There's going to be stuff queued here that are very recent, and there will be stuff that I reblogged over a decade ago, and any time in between.

I really wish that Tumblr would put clear dates, times, and time zones on stuff so that that was more clear.

Update: It's May of 2026 and I'm still queueing stuff from ten or more years ago all the way to the present, so check those dates!

There are only around 1,500 native Cherokee speakers left, and most of them are elders

Little Cherokee Seeds is a program where mothers and babies spend all day with first language Cherokee speakers, speaking nothing but Cherokee, so that the babies become a new generation of native speakers. They're also teaching traditional skills and mothering practices to the mothers to pass on.

This is so so important for the survival of the language. These babies are on track to being fluent first language speakers, and they will be able to keep the language going for another lifetime.

That's exactly what's supposed to happen. People wish they could be activists, but they can't because they have to work in order to survive, so they make sure their children can be the activists.

Also, you're absolutely right that this is what privilege looks like. But for the 1,000,012th time, the word "privilege" is not an insult. Having privilege doesn't automatically make you a bad person, but it does make you more likely to have opportunities to be a bad person. It's also possible to use your privilege for good.

Would you prefer that she instead use her wealth to buy an excess of housing in order to profit and hoard more wealth? How exactly would that be the morally superior choice?
