Absolutely wild to read through mdzs and tally the sheer amount of lies the cultuvation world tell about and around Wei Wuxian that eventually get debunked:

Wwx purposely and maliciously ordered Wen Ning to kill Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan. Jin Zixuan died for siding with his cousin in an ambush his cousin created to kill wwx, an invited Jin guest. Jiang Yanli died protecting wwx from a cultivator stabbing him in the back, after Wen Ning was supposedly already destroyed.

Wwx attacked the Nightless City banquet for no reason, killing between 3,000-5,000 cultivators. The major clans and many smaller clans were gathered at Nightless City specifically to go back on their word to the Wen siblings to leave the Burial Mounds settlement, and to pledge to kill wwx. There weren’t even 3,000 present at the whole pledge, and wwx didn’t kill nearly all of them since a good portion of them show up to the second siege 13 years later.

Wwx ordered Wen Ning to attack the cultivators at Koi Tower, and his and Wen Qing’s surrender was a ruse to allow them close access to the clans to do so. Wwx was immobilized for three days, and otherwise does not control Wen Ning like a toy. Edit: the Jin purposely agitated Wen Ning to violence, then ensured that a majority of the cultivators in the room killed were from other clans to secure their support of the pledge conference.

Wwx had a great life at Lotus Pier, treated like he was part of the Jiang main family, only to betray them in the end. Wwx was whipped so gratuitously that he had scars as a child despite having a high-level golden core. Nobody bothered to tell him about his parents, despite Jiang Fengmian supposedly being close to at least his father before Wei Changze left the service of the clan. He was given no tablets to honor them in death, no keepsakes. Still, wwx fulfilled both of the Jiang rulers’ final wish/order to protect their son (above his own life), and wwx’s connections are why either were able to get a proper burial (unlike wwx’s own parents).

Wwx was committing evil acts and took on the Wen remnants as followers/test subjects for his dark arts. All demonic cultivators can be linked to his followers. Wwx rescued the Wen Remnants from labor camps set up, again, against the word of the cultivation world, and lived secluded in the Burial Mounds and Yiling until basically his death. The only “demonic cultivators” we see are Jin disciples who are given wwx’s notes after his death to study in an attempt to recreate his methods and secure the Jin’s power over the other great sects. Nobody cares that the Jin are doing this, even as they use other clans as test subjects.

Wwx created Wen Ning to be a weapon. Wwx resurrected Wen Ning on the request of his sister after the labor camp guards murdered him. The Jin, after lying about his destruction, try to turn him into a weapon and fail.

Wwx was killed by Jiang Cheng in a fitting moment of justice for the crimes committed against the Jiang. While Jiang Cheng’s part in the first siege was integral, he did not kill wwx. The Jiang have committed more crimes against wwx than anyone, and owe their entire continued existence to wwx.

Wwx turned to demonic cultivation because he was greedy for power. Wwx created the ghost path as his only means of surviving the Burial Mounds without a golden core. He sought no power and blatantly called out those who did (the Jin), only to be ignored because of his status. In turn, he defects from his sect and exiles himself to the Burial Mounds (with the Wen remnants), to which the sects continue to pursue him in a bid to kill the “servant” who won’t bow to them and to steal his power for themselves.

Wwx’s cultivation corrupts people, both in mentality and their health, which is why he became evil. Wwx’s cultivation path is shown to do no such thing, and nobody has precedence for saying this, as wwx’s cultivation is entirely new. On the other hand, the Nie saber technique is known to corrupt body and mind of the Nie who practice is, resulting in horrifyingly violent deaths by qi deviation, and yet no one shows care or concern about that being a problem for the whole cultivation world to have to deal with.

Wwx was ugly. Do I need to debunk this? 😭

And some ones tangentially related to him, but having to do more with the cultivation world lying to make themselves seem better than they were:

The first Burial Mounds siege was a deadly undertaking, but ultimately worth it to stop the Yiling Patriarch’s reign of terror. The siege was hundreds of trained cultivators against around 50 sickly people and a child with no tools to fight back. The only person who could fight back did not. It was the very definition of a massacre.

The participants of the first siege burned all the corpses on the Burial Mounds to release their resentment. The participants of the first siege threw the Wen remnants’ corpses into the blood pool to desecrate them, thereby imbibing them with even more resentment.

Disciples (or anyone connected to her) of Baoshan Sanren who leave her mountain are destined to meet bad ends as they are corrupted by the world. The cultivation world allows righteous people to die and their reputations to be tarnished in order to maintain their facade of “righteousness” while leaning into corruption and constant power grabs. It is often directly the fault of the cultivation world that these individuals are killed in the first place.

