the thing that i love about the mickey room drawings is that they're amateur in a way that feels perfect for a teenager that has a passive drawing interest and a lot of them are covered in smudge and eraser marks. like he put a lot of effort into it but made lots of mistakes along the way and kept trying. sometimes i'll be like "noo i'm assigning too much meaning to that thing" but like idk someone out there really did put a lot of thought into it and i just think that's really cool.

Slavic names in Shameless

It's funny to me to see how everyone calls Svetlana "Svet". Russian names have many forms and change according to case, but the variant "Svet" is used only when addressing the owner of this name personally. The short form of the name is Sveta, much less often - Lana. Evgenievna is a patronymic, part of a given name, not a family name. What was Svetlana's last name before she became Milkovich and then Fisher?

It's even funnier with the name Evgeniy. The short form of this name is Zhenya. The closest equivalent in meaning is Eugene. No one will ever call Evgeny - Ev (Yev, whatever). If he had been born in Russia, his name would have been Evgeny Mikhailovich Milkovich (with the stress on the letter "o" and the soft "l" most likely).

If Mickey had been born in Ukraine, his official name would have been Mikhailo Terensovich Milkovich. Although I doubt that Terence is his father's official name, he was most likely born Taras, which is a Ukrainian name. So, Mikhailo Tarasovich Milkovich.

The most idiotic "Russian" name is Frelania. I don't know who came up with it or why, it probably means something, but to a Russian-speaking ear it sounds stupid and doesn't sound like a Russian name at all.

And finally, Nika is a short form of the name Veronica (stress on "i" in the Russian vers.), so both of Sveta's women had the same name.

P.S. I like the choice of the name Svetlana. The name Svetlana is one of the most beautiful and "purely Russian" in its perception, created in the early 19th century by Russian poets. It is a tracing (literal translation) of the Greek name Fotinia and means "bright," "pure," or "radiant". What an irony.

thinking about karen in season 2 episode 11, just gave birth to a baby she did not want but couldnt get herself to abort. in a room with a bunch of people she did not necessarily want to be there staring at her private parts on full display under bright neon lights. the baby is born, she can't even look at it. it's not lip's. she never said he was, she told him they weren't exclusive. but lip was blinded by his desire to be a father and convinced himself that the baby was his. "what the fuck karen?!" he yells at her. and she has to explain herself, again with all these eyes staring at her and judging her. her own mother looked disappointed in her. you probably judged her too. what a whore, right? something like that. and then we get to follow lip who's upset, and im not diminishing his pain or whatever but, who's caring for her? who's checking if she's ok? you know the teenager who's married to a 37 years old, who was probably sexually abused when she was a child (by her father?) resulting in her fucked up view of sex, who had to care for her mother when she couldnt care for herself. who now had a baby and probably ruined her school year. who's on her side, ever? not even lip, who supposedly loved her the most out of all his relationships. the more i think about her the more i feel bad for her. and if you think she deserved what happened to her i feel bad for you.
