renee mostly worked at the gym for the free workout’s, she hated everything else about the place, people didn’t come in to have a nice chat or gossip, and renee loved both. except she didn’t think of gossip as gossip. all the men there stank and groaned and was just plain annoying and the girls were just stepping away all day and then renee had to go and clean the stupid machines for them cause that was apparently too hard to figure out. so yeah, there was really only one upside to all the downsides, until a certain august wolff suddenly stood there at the reception looking handsome as ever. “ we have a strict dress code here, august. “ she called out with a grin as she walked up to him, eyeing the plastic bag before grabbing it with a satisfied smile. “ i’m always hungry “ she stated, though he’d clearly already figured that out not that it was rocket science. “ and you just thought of me? i’m flattered. “ she smiled and walked past him grabbing his hand to tug him outside, she hated the smell of sweat and especially when she had to eat. “ i was actually just on my way to lunch, they just have the driest sandwiches ever so you kinda saved my ass there. “ she tells him and sits down on a bench outside the gym.

“Didn’t quite have you pegged as the type to work at a gym of all places,” August told the other as he allowed himself to be lead outside, easily trailing behind the brunette as she found a place for the two to eat. Although there was truly only one sandwich available inside the bag, August having eaten before he came, the free lunch was really just an excuse to see Renee. Even if he figured he would be welcome to drop by without a reason. “Though next time I’ll be sure to dress appropriately,” He teased, sitting beside her as he did so. “--- Spandex and sweatbands, right? ‘M not quite sure what people are rocking in the workout department these days.” With that, he hummed. “Your coworkers seem nice...” He commented. Maybe a little unhelpful, he thought internally, though decided to leave that bit out. “Hope I’m not causin’ any unnecessary drama for you by stopping by.”

“How? Well, I live her now.” That same smile is on his face. It’s so fake, but he has convinced himself that every smirk he wears is how he truly feels. Convinced himself that seeing August can no longer affect how he feels, convinced himself that August isn’t the reason for any of this change, convinced himself that August didn’t break his heart and convinced himself that a broken heart didn’t change him completely. Eventually, all those lies were going to cave in on him, but Robin would be damned if he let any of that show around the other boy. Humming under his breath, he took one last look at the brunette before him. “Nice shirt, by the way. Maybe one of these nights I could talk you out of it.” The pickup line is said much too casual and honestly, it’s a little fucked up seeing as it’s not a joke, but he doesn’t care. The smirk never leaves his lips and he never stops being fake because that’s who he is now.

“You’re right. You were a wonderful first run, and you know what they say, practice makes perfect.” August was wrong. Robin was not the same boy he had been back then. His glasses were no longer, contacts taking their place so he could show off his pair of blue eyes. His hair was no longer messy curls but an almost straightened quiff perfectly styled into place. His outfits were no longer sweaters and oversized hoodies, but nice tight fitting jeans and jackets. His outer appearance wasn’t the only chance, though, his inside changed as well. The spineless, pure, sweet, hopeless romantic kid was gone. In its place was a tough, cocky, flirtatious adult. Someone who he would have never recognized to be himself all those years ago. But when he looked at August, the boy looked the same. Same height, same charm, same wasted potential, and a part of Robin was happy about it. A part of him wanted August to be stuck in place while he kept moving forward. “I should go unpack. If you’re ever free, I could show you all the other things I changed while you were gone.” He mused, a wink following as he picked his box back up from the ground.

Perhaps he had been wrong, the boy before him hardly the same as he’d remembered, all shallow smiles and meaningless words now. And while the offer was tempting, his charm surprising to say the least -- at least for August -- there was no way that Robin truly wanted to fuck him. Not after everything that he had done .. how hardened he had apparently made his heart. Hate fuck him, perhaps; give him a taste of his own medicine. Show him the best night of his life and then leave before the sun even began to consider rising. Though August kept his facade securely intact, smirk never wavering from his lips as he simply tilted his head in response. “---- Your glasses,” He said simply, as if his words were a mere observation rather than to remind the other exactly who he was attempting to shake. “That’s what’s missing. --- Not bad, just ... different.” With that, he allowed him a tight lipped smile. “Bet I could still make them fog if I wanted to, eh, Ro?”

Taking a step back then, August simply nodded. “I’m on the third floor if you ever need me.” Though before he could leave completely, he called to Robin once more. “------ And, Robin?” He questioned, eyebrows raising as he did so. “Welcome to the building.”

“How can you press a button?” Life was funny sometimes. Port St. Lucie had been a blip on his map for quite some time. The first time he heard anyone mention it was August. His sister lived there. So maybe a part of Robin came here hoping that August would be here or at least visit. Maybe a part of him wanted to come just to fulfill a promise that would never come true, a promise to come here together. Or maybe he just came here for a fresh start or a way to say hey fuck you, I did fine without you. Honestly, Robin wasn’t sure why he chose this city. There were so many other places to pick and yet, he wound up right here. That’s why this was so funny. Robin wasn’t prepared to see August right now. He didn’t plan on what he would say to him or have any harsh one-liners planned, it was all an accident. When he called out for help, he couldn’t even see past the box enough to realize who was standing near the stairs.