Jiang’s bloodline probably ended up with Jiang Cheng, even if Jin Ling had Jiang blood, he is a Jin. Is satisfying to me Jiang Cheng probably ended alone with hatred and probably only Jin Ling in his side.

Jiang Cheng made a lot of bad actions, and even if we doesn’t had more of him in the pos canon, the fact that every matchmaker blacklisted him is a end line to me. He died drowned on his own choices and actions.

Now, a long analysis about this, just because I can, I want to and I have the time to do so.

What I find more interesting is that Yu Ziyuan, even being and bitter, hateful and insufferable as she was, wasn’t blacklisted by the matchmakers and married a sect leader.

Jiang Cheng has the same personality as his mother, but he is a man (what, historicaly, makes that kind of behaviour more acceptable than if it was coming from a woman), a sect leader himself (what makes his social standing above his mother’s), and he ranked fifth on the list of eligible young masters, so the fact that he somehow still managed to get blacklisted by every female cultivator is really impressive.

Some leaders from minor sects, or even village leaders, possibly had daughters and could’ve married them off to Yunmeng Jiang. They even could’ve arranged the marriage without the daughter wanting it, because it was pretty common at the time MDZS is set. Qin Su’s parents, for exemple, could’ve married her with Jiang Cheng. They were almost the same age, she apparently fit the ridiculous list of things he wants in a wife, and marrying her with him would’ve brought an advantage to their sect, since Yunmeng Jiang is a great sect while Laoling Qin is only a minor sect. Common people married for love, the gentry married for political advantage and political alliances. Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan falling in love with each other was a one in a hundred situation.

That kind of alliance didn’t necessarily had to be made by marrying a daughter with Jiang Cheng. They could’ve chose a niece, grand-niece or even another female cultivator from their sect. It would still form an advatageous alliance for them. So the fact that no sect leader was willing to marry a relative with him or even send a woman from their sect who wasn’t even related by blood with them to marry him????? Dude, I can’t even stress enough what a big of a red flag it is.

Jiang Cheng is leader of a great sect who we know wanted to marry (as said, he had a damn list of traits he wanted in a wife) and who, after his mourning period for Jiang Yanli was over, didn’t have much to do in his life outside of leading his sect and the occasional night-hunt (friendly reminder: Jin Ling is a Jin, Madam Jin was still alive for some years after his parents died, therefore there is 99,999% of chance that she was the one who raised Jin Ling until she died and then the task was handled to Qin Su, who had already married Jin Guangyao by then, so it’s highly unlikely that Jiang Cheng had any hand on his raising outside of occasional visits). Nie Huaisang was way too occupied with his revange to bother with searching for a wife (and let’s be honest, other sect leaders probably didn’t find that much of an advantage having him as a son-in-law, since he was seen as weak, and they probably were surprised he had not made the Qinghe Nie sect face it’s end yet and thought it was just a matter of time for him to lose all of his political power); Nie Mingjue was kinda busy with the war to go looking for a wife and died not long after that; Lan Wangji didn’t get over Wei Wuxian’s death and way probably would die refusing to live in a loveless marriage thanks to the trauma his own parents’ marriage caused him, and likely would also refuse to put a woman through a marriage in which she would have to compete for her husband’s love with the memory of a dead man; Lan Xichen was also busy with the war, then busy with taking care of his broken-hearted and severely injuried young brother who was grieving, clearly depressed and self-harming, all of that while also leading a sect, and then his sworn brother died - so yeah, man was kinda busy to go looking for a wife before shit went down the hill and he himself went into seclusion.

My point with the last paragraph is: from all the sect leaders and second young masters from the great sects, Jiang Cheng was technically the only one open for marriage for a long time, so he was supposed to be recieving marriage proposals from all the four sides of the Jianghu. He also wanted to marry. Even if he didn’t, he would have to. All the other leaders of the great sects have uncles, aunts, cousins or other relatives who are in the line of succession, so even if the current leaders and their brothers didn’t marry, it wouldn’t be such a huge deal, but the Jiangs don’t, because Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli were the only survivours from when Lotus Pier got burn down. There is no one with Jiang blood to be the next Jiang sect leader, so Jiang Cheng have to get married and have an heir or Yunmeng Jiang will no longer be leaded by the Jiangs. He also doesn’t have the option of waiting to fall in love with someone who loves him too to scape having a marriage like his parents’ (let’s be honest again, that man probably loathes the idea of an arranged marriage thanks to the amazing [irony] experience of being raised by Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan) because of that very same fact: he needs to get married to have a legitimate heir, and, as a cultivator who goes night-hunting, he can end up getting killed by a monster, corpse or spirit during a night-hunt, so the sooner he gets married and has an heir, the less likely he is to die without one. 

