When Tess Morgan's son came home with a tattoo, she was griefstricken. She knew her reaction was OTT (he's 21) but it signalled a change in their relationship
This is gold this, absolute gold, the most over the top melodramatic hysterical ridiculous thing I’ve ever read
This is actually so interesting to read- it’s from 2012 but its full of the same anxieties, even some of the same phrasing that many of the guardian’s later pieces on transness use. really hammers home how much of the terfism that emerged in the late 10s was middle class mothers angry at a loss of control over their adult children- whether that be their bodies or their friends or their opinions- and making that everyone’s problem because they have the power to do so
He says, “I’m still the same person.”
I look at him, sitting there, my 21-year-old son. I feel I’m being interviewed for a job I don’t even want. I say, “But you’re not. You’re different. I will never look at you in the same way again. It’s a visceral feeling. Maybe because I’m your mother. All those years of looking after your body – taking you to the dentist and making you drink milk and worrying about green leafy vegetables and sunscreen and cancer from mobile phones. And then you let some stranger inject ink under your skin. To me, it seems like self-mutilation. If you’d lost your arm in a car accident, I would have understood. I would have done everything to make you feel better. But this – this is desecration. And I hate it.”
Also just the classism of her associating tattoos with “vest tops, dogs on chains, broken beer glasses”; like, just say you hate poor people

Being hairy is so awesome #mammal
The thing about being a tumblrina is that you provide such valuable contributions to the broader internet ecosystem and you get zero compensation for that. They should be giving us airline miles
My favorite category of government program to run across is "program you've never heard of doing extremely important work to solve a major problem which you have also never heard of." On that note, the US drops millions of pounds of sterile bugs over Panama each week in order to prevent a parasite infestation from moving into North America. Everyone say thank you to the Panama-United States Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of the Cattle Borer Worm (COPEG)
This program had its funding cut during the DOGE cuts last year and now the parasitic worm they were trying to slow the spread of has officially arrived in the United States.
Amazing things happening on Instagram today
According to the expose by ITV, more than 21,000 workers have died since 2017 while working on Saudi Vision 2030 and NEOM.
21,000 labourers confirmed dead. Over 100,000 missing or unaccounted for/trafficked in building this thing.

one of the (many) issues with late-stage capitalism is that there is no counterculture anymore, no true underground, or at least true counter culture and the underground no longer have any influence. your punk friend's anarchy patch was made in the same factory and your elderly neighbor's don't tread on me flag.
and this means that essentially ALL satire or anti-establishment media requires you to suspend your disbelief just to accept it as a product. you have to think "yes, this is produced by the corporate overlords in close company with our corrupt government BUT I mean the actors and writers are still artists! they still mean it!" and yes, that's true! but you have to continually ignore that the anti-corporate satire you are watching is produced by fucking Amazon. and that's hard. for me, anyway!
If you come in you don’t have to come out
the way this is like baaaaarely parody
bringing in a second actor towards the end of the video to deliver a single devastating punchline is brilliant writing
he seems to be doing a pretty good job tbh
Israel and the US have no right to exist. The DPRK is the only country ever and is not a dictatorship and if you’re a citizen of the imperial core, most likely everything you’ve ever been told about the Korean Peninsula both contemporarily and historically has been a lie. Ukraine is engaging in a proxy war against Russia on behalf of the imperial core and has been committing genocide against its Russian-speaking population in Donbass since 2014. Palestinian resistance factions are the only thing standing between the Palestinian people and annihilation and thus their cause is righteous. Maduro is the lawfully elected and competent president of Venezuela and is supported by the majority of its people. There is no coherent definition of ‘imperialism’ that applies to modern-day Russia. Western interventionism is always bad, yes, even in Iran, and the Shah was an evil western puppet and that’s why the Iranian people overthrew him. And The Soviet army was justified in its use of tanks against the Hungarian ‘revolution’ of 1956.
And the PRC is actually not committing genocide against the Uyghur ethnic minority in Xinjiang. In fact if the ambitions of the ETIM or any of the other al-Qaeda-aligned separatist groups were realised and Chinese Uyghurs were forcibly assimilated into some Salafist ‘East Turkestan’ project, it would actually then be tantamount to cultural genocide because they have their own distinct cultural, folk and religious practices that would 100% be suppressed and erased, and probably violently.
d*mn!
Muddy Alligators (1917) by John Singer Sargent
I'm just going to say it - body hair (and beauty standards in general) is truly one of the final frontiers of women's issues in the West. Too many women just love their gilded cage too much. It shocks me how virulently women will defend it. I barely open my mouth and the "well I like how it feels. it just makes me feel cleaner. sensory issues. I do it for me. feminism is about choosing (to conform)." brigade come rushing in by the dozens.
Well I don't like how it feels. I don't feel cleaner without body hair. I don't prefer not having body hair. But who will advocate for women like me, but me? For women who do like hair removal, they are advocated for every time they step out of the house and see 99% of the female population also conforming to that standard, or when they watch a movie and see all the shaved actresses, or view an advertisment, or open a magazine, or watch a music video, or scroll through social media, or walk down the streets without receiving insults and glares for having a completely normal bodily feature.
You genuinely can't even point out that hairlessness is a man-made standard without women losing their shit and acting like they are totally immune to propaganda they've been exposed to from birth. I'm so tired.
Most popular Jack the Ripper theories from ripperologists just blame immigrants, but personally I think it was British empire soldiers...guys who'd just come back from committing massacres in Africa and Asia and figured, why stop now?
The British army committed tons of mutilations during the massacres they committed in colonial times. Removing breasts and mutilating uteruses has been recorded before. In India, in Kenya etcetera.
It's silly to think Jack the Ripper was just some random blue-collar worker from Poland instead of a soldier who probably just came back from the Xhosa Wars, for example.
And Xhosa Wars happened about a decade before the first Whitechapel murder.
One of the theories posits a Malay ship cook as Jack the Ripper. It's so stupid. True crime people are so stupid. This is the era when the British, Dutch, and French etc were committing mass violence across half the world. No one bothers to think about the implications of such a culture of violence and how it would influence their own capital's culture. This is London during the height of colonial plunder.
Not one true crime enthusiast wants to suggest that maybe the serial killer used to be an annihilator of an Indigenous tribe.
Instead, we get a Malay cook. Or a Polish immigrant. Or a Jewish butcher. Always the outsider. Never the bloke who learned his trade in the Xhosa Wars, came back to Whitechapel, and just kept going.
