Speaking the Language of the Supernatural with @_spirits
For more photos from Tilly’s mystical world, follow @_spirits on Instagram.
“You can call me a witch, if you’d like. To some degree what you’re saying is that my work or my personality makes you think of some spiritual concepts—and that’s a compliment to me.” For Tilly Garcia (@_spirits), an artist in New Jersey, USA, inspiration comes from the natural world around her. “I pull energy from the earth to feel grounded, which allows me to create, but my head is in the clouds forever.”
To strengthen her connection to the natural world, Tilly volunteers at a nearby wolf sanctuary to be closer to the creatures whose energies resonate with her own. “Wolf is like a big-brother spirit to me,” she explains, “a protective energy providing support and a sense of belonging.”
On Instagram, Tilly interweaves her own delicate drawings alongside photos from the sanctuary and careful arrangements of collected antiquities and sacred objects. “I want my work to evoke an otherworldly—yet familiar—feeling, like a dream you can hardly remember,” she explains. “I like the idea of déjà vu, of suddenly being reminded of something from a past life and then forgetting it right away. I like that beautiful sadness.”