So, taken that Jiang Cheng, wants to get married, has to get married, didn’t have anything going on that would prevent him from getting married, a marriage with him would be a political advantage for his wife’s original sect, and finding a woman who fits his requirements wouldn’t be that hard in ancient China, not being married at 35-ish was totaly not his choice, as I’ve already seen some stans of his implying (as if being canon that he was blacklisted by women wasn’t enough proof of that). The most possible reason for this is that sect leaders were literally afraid of sending any female relative or even a woman from their sects to marry him.

To be honest, it wouldn’t be a surprise if fear was indeed the reason. He tortured innocent people, refused to send help if it was a minor problem and terrorized people so much that a lot of merchants left the surroundings of Lotus Pier, so he clearly wasn’t compassionate and kind, and had a temperament worst than his mother’s. All of that would for sure make one have second thoughts at trusting a man like that to take good care of his wife and make them fear for the well-being of the woman they would send to marry him. Not even the alliance and support the said marriage could bring would make worthy the possible risks. It would be more advantageous and safe either marrying their daughter to another minor sect or waiting for Lan Xichen or Lan Wangji announce one of them is searching for a wife and have their daughter (or another woman from their sect) marry one of the Lan brothers. Hell, even waiting to take their shot with Nie Huaisang would bring them more advantage (remember, they still think he is a poor thing who has no political skills).

So yeah, Jiang Cheng digged his own grave and is taking his sect down with him. His childshness, his lack of self-control, lack of self-awareness and lack of compassion made him go from being the fifith most eligible young master to being the sect leader no one wants to marry.

‘come back to gusu with me’ was born from good intentions. lwj was worried about wwx, he thought he could help him & protect him by bringing him back to the cloud recesses. lwj presented this as a solution to (what he perceived to be) the problem of wwx’s cultivation method.

‘i want to take someone back to the cloud recesses, hide them there, but they are not willing’ is something else entirely.

this conversation with lxc follows on directly from the events of phoenix mountain, and lwj’s subsequent questioning of wwx about his behaviour in yunmeng.

phoenix mountain is important here for 3 reasons

lwj lost control of himself and took advantage of wwx being blindfolded to forcibly kiss him

wwx’s own behaviour on phoenix mountain (fighting jzx, the things he said afterwards) — what lwj considers a ‘loss of control’ due to his cultivation

the events of phoenix mountain show that public opinion is decidedly turning very much against wwx, compared to the widespread praise he received during the ssc.

their conversation in yunmeng is obviously relevant because lwj tells wwx ‘it is still best if you come to gusu with me’ and, more importantly, when wwx becomes irritated, lwj says, ‘I am the one who was out of line.’

from all these things together, it is clear that lwj recognises how dangerous wwx’s situation is becoming, causing him to reiterate that he thinks wwx should come to gusu (something wwx comments he hadn’t done for a long time). in admitting his own fault & that he is out of line to ask, it is clear that lwj is completely aware that forcibly taking wwx to gusu is completely wrong. however, lwj has also realised (from the kiss) that he is in fact completely liable to lose control over himself and violate wwx’s autonomy for the sake of his own desires.

this is why lwj’s conversation with lxc is a ‘confession’ but not of romantic feelings. it is a confession that he was not just contemplating, but had realised he was actually capable of, forcing wwx to bend to his own will.

i wouldn’t describe it as a straightforward statement either, lwj wasn’t presenting this as a solution, or expressing to lxc that he intended to go through with it. because lwj is fully aware that he absolutely should not do this, and he didn’t want to do this (or i guess, he both wanted & didn’t want to do this). lwj very rarely talks about his feelings openly, even with his brother, for this to be an idle statement would not be in his character. this is why it only makes sense to me as a confession that he had been contemplating doing something wrong.

and lwj was not saying this in order to make lxc aware of his feelings for wwx. i say this because i’ve seen many argue (predominantly from those more on the cql side of the fandom i think) that this is supposed to be a love confession. ???? it’s not, lwj doesn’t consider there to be anything romantic about his parents story, he doesn’t consider there to be anything romantic about taking wwx to gusu, forcibly or otherwise. i would argue he detests the whole idea of it. 

my thoughts on this relate to some takes i’ve seen regarding how lwj’s internal conflict in wwx’s first life relates to his parents’ story. specifically this idea that lwj had to learn that loving someone cannot mean trying to control them, when in actuality this was never something lwj believed until he was tested by the fact that the only way he could see to protect someone he loves was by completely violating his consent. it’s an arc wherein lwj’s beliefs are tested and challenged but ultimately he retains his resolve, not one of him having to learn how to love someone correctly.

