This isn't a post with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) tips or a post blaming someone who either tried DBT or who checks it out and imm
written by my boss, edited by me
This is cool to see, though I am of the sincere opinion that these DBT skills should be taught at an elementary school and middle school level. I don't have BPD but these DBT skills have helped me out a lot. However, I agree with the sentiment here that DBT is not the only thing that's effective for patients.
@soulsodef yes!!! they should TOTALLY be done in schools and there's actually a movement(ish) to do so. Youth school DBT is called DBT-STEPS-A (Skills Training and Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents). I don't really know the whole picture yet but I follow DBT in Schools who wrote the book on DBT-STEPS-A. I'm working on learning more bc I am starting my masters in social work this fall and want to work in schools.

DBT takes constant work and practice daily. It’s not a magic bullet. But it does pay off dividends. Trust.

Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills: DEAR MAN
A workshop for white MMIND* folks to build critical skills for engaging in anti-racist work and practicing solidarity in action.

I sometimes feel guilty for running this blog. I am up from rock bottom, I am a graduate of the program but I am not a DBT master. There are skills I use subconsciously every day but mostly I struggle. My diary card would be far emptier than yours. I let my emotions manipulate my actions and that affects the people around me. I may have eliminated most of my problem behaviors but my emotions are still messy. So often I feel like I don’t deserve this platform I created when I don’t practice what I preach. I know what the wise mind response is, I’m not going to take any rash action, I’m just being honest. #mentalhealth #mentalillness #dbt #recovery #kindof #therapy https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Pd8N7HMFU/?igshid=5owg1z7gwl8b

Considering everything that I’ve gone through over the past 10 yrs, forgive me if I’m not enthused about all this decade reflection. I do want to reflect, however, on how elastic life is. I started this decade a relatively happy lil squish (swipe) with only moderate mental illness. I’m ending it as a relatively happy big squish with only moderate mental illness. Y’all know what happened in between, tho. Isn’t it wild that I could go from one raised point on the graph down to rock bottom and then back up to near where I started? But it’s not just those three points. It’s a thousand points over ten years scattered from the bottom to the top. If at any point you’d told me my future good or bad, I wouldn’t have believed you. It seems so impossible in the moment. But it’s not. Moods and circumstances and situations are so flexible. You just gotta wait the change out. There’s hope in that, I think. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6vc-HRnKy7/?igshid=w3cw6tc7t86c

