my boy is the unwilling undead*, and in near-death situations his body unfurls into toothed ribbons. then it folds itself back into shape and heals and he comes to again. except the healing isn't very precise and cares more about getting skin where skin is needed and not so much that it's the same skin that was in that spot before.** so his tattoo, birthmarks, and piercings move around each time — anything surface-level... so to speak.

some of the other things that change from this: his handedness, the direction his hair curls, the order of his teeth, the rate at which he gets heartburn

I was also originally going to include his eyepatch & makeup look, but I thought it took away from the clarity of the gif being about skin-stuff, so I cut it out. here's that, though, minus piercings:

OKAY followup to last post because i think about Oliver so much it eats me up. join me

recent thoughts: he is absolutely a dramatic trauma twunk and i admit this is a soft spot of mine when it comes to characters. but i also like that due to his whole deal he's still basically in the teenager phase of everything bad being the WORST thing that's EVER happened to ANYBODY. like getting hit in the eye from another dimension against all reasonable odds and getting turned into a bomb, that's a pretty good reason to think no one's ever had it as bad as you. and then you leave home, and you have to avoid having friends, and you're depressed so you're drinking a lot, and you're already kind of a partier, and so on and so on

on top of that i love this idea that my DM pitched and we haven't talked about since, which is that he doesn't age quite right. he heals too quickly and doesn't have any scars or major wrinkles, and in-game people were already calling him "kid" just from how he acted. so, strangers would say he's early to mid 20s. he thinks he's 28 or 29, but he'd admit he's lost enough time to blackouts and benders that he's not really sure but it's 30 tops. but in reality he could be years older?? my DM could throw a real curveball if they wanted and I'd agree like oh he was actually unconscious in a ditch for eight years flight of the navigator style? yeah that could've happened!!

so like, there's just no helping that he's going to be too young for himself.

which is a huge part of why he's so annoying, but also a big part of why he's so... sweet? he's not exactly a kid under there, but i think thinking "i'm the worst person in the world" and other teenage shit, he hasn't had a chance to think "there are so many terrible people in the world" and get jaded. his big secret (on par with, or part of? the human bomb thing) is still cares about people SO quickly and has to temper his instincts or keep people away just to stop even a little bit

DID YOU KNOW that sometimes characters lie. out loud to others and internally to themselves, and it'll happen right there on the page. other times they are just flat out wrong and don't know it. oftentimes they don't ever find that out. a sizable portion of any story is decidedly not cold hard fact.

Had fun trying to find a balance between recreating the original and hitting my own style! I think I got it!

Every ! in this post is an Unown!

The one on the left is from Serebii, and the reference I used, but the one on the right is from Pokemon.com and I swear I didn't see it online once when I was finding reference art. Completely different impression of the original, it's kind of freaking me out now that I'm so used to the Serebii scan.

Also there are only two Unown ! TCG cards and look how over it #2 is:

You're on the ground in this dig site and there's a real chance you're about to black out and its body might be saying "!" but its face is saying "..."

For the record, I'm doing Hourly Comics Day on the 8th! I saw this poster from the Cartoonist Cooperative, so decided to change:

I don't think anyone who did it yesterday made a mistake, just that communication maybe didn't get around. (I don't think a lot of people know the origins of the day or that it has a website or oversight at all, given how it's essentially an internet holiday at this point).

so yeah looking forward to the 8th!
