uhhh so yeah! Um, y'all like it? I have a sketch of Gauge partayingggh yes I'm it's ahh, also his phone and headphones aren't colored but theyre there
btw, I know Maina Furasu is a first year, but I'm just gonna say she's a third year, cause Gauge can't have only first year friends, cause then that's like low-key pedo behavior
if hiphop weren't real its existence would sound like an exceptionally heavy-handed metaphor about racism from a really cringe didactic fantasy novel. yeah the racialized underclass in this society, the one that's constantly derided by the ethnic majority as stupid and anti-intellectual, they have a complex artistic tradition based around improvisational poetry which is sometimes enacted on a competitive basis for dispute resolution. you get judged based on the subtlety of your wordplay and the complexity of your internal rhyme schemes. the dominant group periodically gets mad about how this doesn't count as real art like their own objectively more simplistic music and poetry because sometimes it has swears in it
my stance on the trans athlete debate is always and forever going to be that sports should be completely desegregated because humans have one of the smallest levels of sexual dimorphism in the animal kingdom and the disparity we see between male and female performance is entirely caused by social factors rather than anything biological. “should trans women compete against cis women” i think cis men and cis women could compete fairly but that’s apparently a little too spicy for people to wrap their minds around bc they’ve been told their whole lives women are biologically inferior & never thought to question that. or wonder if it’s maybe a self fulfilling prophecy of some kind. are women biologically inferior or do they appear so because patriarchy demands that of us?
it's sad to me that cis people never apply their "loved one with a wanted-pregnancy" script to medical transition. like cis people often indicate they don't know how to react to hearing about medical transition, but a huge portion of that social script is directly applicable.
tell someone "congratulations!" tell them "I'm so happy for you. I know you've been trying for a really long time." ask them "do you need help with anything?" throw them a party with loved ones where you all give them some gifts in acknowledgement of how expensive it is. celebrate how far along they are. take photos with them so they have a record of being loved while their body changes. allow them to voice fears and doubts and anxieties about how it'll go, and reassure them that they'll get through the intense medical procedure coming up & you'll be there for support no matter what. let them tell you about the gross parts and laugh together. really listen to them when they talk about how amazing and profound it is that the human body can do this. share in their excitement for beginning a new stage of their life.
If there are complications, comfort them and help them navigate what's next. If they lose access suddenly due to finances or criminalization, treat it like a miscarriage and hold them while they grieve.
for those like me who cannot install alternative android forks on their phone because the phone in question is thoroughly unrootable, I would recommend downloading anyapk on your phone while you still can. In their own words:
anyapk is a lightweight Android application installer that bypasses Google's developer verification requirements by using local ADB (Android Debug Bridge) connections. Smoothly install any APK file on your device without restrictions, gatekeepers, or corporate approval.
If you're reading this after Google's lockdown date and are unable to install anyapk the regular way, there is a method outlined on the github linked above which tells you how to install anyapk on your phone by plugging it into a computer with ADB installed on it. Once you have anyapk on your phone, you will not have to do that ever again (unless you delete anyapk off your phone)

a little introduction to my oc, her name is Akane Ayano and she's a sweet little angel that somehow found her way into the League of Villains- more posts will come to show that. her quirk was believed to work based on reflexes—if she focuses hard enough, she can harden her blood crystals and it acts as a shield as well as weapons—but Dabi was quick to figure out it works based on the level of pain she endures. the more pain she feels, the more crystals she can produce and it hardens faster than using reflexes.
so back when my little brother was in high school, my mom went as a chaperone for their senior year field trip to an amusement park. which, you know, brave move to volunteer to supervise a bunch of high school seniors let loose in a wonderland of rollercoasters and sugar
my brother and his friends in this field trip group were truly great kids. but they were not above run of the mill teenage boy shenanigans. it’s the end of senior year, you and all your buddies are at the amusement park, you’re naturally going to want to act like a complete moron
there was one kid in the group who was especially prone to goofing around. committed to the bit, some may say. my mom knew that if nonsense was going to break out, he’d likely be at the center of it
so she goes up to this kid at the very start of the trip and says “hey, i’m kinda worried about this chaperoning thing. this might be a lot to ask, but can you help me keep an eye on everyone? you wouldn’t have to do anything big, just be an extra set of eyes for me.”
friends, this kid proceeded to run their field trip group like the fucking us marines. everyone is at the meet up spots at the designated time. everyone waits in line for the rides like a bunch of boy scouts. the second the horseplay gets too out of hand, this kid is getting it back under control
it’s incredible how differently people act based on the expectations you set. instead of going to this kid and saying “hey, i know you’re trouble, so i’ve got my eye on you,” my mom went “hey, i know you have influence in your peer group, so i think you can help me.”
