just got a call from the american psychiatric association. you old dogs, i said, picking up on the first ring. how many times i gotta tell you to lose this number. i don’t want you coming around here anymore. “listen, toots, we’ve been doing some thinking,” they says, and i says, guess there’s a first time for everything. “you’re a real funny dame, sugardoll. reviewing criticism, we’ve determined that the biggest issue with our previous diagnostic and statistic manuals of mental disorders is the anonymity of it all. we’ve been circling around a vague figure of the mentally well without defining the traits of a mentally well person. there’s no personality. what we need is a cute broad with a couple opinions to model the psychological norm.” so i’m saying back up and give it to me straight: i’m the new standard of sanity? can i get that in writing? and they say, “as the american psychiatric association we hereby state that you are the baseline and any deviations from your personality are deviations from the very concept of sanity, at least in the united states psychiatric system.” they’re making it public tomorrow. it’s a nice gig, if you really want to know. never thought they’d let a woman do it.

A problem with the way #OwnVoices got co-opted as a marketing tool is that there’s this implicit assumption that representation by a member of the in-group will always be GOOD representation (i.e., well done, not stereotyped, not bigoted against that group) and this simply isn’t true.

People have internalized biases, of course, but also, members of minority groups often have political reasons for attacking other members of their own minority group. Is “Yiddish isn’t a real language, it’s a hybrid jargon that represents a culture of filth and squalor” antisemitism? Clearly so. Is it still antisemitism when it’s the official language policy of the state of Israel, as it was for awhile? Hmm. Interesting question. It’s certainly SOMETHING unpleasant.

I’ve heard that Justine Larbalestier may have some Jewish heritage yet this doesn’t make me any happier that she published a YA novel whose narrative suggests that Holocaust survivor epigenetics make you into a manipulative psychopath who leeches money off your innocent gentile friends. I don’t think I’d have been happy with that one even if she were the Jewishest woman on earth, actually. My problem with the handful of apparently very Reform or secular authors who’ve written fantasies in which Judaism is the normative religion yet it still looks exactly like a highly assimilated Reform Judaism is clearly WAY less extreme, but it’s still a problem, and I still want them to stop.

People will use “they’re literally X” “it’s OwnVoices” to shut down discussion but I don’t think being a minority absolves you of being thoughtless about how you represent minorities. “Sherlock BBC can’t be homophobic because Mark Gatiss is an ENTIRE gay man 🙄” no it definitely can still be homophobic, and the fact that it is. Is worse 😘
