Why you may not know your true sign:
The general focus in Astrology tends to be placed on your Star Sign, but for many people this is not an accurate representation of themselves.
What you may not realize is that the placement of all the heavenly bodies influence your personality in complex ways. You not only have a Star Sign but a Moon Sign, a Rising/Ascendant Sign and the placement of each planet shows how you function. You have to consider the whole of the Solar System.

The Planets represent certain parts of our being or life: Venus - love, Mars - anger, etc. The Signs represent the way you go about things or the way in which we express the parts of our being or life: Capricorn - focused, hard working, arrogant, Gemini - versatile, quick, manipulative, etc. The Houses represent different fields of experience wherein the energies of the signs and planets apply as described in terms of experiences and surroundings: 1st House, the House of Self and associated with Aries, interpreted as first impressions and traits; 6th House, the House of Health, associated with Virgo, interpreted as routine tasks and duties as well as acquired skills.
The rulers are determined by what signs fall on the cusps of the house, but the natural rulers (such as Aries for the 1st House) will still have an influence; consider them co-rulers.
So, for example: We have two Cancers, both born in the same month, yet one’s Cancer Sign is in the 2nd House while the other is in the 7th. Their traits as a Cancer will then apply to their lives in completely different ways. The 2nd House is the house of self-esteem, money, and what we value, so a 2nd House Cancer may value emotions and their finances may be intertwined with emotions - as in a social worker, psychologist, etc. The 7th House is the house of partnerships such as marriage, business relationships, and even enemies, making a 7th House Cancer tied closely to their spouse emotionally and their friends a part of their family. So you can see that this makes for some big differences.
This is all key when you want to know about compatibility and the like.
Now, why you truly might not know your sign.
A lot of people, though they are a Leo or a Pisces etc, don’t feel connected to their Sun Sign or interpretations of their Sign.
This may be because of the Houses, but also because of the Planets.
You could be a Leo but Venus was in Virgo at your birth so instead of being a partner who is overtly romantic or wants to be a knight in shining armor, you are more shy or frightened by overt romance and patient about love.
Not to mention your Dominant Sign. I have heard many say they feel more connected to this Sign than their Star Sign, which is understandable - its influence can be seen in so many parts of your life. This is a truly important sign. More often I see that your Star Sign and Dominant Sign blend together, so it still remains key to fully understanding your Zodiac.
So, you could be a person with a Gemini Star Sign yet you feel little to no connection with Gemini - then you find that at your birth Venus, Mercury, and Saturn were all in Capricorn. Well, there you have it! Your dominant sign.
The point, it is important to know your full Astrology Chart, especially when seeking answers from the stars. So go get it, people.

Your Dominant Element is also extremely important! I know this from personal experience as a Capricorn dominated by Air. While your Sun Sign may be of one Element, you can feel completely disconnected from it!
Your Dominant Planet can be a huge influence on your life and personality! Pay close attention to your Dominant Planet and see them as a patron, of sorts. Take note of its position and movements. Learn about it, acknowledge it, even respect it.
Your Dominant Mode is also key! Very, very few people take note of this but it’s still extremely influential!
Astrology is a remarkably complex science. To understand the influence of the heavens on a person you must understand not only the placement of each heavenly body but how they relate to each other! Many write off astrology due to a lack of understanding of its complexity or feeling as if they can’t relate to it but it’s often due to only hearing of Sun Signs.
I encourage everyone to explore their natal charts and learn about astrology. While it is complex it’s not difficult to understand. It’s like a puzzle and it can be not only enjoyable but fulfilling to put the pieces together.
