Tell Dolce & Gabbana: what makes a family is love.
Fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana just said that gay families aren’t “real families”. This is dangerous, because prejudice coming from such big names is giving anti-gay politicians ammunition to attack families that don't fit a traditional model like single parent families, families with gay, lesbian, bi or trans parents, or with children adopted or conceived through IVF. Sign now to tell them what makes a family is love: https://go.allout.org/en/a/dolce-gabbana/
Asylum for Aderonke turned 1 today! Keep up your supports and solidarity with Aderonke to get leave to remain safe in the UK. Thanks, Aderonke xxx
Sentenced to death for being a lesbian?
Aderonke fled violence in Nigeria 10 years ago and applied for asylum in the UK. But in her latest hearing this week, a Home Office barrister argued that she couldn’t be a lesbian because “Lesbians only have short hair. And they don’t have children.” Can you believe that they're saying that because she used to have long hair and has children she can’t possibly be a “real” lesbian? The Home Office is replacing real justice with ignorant clichés. They could decide Aderonke’s fate at any moment: so there is a critical window to speak out before Aderonke is sent back to Nigeria where she could be killed or jailed. https://go.allout.org/en/a/aderonke_hearing/
She WON
Wonderful news, friends:
Aderonke WON the Positive Role Model National Diversity Award!!
Over 21,000 nominations and votes were received this year paying tribute to those from under-represented backgrounds who have dedicated their lives to enhancing the equality agenda.
Freedom fighting Refugee, Aderonke Apata beat four others in the running for the positive role model award for LGBT.
Feminist and human right activist, Aderonke, fled torture and the threat of death for being lesbian in Nigeria, and has proved to be an unstoppable force in fighting for justice.
Aderonke has garnered almost 320,000 signatures online for her personal campaign to remain in the UK because she is a lesbian from Nigeria who is open, out and proud. Setting an example through this struggle fighting for her own freedom to stay here in the UK, she fights tirelessly for other people's freedom too and continues to challenge the government and legal system that penalizes the many LGBT refugees seeking asylum in the UK.
Aderonke's story was shared with the room, and will be broadcast later this year on the Community Channel. View the full list of winners here.
Here's what Aderonke said about her amazing win:
"The room at the award night was packed and electrifying, I didn't think I would be the winner for my category. When I was announced as the winner, there was a loud cheering from everyone! I am humbled to have won! Many thanks to everyone that voted, contributed in one way or the other and wished me well - you made it happened!
"I dedicate this award to all LGBT Asylum Seekers in the UK and those facing persecutions all over the world due to their sexuality and whom they choose to love".
