Just saw the claim that "more people need to play around with the fact someone can be neither cis nor trans" and I want to dig into that.

Firstly, cis and trans are not genders, they are descriptions of a relationship to the systems of power that surround gender. A trans woman's gender is the same as a cis woman's gender, but the trans woman will have a different relationship with the ability to enact womanhood.

Second, cis and trans are direct inverses in a way man and woman aren't. Man and woman are (poorly) defined collections of traits that are not mutually exclusive while cis and trans are, again, relations to systems of power that are mutually exclusive. You are either oppressed for crossing the borders of gender and sex or you aren't.

Third, this idea is clearly a product of the third gendering of trans women. It's an extension of "do what you want forever" politics that don't engage with the material realities of our society, and is frequently used by cis women to claim the aesthetics and culture of transfem culture as their own while claiming trans womanhood as a different womanhood from cis women's.

I remember as a kid asking if there was an opposite to tomboy for people like me (camab) and was told that femboy exists but I shouldn't say it because it meant something else (read: porn term, aimed at trans women)

now I see people constantly argue that actually it's not that and has always just been this nice term for GNC boys. not only that, I see people use it to say a character isn't trans, (s)he's just a femboy, which. is like saying a character isn't trans (s)he's just a l*dyboy, only a few terms down the euphemism treadmill.

are we really going to keep doing this?

kind of a vent post—

one of the weirder things about having three places you can comfortably call “home” is the way each of those places interact with your identity— i was born in seattle and lived there till i was around 14, then i moved to texas and lived there through high school, and now im in chicago for college. each of these places have markedly different effects on me and i don’t really know what to make of it.

without getting too personal i have had a bit of relationship conflict in the past month, as the identity i have in chicago doesn’t really mesh with the identity i have in texas, and i’ve realized i don’t really know which is “me.”

when im in chicago, i say “wow, this is the happiest i’ve ever been! i love it here!” and then i leave to go back to texas, and all of a sudden i realize how miserable i was in chicago, and then i think of how much happier i am in texas away from chicago.

and then i go back to chicago and it repeats again.

now i’m visiting family in seattle and this is a place where i used to be really happy, but i feel like im still in my “texas personality,” and im looking at the people around me and they all feel like strangers. i don’t know how to describe it in any way other than fully surreal.

and this person i spent almost every day of the past month hanging out with, who i ugly cried over leaving to go to seattle, is fading out of my brain to the point i feel like i only knew them a long time ago.

i saw them yesterday morning.

i feel like i’m three different people, but also only one person, and i don’t know what to do about it. who the fuck am i? why am i so miserable? i really don’t know.

this is such a strange thing to experience and be aware of, and i’m still trying to make sense of it, but if any of yall have ever felt like this before id really like to know how you deal with it, because it’s really freaking me out.
