i especially dislike many works that try to fold all sorts of different mythologies into a single consistent schema because they tend to heavily privilege western conceptions in doing so- see 'dragonology' books twisting basically every mythical reptilian under the sun into the mould of 'a species of dragon', implicitly centring the beowulf-style firebreather as the default from which all other mythologies derive, or basically anything that does worldwide vampire bloodlines

I hope this isnt a highjack but i was thinking about this exact thing but from an archeolgical stand point. Calling a lóng and a wyrm and a drakōn the same thing deletes their historical context. That erodes modern (especially western) understanding of not only ancient but also still existing cultures. That lack of context and understanding is one of the things that has helped anti-intellectualism flourish.

Its well known that most pseudo archeology is deeply racist and this reduction is part of it. How many people point to "dragons" as proof of some ancient panglobal society somewhere hidden in our past. Or the Phoenix, the fènghuáng and the Wakinyan.

Folklore and mythology are so vital to understand each other's past and present and understanding that is so vital to a good future. Once we start losing faith in one science it slips and dominos. And i earnestly believe crushing vaguely similar mythology into one big over arching thing is a very dangerous first step on the path to degradation.

That trailer is sawdust you have to sift through the find the crumbs and people are making a meal of it.
