”I know that you don’t want me here,” Suga says with soft sadness in his voice.

He runs his hands over Asahi’s scarred arms, mapping every mark to his memory, mourning every single one.

Asahi stands still and hangs his head, resting his temple on Suga’s brow, breathing slowly in and out. It is dark, the light filtering through the arena dancing with dust – the audience is waiting, merciless and thirsty for blood. It will demand entertainment tainted with gore. From him, from his friends, the audience squeezes every drop of crimson out of them, and applaud and cheer their pain.

”I don’t want any of you to be here,” Asahi says quietly, his eyes cast down. He then looks Suga in the eyes, his sorrow mirrored in this precious face. ”I would carry it all myself, if I could.”

Suga cups his face, caressing his cheek with his thumb. A small smoothing gesture, easing the panic-ridden palpitations of his heart.

”I’m sorry I’m not stronger than this.”

”Oh Asahi,” Suga sighs and presses his eyes close – it’s like a surge, the agonizing hope, something akin to pity but mainly adoration. ”You’re strong enough. You’re our champion. You’re everything.” He brings his other hand to hold Asahi’s face, desperate to make him believe. ”This is enough.”

Suga pulls Asahi closer, and presses his lips softly on Asahi’s forehead. It’s a tender, lingering touch, a good luck charm; a promise. Asahi sighs deeply, closing his eyes, and warmth floods through him, and fills his limbs.

I love you.

This is enough.

Stay alive.

 For a moment he is allowed hope.

It’s not like his opponent, or the audience, stand a chance.