all this is critical to understand about lwj wrt to how he maintains the distance between him and wwx, and is exceedingly careful from there on not to push his boundaries or question his decisions, to the point that he takes wwx back to the bm after nightless city knowing that the only real outcome from this is his death. actually, i’d argue lwj already began to expect this in chapter 75 when he and wwx both came to the understanding that the path wwx was on was his only option (that chapter is titled ‘goodbye my love’).

i just think it's so wild that lan wangji and xue yang parallel each other over having lost their loved one in such a drastic way (both souls nearly disappearing) and the fact it wasn't until their beloved was gone that they realized or came to terms with just how they really felt for them. i'm not sure if lan wangji would let himself relate too much to xue yang but i do wonder if his "how fortunate..." could also be from seeing how xxc's death and xue yang's desperation for years and years to get him back could have happened to lwj too in a world where he let himself fall into the deep end of grief. how fortunate then that wei ying came back to him...

i also think it's interesting that yi city family and wangxian family both are made up of 1- a person who sticks to their ideals steadfastly but also feels guilt about their own 'failings' enough to sacrifice themselves over and over, 2- a person who never let anyone get close to them in an intimate way, but when they found that one person they would never give up on them, and 3- a child who lost their family and was forced to live in poor conditions to survive but then was taken in by person 1 and 2 and given a new family (and 4- a formerly close loved one of person 1 who they had a massive falling out with and is hated by person 2)

Nie Huaisang's Master Plan

I've seen a few misunderstandings regarding Nie Huaisang's role in uncovering the murder of his brother, Nie Mingjue.

I wanted to go through a brief summary his entire master plan, that he carefully thought out, chronologically, since he deserves a LOT more credit than he's given.

~~The events follow the novel story-line solely!~~

Under the cut of course, because it's quite long~!

We know and love how Nie Huaisang is first presented in his comical, innocent even scaredy facade. He is not known to put that much effort into cultivation and his studies results (especially at Cloud Recesses) are exceedingly poor.

He’s also always gladly participating in Wei Wuxian's shenanigans, indulging in drinking nights and pranks + that small fact abt him owning an entire library of pornography.

Worth mentioning, that Nie Huaisang has always shown interest in demonic cultivation when Wei Wuxian first mentioned it. Especially since he wasn't adept at cultivating himself, which proves he was already ready to use all the means/short-cuts necessary to achieve his goals.

(This is presented solely from his POV but a bit of background of each situation is needed, yet I will try not to go into too many details and keep it NHS centric as parts of his plan are unfolded, which is why other main story elements are naturally skipped)!

His plans begins after his brother Nie Mingjue's death through qi deviation.

Nie Huaisang naturally becomes the new Qinghe Nie sect leader. He is still unwilling to cultivate the saber, lest the same fate befalls him, as previous Nie sect leaders have also lost their lives through qi deviation.

When Nie Huaisang notices that his brother's corpse has gone missing, he begins his search. He is only able to track down his left arm that he can neither suppress nor control.

Thus, his first goal is to find the remaining pieces.

His plan unravels chronologically as follows. step by step:

step 1. MO XUANYU

Nie Huaisang seeks out the traumatized Mo Xuanyu and goads him to perform the sacrificial summon with the incentive of revenge against his abusive family to summon Wei Wuxian back from the dead.

step 2. MO VILLAGE

Nie Huaisang lets Nie Mingjue's left arm loose in Mo village when the Lan juniors (Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi) arrive to help solve the issue of increased number of fierce corpses recently. Nie Mingjue's left arm ends up claiming the lives of all of Mo Xuanyu's aggressors; Mo Ziyuan, Madam Mo, her husband and A-tong, hence freeing Wei Wuxian from the debt of the sacrificial summon by fulfilling Mo Xuanyu's wish for revenge.

step 3. THE BODY PARTS SEARCH.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s search for the other body parts begins:

The left arm is taken to the Gusu Lan sect and it directs them north-west, to Qinghe. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji encounter Nie Huaisang who tells them about the "Man-eating castle" which is revealed to be the Nie Sect’s Ancestral Hall.

Backstory: The sabers cultivated by the Qinghe Nie Clan became strong enough to have a desire to kill evil spirits on their own even of their owners' died. As this created even more bloodshed, the sixth head of the Nie Clan came up with a plan to appease them. He built a tomb for the sabres with a number of corpses that were going to turn into fierce corpses. This way, the sabres could continue to fight with evil spirits even after their owners' deaths.

