Camille Norment Rapture, 2015 Nordic Pavillon at the 56th Venice Biennale If, as the Norwegian experimental composer Arne Nordheim commented, “Music lives in the span between poetry and catastrophe” the visitor to the Nordic Pavilion will walk into such a sculptural and sonic installation of conflicting forces, a place torn between poetry and catastrophe, a space between a body in trauma and a body in rapture. Rapture, a site-specific multi-sensory space structured in three parts; an architectural intervention, a set of performances by musicians and vocalists unfolding during the opening days and at specific times during the Biennale, and a series of three publications, which explore the relationship between the human body and sound, through the visual, the sonic and the architectural body.

Project of the Day—Harry Bertoia made hundreds of sound sculptures before his passing in 1978, many of which have never been widely released. Now, Important Records wants to put together high quality digital transfers of over 350 hours of Bertoia’s Sonambient work, including 11 LPs—which was made using the sound properties of various metals—so that his legacy can be properly preserved.

Milan Grygar Performance Drawings

“I came to the certainty that what prevails in the world is correlation: sound is connected to the visual and the visual cannot exist without sound. Everything a human does is connected: visual and acoustic phenomena complement one another.” – Milan Grygar

From the mid-1960s, Milan Grygar (Zvolen, Slovakia, 1926) started to create “acoustic drawings” by merging the visual art with the sound. In 2001, Performance Drawings: Milan Grygar was exhibited at the Drawing Center.

Grygar’s work was inspired by the rhythmic taps and scratches that attended the making of marks on paper. For Grygar, the “acoustic event” would “from that point on be stronger for me than color.” Sound was then the juncture between hand and the space it moved through, between the drawing tool (be it a hand alone or an object driven by a hand) and a sheet of paper.

All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act. This becomes even more obvious when posterity gives a final verdict and sometimes rehabilitates forgotten artists.

An Exhibition of World Graphic Scores, Minami Gallery, Tokyo, 1962

This exhibition included international artists, especially from the U.S. Fluxus branch, as well as graphic scores by members of the Jikken kōbō 実験工房, or Experimental Workshop –see previous post,– like Toshi Ichiyanagi, Yuji Takahashi, Toru Takemitsu, Joji (George) Yuasa, Yasunao Tone, among others.

New photobook review for JCH! Was excited for this one, it is an often overlooked photo book by Fukase that is as the title suggests as series of family studio portraits…You can see why coming of off Solitude of the Raven why someone would over look a book on family portraits but it is in the symbolism of what he does with such a mundane genre of photography that makes …check it out!
