she wasn’t sure if her twin felt the same, she knew that they would concede that to her or else it would ultimately tear them apart for good.
Aster had been waiting patiently for her twin to return from a shift one night only for them to never resurface at the motel they were calling home. She spent hours searching and finally found them at the edge of the woods, bleeding into the snow and splayed out like a rag doll. She dragged them to the only place she could think to help, Hutch’s doorstep, and the pair of them worked tirelessly to save her twin’s life. After suffering through severe bite wounds and a horrible fever, her twin shed their skin and a wolf took their place. Hutch didn’t seem surprised and somehow, neither was Aster. It made sense that there was an animal raging in their twin’s heart in some way that Aster couldn’t explain. After Hutch explained just enough, Aster had already made up her mind. She chased after the wolf that had been her twin, out into the snow, and their scrap ultimately led to the bite she had been looking for. She was not about to let them go anywhere where she couldn’t follow and the winter took her too, explanations sitting heavy on her tongue in spring.
The fight that followed was brutal, but her twin just didn't understand. Wolves had packs and a pack was a family. If they could find a pack they were guaranteed a family that a social worker couldn't rip them out of, a place they might actually belong. The change was never easy, it grated at Aster in a way that caused her angry underbelly to rear its ugly head, but she knew she had to keep going and get better. If she could be good at this, she could make things better for both of them. And then Aster met Will.
Will was everything Aster had ever been hoping to find and more. She was a leader, strong and patient, but she was also kind, warm, someone that Aster could believe in. The pack took them in and Aster had never been more grateful. She worked tirelessly to try to prove herself, to show Will and the pack that she and her twin belonged there, and even with her anger sparking up every now and then she found that was learning and growing. Will had spoken of something called a second, the Alpha's right hand, and Aster wanted it more than anything in the world. If she could be Will's second, could prove that she was good enough, they would have a family for life. Eventually the day came when the announcement was to be made and Aster was practically vibrating with nerves, waiting as patiently as she could to hear her name being called -- except it wasn't.
The rage that filled Aster as Leon was chosen over her was something she had never felt before. She had always had small angry outbursts, sure, but she never felt like blood and fur and teeth more than in that moment, when that utterly useless man had been chosen over her. She had snapped at her twin, snapped at everyone who dared to get close, and had made a break for the woods, wanting to just run and run on four legs until the grief at once again being a failure didn't burn so intensely inside her.
She was being careless, not paying enough attention, and she barely had time to realize that someone else was there before she was already changing and there was no going back. It was Sadie, she recognized that much, but Sadie had seen and that could mean that the life she had worked so hard to build for herself and her twin in Blackrock was finally over. It's been quite some time since then, but it weighs on Aster constantly. Her life has become a balancing act of trying to keep Sadie quiet, trying to hold onto her anger at Leon, and her bitter disappointment at having failed Will. She finds herself getting a little more reckless every day, her mind and body feeling like they are being torn apart, but she thought that maybe, for once, she could belong somewhere. And maybe she was wrong.
CONNECTIONS
“we we born with nothing and we sure as hell have nothing now” [Hemlock] - open to interpretation once the role is taken
“all that we had amassed sits before us shattered into ash” [Will] - a mentor, a friend, a crush that runs deeper than Aster would like to admit. After Leon was chosen for second, their relationship has fractured and Aster doesn’t know if it can be fixed. What’s worse - she doesn’t know if Will has even noticed.
“oh we have paved these streets with moments of defeat” [Leon] - never more than an acquaintance, now he stinks of a rival, almost an enemy. Aster can’t contain the rage she feels about him being chosen over her, wondering what makes him superior and her lesser? She wants to scream those questions in his face, but she knows she wouldn’t get the answers she needs so instead she seethes.
“there’s a hole in my soul, can you fill it? can you fill it?” [Elyas] - beyond a best friend, a true ride or die. Elyas’ scars match Aster’s own, the splinters of their heartbreak fitting them together like shattered glass. Aster doesn’t have to explain herself, doesn’t have to be anything other than who she is at her core, raw and untempered.
“how am I ever gonna get back home?” [Hutch] - her boss, the human that puts up with her attitude and is still willing to patch her up when she needs it. Aster has a huge respect for Hutch and everything he has done for both her and her twin and she knows in some ways she owes him her life.
“icarus is flying to close to the sun and icarus’ life has only just begun” [Sadie] - a mistake, someone who saw something she shouldn’t have. Aster is scared, teeth and claws digging at her seams and telling her she needs to keep this one quiet, to keep things safe. Aster is not willing to give up everything she’s fought for because of one mistake and she’ll do anything she has to do to keep Sadie quiet.
“and felled in the night by the ones you think you love, they will come for you” [OPEN] - potential hunter plot? Aster maybe falling for someone she shouldn’t? totally open to ideas here
“all this bad blood here, won’t you let it dry?” [OPEN] - an old grudge that’s been keeping Aster and this person apart for years that really no longer applies. can they forge ahead and build something new?
