“Fine print gets some of the best of them. If it wasn’t such a frivolous lawsuit I’d suggest suing them. Though you probably wouldn’t be the first to try it.”

You know, I’ve known for a long time now and…yet I can’t really recall this little detail: what’s the reason you’re here anyway? Well, I totally get you, as I said, but…who knows?! Maybe something bad will happen soon….(someone should stop myself talking like that! )
“Oh no that was me being sarcastic, but I guess you’ve twisted my arm enough. I can use lunch for this.”
“Yeah, honestly I just say my name sometimes and they all remember. My parents died and my sister’s still got a year left and just needs someone around. It didn’t feel right having someone else step up.”
“Doubt it.”
“You get people acquitted for murder, or what? What kinda lawyer?”
“No just civil cases here. Like lawsuits. The kind people don’t want to be stuck in jury for.”
“Hard cider. Here you go.

So, a lawyer, huh? Sounds like a real drag.”
“Thanks,” he said, picking up the glass for a drink before he set it down. He laughed a little at her statement. “Here it is. Other places it’s actually decent.”
Oh, no, don’t tell me such thing: there is no “ a same I can’t”. You can! You can do whatever you want, you just need to want it much enough to make it happen! Trust me, I am a lawyer!
We have this in common, August! This is something that annoys me to a little bit. Of course, some of them can actually really put up with your nerves, but it’s rather rare. However, the people need us here so we are helping them, right? Back when I was in Ireland and I worked as some kind of an intern at some lawyers company it was…well, I’ve had nights when I couldn’t actually sleep. I think sometimes I miss them!
“Okay, then I’ll put it this way: It’s a shame I value my job a lot so I choose not to play hooky and go on a walk.”
“Yeah, I mean there’s definitely a reason I’m here. And I’m grateful for the job that they offered so quickly. But I was in New York, I had offers I didn’t know what to deal with. Nothing I imagined growing up here. My parents certainly hadn’t had amazing stories about their cases they had here.”
“God, you can talk. It was a yes or no question. What’s your drink order?”
“Lawyer. Comes with the job I guess. Hard cider.”
“You know, I first thought that living in a beachside town would mean summer year round not this whole needing a coat and scarf in the middle of November. Where do I sign up to get my money back? Who do I send the complaint to?”
“I don’t know how to tell you this but it’s in the policy of Bayside to have no returns or take-backs when it comes to weather.”
“Well, cheers to your truth, then.
Let me buy you a drink? Tryin’ to do more nice things for people so I don’t burn in Hell, or something.”
"A free drink sounds great, but you really don’t have to get me one because I was honest or I’m having a rough time. But if you really want to for avoiding burning in hell’s sake, then I’m not gonna stop you.”
Trust me, I get you perfectly even if now I might feel a little guilt, but..I can’t help it. Autumn is my favorite season and this town has one of the most beautiful late autumn days. It’s just wonderful…too bad you can’t join this spectacle. However, I wish you good luck with the case…it is a tough one, right?
“I’m not saying any of this to make you feel guilty. I can’t blame you for wanting to enjoy the weather. It’s just a same I can’t. It kinda is, but nothing I can’t handle. I’ve had worse thrown at me. Civil cases just have never been my choice. I don’t want more crime around here, believe me, it just gets boring as I’m sure you know.”
Curious enough, today I have a day off and even if I should be probably working on a case, I cannot lose this wonderful weather so I guess I’ll take a walk on the beach. This autumn’s sun and chilly air is better than any cup of coffee…it also reminds me of Ireland a bit…. Anyone that wants to join me?
“Unfortunately, I don’t have time since the case I’m working on can’t wait. But it sounds nice though.”
“Well, you’re not in much luck when it comes to criminal cases here. Unless some teen decides to do something reckless – which from my stay here so far isn’t much.” She nodded, “That’s true. At least you have that, being in your field and all. Oh. Well, I wouldn’t pry, but I wish you the best about that.”
“Oh yeah I know. I actually grew up here. I remember when my parents would come home talking about their cases it was like some bedtime story at the dinner table. Some people are shocked I decided to continue studying law.” He shrugged before he shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. I’m used to prying anyway. But thank you.”
“We’re both here, aren’t we? Got no reason to judge you– Pot, kettle, all that shit.”
“So what is your excuse, then?”
“I mean it’s not really an excuse, it’s more of a truth, but it’s been a rough week and Friday couldn’t wait.”
Zara looked over the counter and tapped her chin. “Well, we’ve got pumpkin, poppyseed, and cherry like always. There’s a chocolate muffin, but that seems, like, a little wild for you.” She perked up and picked one of the muffins from the back. “This is one of the cinnamon chocolate chip ones I baked this morning!”
“A little wild for me? It’s like you don’t know me at all.” He laughed a bit. Chocolate was life and anyone that disagreed wasn’t only lying to everyone, they were lying to themselves. “Chocolate, cinnamon. Both good things. Yeah, I’ll have that.”
“Well, you know, exercise is important and all. You can work those tiny muscles you’ve got and make them even bigger by getting your ass to work. But I’m not your personal trainer, so what do I know?” She said distractedly as she swiped through her Instagram feed. “Yeah, it was Nasty Gal. They regrammed a picture of me in one of their dresses.” She held the phone and odd angles. “I can’t tell if the caption is all that great but their style is a little off. Oh well!” she put the phone down with a dramatic gesture. “What can I get for you?”
“That’s a nice thought, but no I’m not giving up my car.” He laughed a bit before he nodded. “Well at least you were regrammed I guess?” He wasn’t exactly an expert in that department, but he could try. He thought for a moment about what he wanted. He was such a creature of habit, but sometimes he changed things up a bit. “What muffins do you guys have today?”

“So I want to, like, go somewhere but no one in the goddamn town has a car I can borrow. Like auntie will even let me use her pile of junk, as if. Even worse, I have to serve snot-nosed kids cupcakes all day tomorrow just because little Jimmy was born on a Saturday. Jesus, can people stop with the living already?” Zara’s phone dings. She perks up instantly. “Oooh, I got a regram!”
"Well, I’d offer my car, but I use it every day. I like exercise, but I’m not walking a mile and a half to and from work every day. And I wish I could, but I can’t help your Saturday either.” August glanced at her phone when she looked at it before he laughed a little. “At least something’s looking up?”

“I wouldn’t know what to tell you. They suggest counseling for me, but I never went. No, you’re fine. Don’t worry about it. But no, I’m not really better, but I’m good enough to get up every morning I guess. I’ve always done better handling other people than myself. I guess I might be getting there. I just can’t remember what there is.”
“It’s funny you say that because I was. August. August Schroeder.”