->The left arm then points to Yueyang next, where they witness the torso of the corpse being dug up by an unknown Gravedigger (who turns out to be Su She)

->Lan Wangji finds the corpse's right arm in Yi City after splitting up with Wei Wuxian.

-> The corpse reassembles itself in a headless body in a garden in Tanzhou. After fighting the corpse and playing 'Rest' to appease it, Lan Xichen recognizes its movements as that of his sworn brother. Nie Mingjue.

4. GETTING THE JUNIORS TO YI CITY

Nie Huaisang goes to great lengths to lure the junior disciples into Yi City.

It is presumed that technically he would go that far as to put the blame on Jin Guangyao quicker, if the juniors were to die at the hands of Xue Yang, which shows how strong his resolve is.

Nie Huaisang first targets Jin Ling, in an inn located in Qinghe, by nailing a dead black cat to the door of his room and a pool of blood outside as he wakes up. This happens night after night, despite him going from inn to inn, which eventually prompts him to investigate.

At the same time, Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen and a few other juniors had been night-hunting in Langya. They first find the head of a cat in their soup, and then the corpse of a cat in their beds. This prompts them as well to investigate, ultimately meeting up with Jin Ling.

Ultimately as they met, Nie Huaisang disguises himself as a hunter from a nearby village to point them accurately, directly towards Yi City, which was his goal for this part of the plan.

5. SISI & BICAO

Nie Huaisang frees Sisi and asks Bicao to inform Qin Su about her true relationship with her husband Jin Guangyao. Qin Su receives the letter the night before the Discussion Conference, which makes her take her own life.

6. MENG SHI’S GRAVE

(Jin Guangyao buries Nie Mingjue's head in an iron box with Meng Shi's body in Guanyin Temple.)

Thus, it's Nie Huaisang who retrieves the head and removes Meng Shi's body, placing a poisonous trap in its place.

7. THE LETTER -> second Burial Mounds siege

Nie Huiasang sends Jin Guangyao a letter warning him that he will expose all his secrets in seven days.

!This triggers the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds. Jin Guangyao uses the Stygian Tiger seal to control the corpses there and Su She seals the cultivators' spiritual power. After Wei Wuxian’s thorough analysis in front of the hundreds of cultivators present, Su She reveals himself as Jin Guangyao's accomplice.

8. LOTUS PIER

As the cultivators recover after the second siege and go to Yunmeng, at Lotus Pier, Bicao and Sisi (instructed previously by Nie Huaisang) arrive to tell their stories:

> Sisi tells how Jin Guangyao murdered his father Jin Guangshan

> and Bicao tells how Jin Guangyao's wife Qin Su was his own sister.

Hearing this, the clans begin to plot his downfall furthermore.

9. GUANYIN TEMPLE

Despite popular belief Nie Huaisang isn't captured against his will or helpless at Guanyin Temple. Everything he planned for Guanyin temple was extremely deliberate and well thought out as it's the final piece of the puzzle.

His plans were as follows:

He released Nie Mingjue's fierce corpse onto Yunping to hunt down Jin Guangyao

He was willingly "captured" by Su She to play on Jin Guangyao’s pity through seeing him defenseless and scared

He deliberately allowed Su She to cut his leg because Nie Mingjue’s fierce corpse can still sense that his brother is hurt

He also uses his leg wound at the very end, by overreacting to the pain, distracting Lan Xichen from a very wounded Jin Guangyao, so that he makes him think he attacked him from behind. This results in Lan Xinchen stabbing his dear sworn brother, ultimately leading to Jin Guangyao’s death.

Wei Wuxian pieces it all together at the end, deducting the lengths Nie Huaisang went to and the magnitude of his plan.

2021-02-27 Some things I want to say

WARNING LONG POST

Context first, translation of his post above will follow:

Disclaimer: I have no interest in other artists other than Xiao Zhan, and I am merely explaining the situation of the fandom in China that led us to the fiasco in March 2020. I do not care for bjyx, I ship WangXian but I do not ship real people as a basic principle.

My opinion as an international fan of Xiao Zhan and as an AO3 user (yes, I am not Chinese nor do I live in China, I just happen to be able to read Chinese) is that C-entertainment industry is TOXIC and celebrities are not free targets for you to cyberbully. They are human just like you and me. 

Everyone needs to learn a bit more about compassion. 