DBT Concept
The goal is to make decisions honoring logical reasoning AND your emotional desires. The result is “Wise Mind”!
Steps to Fighting Fairly with your Partner
Choose your battles. You don’t need to address every single little problem. Some things can just be minor annoyances that you let go. Dealing with conflict takes energy and might be taxing on you, so don’t waste that energy over little things that don’t matter.
Stick to the subject. Don’t bring up other random things or complaints about other things. Focus on one problem at a time and be thoughtful about it. make sure you both know what’s being discussed.
Don’t limit potential. Past behavior does not inherently define future behaviors. don’t label your partner with things such as “you won’t” or “you can’t.” The point of conflict resolution is to make a change, so it’ll only make things worse if you believe nothing will when you bring it up.
Don’t use the silent treatment. Ignoring someone will not make things better. All it will do is frustrate your partner and it is a manipulation tactic. This behavior can even be considered abusive in some cases. It’s a pointless punishment and will achieve nothing (except making your partner feel less safe in the relationship).
Attack the problem, not the person. Focus on “I feel”, “I think”, “I see” statements. Don’t call names, don’t label, don’t attack your partner. Again, that’s just going to make things worse and solve nothing. And of course, don’t yell.
Focus on objective fact. Don’t say “you never” and don’t say “you always.” Don’t exaggerate things or assume you know everything from your partner’s perspective. Give specific, concrete examples of behavior.
Offer solutions along with criticisms. Point your partner in the direction you want them to go rather than just assuming they can read your mind and will do what you need without you telling them. Don’t just tell them what they’ve done wrong: express your expectations.
Accept that you could be wrong. You cannot possibly know everything and it’s possible that your partner might not be in the wrong. Your perceptions do not inherently reflect reality. Be okay with apologizing and owning up to your own mistakes.
When the fight is over, let it be over. you don’t need to have the last word. All that matters is that the issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved after you’ve let things rest for a while, assert your needs later on.
Self-Soothe | Distress Tolerance
So you’re in distress. You’re feeling the fire build and those urges are rising and you know there’s an explosion on the horizon. What if instead of doing something that hurts, you did something that felt good, that was kind to yourself? This is where self-soothe comes in as a distress tolerance option.
<I’ve combined self-soothe here with treat yo self (of course from that infamous Parks and Rec episode) bc fuck the rules. I think it’s similar to self-soothe and should be used both as distress tolerance AND as a preventative, self-compassionate tool.>
Self-soothe is all about the senses, so there are 5 parts (sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing). The idea is to treat your body to the opposite of what you actually want to do to it. So instead of self-harming, you caress, you coddle, you embrace, you swaddle yourself in soft love. Now, you may be thinking ‘what the fuck???’ but just like every DBT skill, you don’t have to really buy into it 100% to get started. You can think it’s a load of crap, you just have to do it anyway. When you see it working, then you can believe it.
What’s important about self-soothe is that you throw your entire self into it. Focus your whole mind on each sensation. In essence, participate in self-soothing mindfully.
Here are some activities for each of the senses you can do to self-soothe:
Sight: Go for a walk and look up into the trees. Look at some rad art. Get yourself some flowers and put them by your bedside or where you eat or somewhere you can see them easily. Watch a video or a movie that you really like, that’s pleasing to look at. Put your eyes out there in nature. Decorate your room with things that make you happy.
Smell: Get yourself some scented candles and burn those m*therf*ckers. Burn some incense. Get some potpourri. Make some tea and whiff that. Bury your nose in those flowers that you bought yourself or found on your walk. Make your favorite food and savor the smell of it. Put your face in your laundry. Do the do with essential oils if that’s your jam. Just smell whatever smells good and bask in it.
Hearing: Play your favorite music. Listen to rain sounds or birds chirping or whatever feels good to your ears. Drum on something and listen to that. Listen to whatever you can hear and linger on each sound.
Taste: Make or get yourself your favorite food or a special treat. Savor it, every part of the process. Chew gum. Nibble on some candy. Sip that tea you made. (For those of you that struggle with disordered eating, be cautious of this skill. Know yourself and your limits. Perhaps do the other senses instead.)
Touch: Wrap yourself in a soft, fuzzy blanket. Squeeze your favorite stuffed animal. Pet your dog, cat, lizard, bird, whatever. Brush your hair. Paint your nails. Take a bath with some bubbles or a snazzy bath bomb. Use a face mask. Put make up on. Wear fleece pajamas. Stick your toes in a river or some kind of water.
This may sound all ~soft pale glitter girly~ to some of you. You may be thinking ‘I’m too punk rock for this’ (I joke but that was literally me). First of all, fuck gender norms and the gender binary. Self-care isn’t gendered. Second, treating yourself with care can really make a difference. Your mind responds to how you treat your body. It can change your mood and it can definitely help you survive destructive urges. What’s important is that you try these, do each mindfully, focusing wholly on the sensation, and then notice what works so you can do them again next time.
Now, on the topic of treat yo self:
Treat Yo Self is, of course, from the show Parks and Recreation (highly recommend). Donna and Tom have one day a year that they dedicate to treating themselves. They buy themselves things, go to the spa, have a nice meal. It’s all about making one random day special, making it about YOU. It doesn’t always have to be expensive or extravagant, either.
I’d like to propose an adapted version of treat yo self, one which uses the concept of #mood to turn average moments into something special. (This sounds like an academic paper on millennial speak doesn’t it lol). Calling something a mood can do a lot of things. It can normalize something stigmatized (see: mental illness). It can also romanticize something unromantic. Let me explain.
I believe a key to happiness is turning ordinary moments into something special. Say for instance if I am staying in the for the night and have no plans. I could get a little down about feeling lonely or enter a spiral of sadness, or I could turn my night in into an event. If I wanted to watch a movie that night, instead of simply plopping on the couch and turning on the tv, I’d pop popcorn, put it in a special bowl, get my softest blanket, dim the lights, and make an evening of it. If I wanted to do some reading, I’d make a cup of tea, light a candle, put on some soft music. I’m making something totally generic romantic in a way. I’m turning an everyday activity into a #mood. Of course you can do these things without calling anything a mood (I know I’m a bit behind on my generation’s slang) but I find that it can help eliminate any shame I have surrounding doing things alone or differently than others. If you’re into social media you can snap the experience. Sharing also helps eliminate shame but be cautious of validation-seeking behaviors. We have the power to validate ourselves!!!!!
Treat yo self can be used as a preventative tool or an in-the-moment distress tolerance skills. Treating yourself from time to time, either in the traditional sense or my adaptation, can bolster your mood and decrease the frequency and power of your episodes of distress. When you’re already in distress, it can help distract your brain and cultivate contentment to aid in your urge-surfing. And it just gives you something to do instead of destroying yourself.
You might be thinking, ‘I don’t deserve this kindness bc I am The Worst.’ Your pain is valid. That’s a thought I have a lot. But tell that brain to shut the fuck up and just do it anyway. This is an opposite action opportunity. You may hate yourself, but if you want that horrible, horrible feeling to change, you have to try everything you can. So try this. Soothe those senses. Treat yo self. It just might help.
What are some skills you’d like to see us post about next?
I’ll be working on some more posts soon, and I have a list but I wanted to hear from you all about what skills you want to see first!