treat someone like a problem, they’ll act like a problem. but give people a chance to help, make them feel important, and they usually rise far above the occasion. it was a stroke of genius that i’m honestly still in awe of
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service
(hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
anyways welcome back to a descent into madness courtesy of my anatomy & physiology professor. full disclaimer i have no idea what im talking about chemistry scares me so i did include a bibliography at the end and encourage anyone with knowledge in these areas to fact check me here. yes there are wikipedia articles because ths is a blog post about an anime character im not doing it up to academic standard. anyways
what started this is my professor mentioned that in full-thickness burns where the hypodermis becomes exposed that fat/adipose can leak out and start to oxidize, causing discoloration. i need to look more into it but thats what inspired this whole thing but basically that got me thinking about my previous assumption regarding dabi's scars and physical condition
my theory up until this point as to why dabi is fucking Ourple was that the flesh was necrotic but whats bothered me about dabis potential necrosis is
a) hed be sick literally all the time
b) the smell would be at its worst, arguably, during periods wthout flame use (proliferation of microorganisms) but nobody seems to be bothered by dabis smell other than the charred flesh thing
c) the skin was pink at first and sustained for three years with support and is regenerative so its not like the nomu necessarily. i know dabi saw the nomu and was like ohhhh thats how i survived buttttttt i think you can argue thats more about the regen thing. also notably none of the nomu are fucking purple
I was also pretty convinced that it had been confirmed necrotic but I don't believe that's the case. And while I'd believe Dr. Garaki would do some fuckass cadaver allograft burn recovery treatment has come a very long way in the last few decades and it just wouldn't make much sense for the sci-fi world of BNHA in my humble opinion. And notably the skin is pink when Dabi first wakes up from the coma.
Anyways to start let's discuss the Todoroki family's fire quirks a bit more generally. my running theory is that todoroki family fire is fueled by oils excreted from the skin.
sebum does react with ozone and create products like acetone and cause oxidation like human skin oil can be decently flammable we just dont make enough of it for it to cause like, problems. and if the fuel is reacting with ozone and acetone to accelerate burning that could also contribute to the smell like imagine cooking pork but its been dunked in nail polish remover and chlorine
the only reason endeavor doesnt have an acne problem is i imagine the fire burns away any bacteria but it may also explain why he cant grow very much facial hair because that much oil production causes a shortening of the hair growth cycle (although interestingly all the todorokis exhibit incredibly strong fire resistance on the scalp. more on this later) the idea of endeavor having to deal with like. adolescent level acne and facial hair growth during long periods without the fire beard is frying me though maybe thats why he does that. this also implies todoroki has really oily skin but only on one side and thats rlly funny to me
i think dabis issue with flesh staying on can be explained by the hypodermal damage of full thickness burns (skin not connecting to other tissue) as opposed to rotting, which also explains why dabis burned limbs tend to be very skinny even when dabi seems capable of building up some bulk in other areas. i think the high temperature of dabis flame isnt just burning through the oil fuel i think its also burning through fat which is why it takes longer for less fatty areas like his fingers and knuckles to burn despite using them as main outlets
full thickness burns come in contact with dermal/adipose cones which. theres a lot of science in this article i dont understand but the result may be worsened hypertrophic scarring-- causing discoloration to a purplish hue, and higher levels of cytokines and other stuff that leads to the overgranulation of tissue (look at dabis scar texture!) and excess angiogenesis (growth of blood vessels) which may also explain dabis tendency to bleed and the purple hue (lots of blood) ALSO vasodilation as we know is important for temperature regulation so dabis body is trying to cool off by sending. more blood. There's so much fucking blood in this guy
our tear ducts also have glands that produce oil similar to sebum that thusly is also flammable and what do you know those glands are all along our eyelids along the lashes
(image depicting the results of damage to these glands)
we also see dabi dunk hair dye remover over top his own head eyes open the whole shebang which is crazy but if dabi's producing way more oil the lipid membrane covering the tear membrane on our eyes could be protecting them
Now. We're told that the skin grafted onto Dabi is regenerative right
if the tissue is super regenerative-- if you look at my setsuna quirk analysis it seems vascular regeneration would be useful there. plus theres stem cells and what do u know adiposal stem cells are very resistant to apoptosis and the fibroblasts impacted by full thickness burns become reluctant to revert back from myofibroblasts and that causes there to be so many of the fibroblasts which leads to excess collagen among other things. so that regenerative tissue might be crammed full of fibroblasts. too many put some back.