I am sure all of you read about the cyberbullying Xiao Zhan went through last year. There were multiple factors that started all of this, most of which XZ doesn’t talk about in this letter because of how sensitive the topic is in China. I’ve never explained entirely what happened because I personally thought that this is not something overseas fans should worry too much about. Especially since most of you don’t have a wb or db account, there’s nothing you can do about it anyway. But since Xiao Zhan himself decided to post a letter to respond to this subject, I’ll put in my 2 cents just that so everyone is on the same page.

Basically, after The Untamed aired in China, the show fandom split into 3 groups. XZ fans, WYB fans, and CP fans (or bjyx, whatever you wish to call it, those who love shipping these two real people together - not just the characters in the drama). Of course there are still people who would watch the show without becoming a fan of the actors.

At the beginning, most people thought they were good friends with each other, with all the short BTS clips from The Untamed. However, fans slowly discovered that it wasn’t the case. Some unofficial BTS clips emerged where WYB said XZ was shooting multiple dramas at the same time = 轧戏 (which is very frowned upon and a disrespectful thing to say to an actor), whereas in reality, XZ only asked for a couple of days days off during the shooting for The Untamed because his scenes in Joy of Life had to be redone and he was bound by contract. On the contrary, WYB had to ask for most weekends off because he was participating in Produce 101 at the time. Other clips shows them fighting about somethings WYB said about WWX, which made XZ mad. So this broke a lot of CP fans’ image of their relationship, and they either stopped shipping/became XZ or WYB fans only. This angered WYB’s fans, of course, which made them blame XZ for the entire fiasco.  

Other incidents continued to happen after the show which increased the friction between these 3 fan groups. XZ fans and WYB fans would fight about various voting charts, and fight with CP fans because they don’t like seeing the two actors together. In the meantime, CP fans continuously feminize and weaken XZ in order to ship the 2 actors together (it’s rather an unhealthy trend in China, I’ve been in multiple other western fandoms before - not real person shipping - but we rarely glorify weakening/feminizing the bottom of a ship, because of the underlying prejudice against real homosexuals, who are not synonymous to transgenders).

Some incidents added oil to the fire afterwards. It’ll take me too long to explain everything, so I’ll just put here the main ones to explain why there’s so much bad blood between these 3 groups of fans.

On XZ’s birthday, some CP fans found XZ’s parents’ apartment building and yelled BJYX is real. This angered a lot of XZ fans, because of how disrespectful it was towards the old couple and the clear breach of privacy. WYB fans and some CP fans were also angry that XZ didn’t reply immediately to the birthday wish on wb that WYB sent at midnight (??? XZ was busy shooting a drama, can you blame him for not being on wb at midnight? Give the guy a break.)

In November 2019, WYB filed a lawsuit against some of XZ’s fans (instead against of his own haters!) for dissing him (although I’ve never seen any proof, and a few of those fans remain active on wb now, one of whom has even defended WYB’s portrayal of LWJ before…). This angered a lot of XZ fans and CP fans who didn’t understand how he could have done this to his “friend”, and further proved that their relationship wasn’t that fantastic to begin with. WYB fans felt justified in hating XZ and all XZ fans as a result, and openly bullied XZ fans on the grounds of the Nanking CQL Concert. 

In January, The Untamed was named to Beijing Journal Drama award. CP fans and WYB fans were unhappy that XZ was named to the Best Male Lead category and WYB was named to the Best Male 2nd Lead. They attacked the award committee wb by spam commenting all their wb posts and the entire drama was pulled from the nomination afterward. XZ fans were especially angry that they started all this only for the nomination to be pulled out - because the only possibility was one Male Lead per drama, and anyone would agree that if chosen between WWX and LWJ, the character with the most scenes and importance in the story is WWX. 

Yadda yadda yadda, fast forward to February 2020, it started with a fanfiction written by a CP fan that depicted XZ as a prostitute transgender woman and WYB as a highschool kid (UNDERAGE) = AKA very sensitive material in China. It was posted on AO3, but the author posted the link of said fic on wb and a lot of CP fans broadcasted it around, so much that XZ fans became aware of it. Due to how sensitive the material is and how badly it would taint XZ’s image for his future roles, some XZ fans started reporting the wb post that contained the link (NOT AO3) and the author’s wb page. This is common practice in fandom on wb, usually done to get the wb posts taken down. This caused panic in the CP fans crowd because they thought XZ fans were reporting AO3 and that they were gonna lose the website (which is impossible, because AO3′s servers are in Sweden and not subject to Chinese laws anyway). 

Because of how sensitive AO3 was in China and how haters tried to pull in antigovernmental into their crowds, the subject quickly became too dangerous for XZ fans to get involved in. Official fan groups in China unanimously decided to ask all fans to stop participating in the online debate and stay within the fan group circle only. 

Someone on AO3 made a commentary about this incident that you can find here. She dug up a lot of info on the companies feeding money to the trolls online, but as I am an overseas fan and cannot really verify her info, I will not comment on those statements. 

Sometime in the middle of this fiasco, someone started spreading the notion that XZ fans hated fanfiction and were trying to report anything that goes against their image of their idol… And subsequently people who were not CP fans or XZ fans became aware of this problem when they couldn’t access AO3 suddenly because too much curious fans where trying to access it and they crashed the servers. However later on, people could access the website without any problems. I am not personally in China right now so I can’t verify these claims of the website being walled or not for real, but I know from various reliable sources that on March 1st it was only an overload of the server, and people could still access afterwards. 

With this however, haters (which include previous CP fans, WYB fans, and other idol’s fans) attacked XZ for not telling his fans to stop reporting, for not saying anything. They attacked XZ’s endorsements and spammed hate speech on the products he was promoting. They would rate 1 star in all his dramas and songs on db, and then buy accounts to further rate 1 stars (yes that thing exists in China, everything can be bought in China, don’t ask me why.) The reason why I believe that all this wasn’t coincidental, is that barely the day after the fiasco started, someone posted on db the exact list of all his sponsorships, detailing exactly who to call to protest, what words to spam in the comment sections of various official brands’ wb accounts. This entire thing was too well planned to be just a normal fandom fight. 

Whether it was other actors’ fans who organized this to cut down competition, we will probably never know for sure. The following year was laden with fake rumors, hate speech blasting from multiple directions. They attacked his personality, saying that his polite manners are just for show (when the reality is that he has always been a gentleman even when he wasn’t popular). They attacked XZ for faking donations to Wuhan, forcing him to show his donation certificate to prove himself. One of his friends couldn’t stand the cyberbullying anymore and revealed publicly that his grandfather recently passed away (the date on this drawing is 2020.03.03, he couldn’t post this last year). 

His friend defending him from the cyberbullies, saying that he had plenty of reasons to stay silent. That his grandfather passed away recently and his family has been planning his funeral. 

(Sources also said that his mother was hospitalized a few days afterwards. And that haters went to his mother’s hospital to harass her and her nurses)

Haters saying that XZ is using his grandfather’s death to excuse himself (??? is he not allowed to grieve like a normal person???)

Haters wishing that XZ becomes depressed from the cyberbullying and kills himself, wishing that he was dead, wishing that his fans were dead too. Photoshopping his picture into a funeral portrait to curse him

Haters admitting they are cyberbullying XZ, but rejoicing in the fact that they are so many so XZ can’t sue all of them. They have also reported his upcoming dramas for various reasons just so they cannot be aired.

I’ve only posted here the tamest screenshots, there are far worst ones that I won’t be posting because the amount of vitriol give me nausea just looking at them. 

In all this fiasco, antis gave him the tag of “idol who didn’t manage his fans well”. But Xiao Zhan never thought fans needed to be trained, he thought of them like normal people, and their love, something to be treasured and not used. But some people in China still blamed his fans for starting all this mess, and partly him and his studio for not being able to stop it.

Some Things I Want To Say

Today, I have something to say to everyone. I’ve thought of a lot of ways to do this, but in the end, I chose the simplest way to tell everyone about all my feelings and thoughts in the past year. These opinions, maybe they won’t be able to represent anything, nor won’t they be able to change anything, but I still wish to say this today. 

On this day last year, the incident happened very quickly, as if a bomb exploded on my face - endless phone calls, never ending message notifications, everyone’s opinions and questions came in like a tsunami. I wanted to say something back then, but I didn’t know what exactly. I was apprehensive of making a statement, afraid that one wrong word, or one wrong sentence would be taken the wrong way and end up adding oil to the fire. This is why at that time, I chose not to say anything. 

I never thought that the online fighting would grow bigger and bigger like an avalanche, getting larger crowds involved, and gradually leaving one person’s control. Even though afterwards I made repeated statements to make amends, it could not develop as I wished it to anymore. 

This life filled with broken protests and tumultuous noise continued to this day. And I felt I was going through a very dark and never ending tunnel. Unrest, ruminations, turmoil… I have also asked myself what did I do wrong exactly, why did everything after that day became as if it were an uncontrollable vessel. 

I spent a lot of time to digest, and then spent a lot of time to understand, understand everyone’s words and actions. Slowly, I started to understand what everyone was criticizing about me personally. The moment that I chose not to say anything, I lost that window of opportunity to reason with everyone. So I was wrong, from the very beginning. 

