big fan of grace being treated like some kind of mood ring for eva. not only based on how he behaves but also by straight-up asking him if it's a good time to put in a new request for equipment or if she'll give you 100 HP psychic damage for knocking on her door.

grace is humming along as he carries three coffees in a cardboard tray and a brown bag with pastries? she's going to be in a great mood, better hurry to finish up that paperwork to give to her.

however if you show up for breakfast and grace is already sitting alone in a corner looking like he hasn't slept, avoid the entire hallway her office is in at all cost.

on the extremely rare occasions you see her waiting by the door as he gathers their breakfast you might even be able to get away with giving her not-good news. (one brave engineer once tried it, and she simply rolled her eyes and told him to fix it within the next twenty-four hours)

opposite of that is when they're walking together and grace sees someone approach and vehemently shakes his head and mouths 'go away'. if you have something that absolutely cannot wait, well, good luck. you'll need it.

it's not that she is cruel or needlessly yells, she simply has this commandeering tone of voice and steel in her eyes that makes you freeze up while in her office; the moment you're out, you'll probably start sobbing.

(there was one memorable occasion where grace carried a small table into the hallway and sat outside of her office all day while she was on conference calls. anyone who wanted to talk to her had to make do with him instead.

last person of the day swears high and low that eva opened the door in the middle of their conversation, saw grace practically barricading her office, and then smiled while saying "come in when you're done."

said person doubled their bet on them being caught together in the next week.

all they did was drink expensive liquor together while complaining about politicians and stupidly rich people. the fact that they both slept on the couch in her office that night means nothing except that they both got a bit more than sloshed. freak4freak secret third thing.)

The farther I get into the PHM book the more I grasp the whole “secret third thing” Grace and Stratt have going on. I want to put them both in a microwave and spin them around.

One thing that I've noticed and appreciate about the PHM fandom is how much Grace gets passed around like a blunt.

That man is every color of the rainbow.

yes yes stratt is very scary and whatnot but i feel like we are overlooking how intimiadting grace made her too (largely in the book). because you expect the leader of the petrova task force to be cold and ruthless and scary, but then her... assistant? second officer? her guy walks in with her and he's very sweet, personable, and incredibly smart. and there's so much dissonance because you're talking with stratt about the biggest ethical decision of your lifetime and he's, like, annotating papers for her in the background. or you accuse her of being cold and calculated and this ray of sunshine just matter-of-factly goes "yep! she'll do whatever it takes!". and at the end of your meeting, probably the worst day of your life, the dictator of the world who has just calmly convinced you to do some atrocity or another stands up, gestures to him, and they casually walk out together chattering about something else like they've already forgotten you're there. that's so terrifying

First off, tags are IMMACULATE, but I look at it and boy to everyone around there should be some comfort tbh. Bc YES there is this inhumanly powerful and immoral woman forcing you to commit atrocities, and then she looks at her dead wife/dog and you see her humanity. somehow, looking at Ryland Grace makes Eva Stratt a human woman with emotions and fears and hopes and you see what is happening, you Look, and you see that Dr. Grace is actually The Most Important Person Ever, and Eva Stratt will take the world's hate to keep him alive. Her own as well.

I feel like in the movie so much of Grace and Stratt's strange relationship is a snowball effect of Grace's initial complete obliviousness to who/how powerful she actually is. She doesn't say "I'm the Director of the Petrova Task Force" when she comes to his school, she just says "I'm with the Petrova Task Force." And so at first she's just This Weird Lady Who Kidnapped Me, and then she kidnaps him again onto the boat and suddenly he's getting shoved in front of a room full of scientists and told to explain the astrophage breeding and oh no oh no now there's EXPECTATIONS, so she stops being This Weird Lady Who Kidnapped Me and is This Weird Lady Who Kidnapped Me And Much More Importantly Is The Only Familiar Presence In An Extremely Scary Situation. (Enter instinctively grabbing her hand when she comes to tell him to sit down and also whispering the Venus thing into her ear instead of talking into the microphone.)

Then however much later, oh she's dictator of the world you say? Whoopsies, too bad, I've already, to her perplexity, emotionally imprinted on the dictator of the world, I guess.

grace feeds her caffeine addiction/dependence, and she feeds his twizzler obsession, and it becomes such a mindless thing they do they barely notice anymore.

he always carries one of those little cardboard trays with him when they have a meeting (three cups, two for her and one for him) and when he sits down she slides a new package of twizzlers his way without even looking up from her laptop.

they know each other's coffee orders for every (un)imaginable situation, so when he hears through the grapevine she's having a worse-than-usual day he has an extra espresso shot and some caramel syrup added to her usual concoction; if it's really bad he gets a third one (mocha latte bc she needs the sugar).

meanwhile eva knows when to show up in the lab and drag him away, having the exact candy he's craving in her pocket (she just knows), and needs about thirty seconds to get him complaining or infodumping or venting.

sometimes, they walk together with no particular goal in mind. sometimes they end up in her office or at a meeting, sometimes back at the lab, sometimes he asks the fated question ("when did you last eat something and no coffee doesn't count, it's a liquid" "so is soup" "soup has bits in it!") and drags her to the cafeteria.

people know better than to disrupt whatever the hell they have going on, partly because once every blue moon, they get to hear her laugh and the weight of the world is momentarily lifted off her shoulders.