now. this is acute adipose stuff grafted fat under established scarring is very successful in making it softer and more flexible but dabi is on fire so much i think it worsens the acute effects of it, which also explains why u didnt see this with the coma. The one month lifespan thing I don't totally understand but that could be all sorts of factors tbh.
skin so supple and smooth despite the fire? lipids and adipose baby
which honestly. although it wouldnt be great for Cooling Down id believe that reis side of the gene pool came with increased fat storage thats why he looks like his mommy. touya chipmunk cheeks forever
granted. burn scars shouldnt really have oil glands but i think we can chalk it up to dabis quirk factor i am cheesing that one
i also think its interesting how much body temp seems to play a role in their quirks though like it doesnt just seem to be an after effect? because of something rei says specifically before Touya lights up
so i wonder if internal heat has to do with the combustion process somehow if cooling down can help prevent (worse) ignition
im sure oxygenation has to do with it......so like you guys know rogaine? part of how it works is its a vasodilator which delivers more oxygen to hair follicles and sebum glands are directly connected to the hair shaft i wonder if the increase in body temperature and blood flow to the surface is used to create like, a little pocket of oxygen that helps with ignition.
Now. the other thing driving me a bit crazy about the todorokis is their hair. they have such great hair for people who are on fire, including Dabi, who was literally turning bone into ash. so I wanted to try and figure out how that might work, especially with the potential fuel source so close to the hair follicles. At first I just assumed maybe they produced less on the scalp, but we see Touya in this same chapter START with his hair
however there's a problem: keratin is decently flammable.
so im thinking maybe there's production of a hydrogel/SAP coating on the hair. so when the oil catches fire the hair doesnt because the coating provides a nice wet barrier similar to the stuff used for fire stunts. and I have two routes on this
theres the chitosan route, which is more complicated and would require a) the production of chitin in the body (although its similar to keratin so im not too worried there) but also sodium hydroxide aka lye which is not good for baby BUT im considering it because the reaction that produces sodium hydroxide (sodium + water) also creates hydrogen gas and heat which would give us an ignition potential (but we do then have to possibly worry about the saponification of our fuel source? although who knows that might be to our benefit. and that's only really if it comes into contact with the oil itself. but it could also contribute to the facial hair problem) Chitosan also can help with blood clotting, which might be nice with all this vasodilation.
theres also theoretically gelatin, whiich is just what u get when u hydrolysis collagen. BUT it kinda stops being a hydrogel at high temps..... chitosan is used as a flame resistant hydrogel bc it absorbs a loooooootttta water. its also antimicrobial yay so I'm leaning towards that one.
i wasnt sure if the hydrogel would interfere with the dye situation but apparently it may have even helped with the distribution and speed of the remover chitosan nanogel is used to help deliver drugs to cells thru the skin.
regardless i was getting in over my head at this point so i decided to handwave it and say there's a thin hydrogel coating on the hair the Todorokis are exhibiting shrimp behavior and producing chitin
So I imagine their hair feels soft but in a weird way because there's this thin jelly-ish coating over it.
Infections are incredibly common in burn victims and one of the highest barriers of recovery to overcome but I think Dabi almost has the opposite issue in that he has to use flame as a substitute for a healthy microbiome because it all gets nuked. Like, Endeavor and Shouto probably have microbiomes adapted for the heat of their flame, but Dabi's is, of course, just SO FUCKING HOT it probably causes some immune issues. And having a sensitive stomach could be related to not having a decent gut microbiome to help with digestion we've seen a correlation between like, C-section babies (who do not receive their mother's microbiome passing through the vaginal canal) and an increased risk of developing allergies or GI issues.
There's also Dabi's earlobes: I had originally thought they were lost at Sekoto but that's clearly not the case and they look unevenly torn more than anything. hypertrophic scar tissue, while inflexible, is pretty prone to tearing though, so it may have happened during the stapling process (and even possibly on separate occasions)
and if i can. its interesting to think about post canon survival like, dabis changes in health routine like i imagine there has to be a lot more face washing and mitigating the oils and stuff. and the purpley color may be more permanent than previously anticipated if its the result of scar pigmentation and angiogenesis. and touyas whole body probably just looks softer in general even if there isnt substantial change in body type on account of not burning through adipose tissue all the fucking time i like to think. the resemblance to fuyumi is a bit stronger yk
Anyways. there you go thanks for coming to my tedtalk. again i dont understand chemistry at all so i may be way off base but if youre into that kind of thing heres all the stuff i consulted while coming up with this:
