“When I Close My Eyes, I See Green” colored pencils on toned watercolor paper
So the medium of this self portrait was inspired by the drawings of Saturnino Herrán. The initial idea came from a doodle in my sketchbook. I’ve seen hair used as a symbol of time, which is why I chose to have a long braid weaving in and out of the banana leaves. It represents the 20 plus years it’s been since I’ve visited my mother’s home country. I added the American flag print to my dress to reference a shirt I wore in pictures of me in Honduras. If I could describe Honduras with a color, I would say green. I remember when I was 8 years old in awe of the different shades of green that I saw there. I just wasn’t used to it. So with Honduras in mind, when I close my eyes I see green.
I’ll save the finishing touches for later.

A moment captured on a Sunday morning from when I was in Brownsville at the flea market. I love that place, I always find great still life material. #figurativepainting #señores #lapulga #texmex #aotd #sundaymorning (at 77 Flea Market) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8EaQ5nnLbN/?igshid=1ac8z5hbs57zf

Decided to paint my husband’s favorite barbacoa place. His family has been buying barbacoa from them over 20 years. Originally, Tacos Ivan was a food cart, and now they have this spot. The three people sitting on the stools are my husband and my in-laws. Tacos Ivan is hands down the best barbacoa I’ve ever had. Any other barbacoa place, as my mother-in-law would say “¡nada que ver!” We were the first customers that Sunday. We got there at 6 AM.