At that time, I wasn’t yet able to clearly understand the entire incident, to understand everyone’s feelings, nor did I know what kind of responsibility I had to carry as a public figure. Thus, I missed that opportunity to communicate with everyone, and wasn’t able to withstand the responsibility of letting these antagonizing feelings grow. Now, I can clearly recognize that throughout this year, this criticism that everyone had against me of “Idol Who Lost Its Voice”, was correct. During this year I reflected upon this repeatedly, as a public figure, I have to not only improve myself within the boundaries of my profession, but also have to carry the social responsibility that comes with my influence. To influence those who like me, who follow me, towards the right worldviews within my capacity. Even though my studio and I have already expressed some opinions through wb and interviews, but scars that this incident that brought such antagonistic emotions between different circles are still difficult to heal. 

No matter how late, my own problem has to be corrected. I would like to express my first comment: Xiao Zhan, would like to apologize for “losing voice” towards those who have been affected by this incident. This is my first responsibility towards the public, face the problem and admit my faults. 

Also, I would like to use this opportunity to speak with my fans. This is my second responsibility. In one of my interviews last year, I have said, I do not really agree with “managing” my fans (some celebs in China have hired people to manage fan groups in order for them to behave in certain ways for their purposes. Antis tried to spread the false rumor that XZ also had those people and that they directed their fans to start this mess), because everyone is an individual. No matter my studio nor myself, we do not have the authority to “manage” them like some would manage workers in a company. Afterwards, I reflected many times, maybe I cannot use the word “manage” to define my relationship with my fans, but I do have the responsibility to “correctly influence, and actively advocate”. So today, I would like to tell my fans, everyone has the right to like or hate something, and it should be respected and allowed within their own space. Of course this right should be reasonable, should not hurt anyone else, and remain within the boundaries of the correct values and norms. I hope my fans and friends can understand that no matter which profession, no matter what age, one’s own preferences or actions should not cross the line for one’s professional ethics or disrespect basic principles. 

(Here he is referring to reports of teachers using his name in class or asking children to say his name to cheer for him. This is a problem that occurred also with other celebrities in China, and for which he has already expressed himself previously.)

No matter online or in real life, everyone should be responsible for their own words. I also hope that we are not represented tags like “xx’s fans”, that we do not set this as the basis of where we stand on a topic nor do we let this determine what’s right or wrong. Everyone have their own hobbies and interest, respect everyone’s choice and freedom of speech. No matter whether they like me or hate me is their own right. Passion, this should be a source of strength to everyone, I do not wish for it to consume or hurt anyone. Perhaps I cannot change this kind of environment, but at least for you and me, today is a new start point. 

At last, I would like to talk a bit about myself. Ever since I came into this field, until today, I have always been defined by some tags. But the reason why I originally stepped into this circle was my passion for performance and music. And this is why, I will keep working on becoming a better actor and singer. The sudden criticism of “having lost voice” made me realize that, other than what I have always focused on professionally, I have to also be able to carry the responsibility of a public figure and an idol. I was born in a normal family in Chong Qing, and have lived a normal life, like many other people, for more than twenty years. Today I will also use this opportunity to apologize for the words I have said before as a normal person (I’ve already talked about it here), for the people I have inadvertently hurt. As I work hard on studying to become a better person, I will try to become a better “public figure”, so that these two Xiao Zhan can blend in together, for a better self. 

This past year, no matter big or small, I have to be responsible for the incidents that happened because of me. I can demand this for myself, but I have no right to force it on other people, so I can only hope that those who really like me can really listen to me: please be a bit more reasonable for things outside of personal preferences. Live a healthy life, put more time and energy onto one’s real life, and less on the senseless fighting behind fake IDs and unreliable online world. Only to become a better self.

Sorry for any grammar errors, this post was really long to make and I didn’t proofread. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to translate the entire thing for overseas fans since you don’t understand the entire context, and because I wanted my wb records collection tag to be complete, I felt I had to… and I got carried away trying to explain everything. Tried to summarize it as much as I could.

As a fan of Xiao Zhan and also an AO3 user, I would still like to apologize for how this bullshi*t ended up disrupting respectful and peaceful users of AO3. The Untamed tag did not contain hate fics before all of this happened, it is unfortunate that a place where there used to be only love, ended up being tainted by antis and haters.

To the anonymous person who asked me a few months ago if I supported bjyx, this is my answer: You have the right to like whatever you want within your own corner, as long as it doesn’t bother anyone else and isn’t against basic principles. I ship WangXian as characters from a novel, but I have never liked RPS as a principle.