Yet, his shock turned into a coy smile. His hands gently dropping the box to the floor before crossing over his chest. Four years ago, he would have smiled but now, all that could grace his lips was a smirk. “Yes well, looks like I have much more advantages than you now.” He mused, words coming out smooth and calm even if he could feel his chest tighten with every passing moment. Standing before him was his first love, the one who got away, the one who broke his heart and his spirit. He finally had a chance to ask him why, but Robin was so broken that he convinced himself that he didn’t care anymore. So instead he stood there, a cocky grin on his lips and blue eyes looking at the other. “Honestly August, couldn’t even press for the elevator? As I remember you used to be pretty good at pushing people’s buttons, Handsome.”

Despite his cool and calm appearance, never being one to wear his heart on his sleeve regardless of his suave demeanor, August was truly frantic on the inside, heart physically clenching inside his chest as he stood silently before the other. Because what could he say? At the very least he could give a lame apology for leaving all those years ago, though it seemed futile at this point. Swear that he would’ve left a note had he ever thought that the two would see each other again? Of course Robin looked good, he always had been devastating in a way that August had never been able to explain .... but to comment on something as minor as looks simply to fill an already awkward conversation? That just wasn’t him. Though he could tell that the other wanted him to; wanted him to see just how well he had done, even without him by his side.

“---- When I said how I meant less of how can I help, and more so how are you here,” August told the other then, gaze traveling over Robin’s handsome face as their gazes came to rest. However, at the boy’s final comment, he could tell that he hadn’t come for pleasantries; no, Robin wanted a fight. And while he wasn’t willing to give him one, not just yet, he was hardly the type to simply lie down and take it. So, with his own plan in place, he finally convinced his legs into the direction of the blonde before him, steps heavy on the stairs as he allowed a lazy sort of smirk to pull onto his lips; all an effortless sort of charm, just as he’d always been. Because while Robin was physically different, surely he was still the same, easily flustered seventeen year old he’d known all those years ago. With that, he pushed the elevator button going up, his eyes never wavering. “And as I remember, you were quite the fan of having them pushed,” He retorted, tone eerily calm. “Especially when it came to me. Suppose nothing there has changed, eh? Except that perhaps you’ve grown into your desires some.”

Most people would move in all their stuff and then gradually unpack. Robin, apparently, hadn’t done this whole ‘moving thing’ correctly. It took six days for the truck to drop off his things for the past week he had been eating out and sleeping in a sleeping bag. Finally, this morning he got the call that his stuff was finally going to arrive. After waiting around for an hour or two, he managed to get all the boxes from the truck to the front of the apartment building. Now he just needed to get them upstairs to his room. Grabbing as many as he could, he huffed out a bit and made his way through the lobby. Only when he reached the elevator did he realize he didn’t have a hand to push the button. Catching someone coming down the stairs, he called out. “Hey gorgeous, any chance you could help me out?”

Having just come back from a run around the block, August was drenched to say the least, once grey shirt now a decent shade darker as he jogged into a walk, arms stretching up above his head in a cool down as he made his way back into the building. It wasn’t very often that he opted to exercise --- god forbid actually went for a run, like he was some kind of fitness enthusiast. However, he supposed it was a nice day... and without anything else to do, his roommate fast asleep on their shared couch after a long day at work, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to get to know the area a little bit better. Though as August typically was, too lost in his own headspace to recognize the surroundings about him, without even realizing he’d managed to walk directly past a startlingly familiar face from his past, barely registering that Robin’s voice had called out to him until he was too tangled in his tank top not to look dumb.

“----- How?” was all he managed as he stood gaping before the other, looking far more rumpled than he’d began as he stood nearly bare and flustered. Suddenly standing before the boy, he felt seventeen all over again, too young and far too dumb to realize that he was throwing away one of the greatest loves he’d ever have the pleasure of experiencing. Gone before the other had even woken up, August had walked out of Robin’s life without so much as a single word of apology, bailing... just as he always did when things got too hard to handle. Though the Robin he was currently gazing at was hardly the same boy he’d abandoned all those years ago, definitely older now, and far more confident. “Puberty was good to you, I see,” He went onto say then, flat, not daring to move any closer despite his obvious need for help. “---- As I recall, I used to have the advantage of height on my side.”

Coming up to stand behind his roommate, August placed his hand’s on the redhead’s shoulders, beginning to massage without so much as thinking first as he easily buttered the other boy up. “.... Y’know what I’ve been craving?” He hummed lowly, preparing to make a request of the other as he easily worked at the knots loosening beneath his thumbs. “Those peanut butter cookies you made last week. --- The one’s with the peanut butter cups in them?” With that, he bent down just low enough to grin innocently in Eli’s direction. “We’ll make a trade, yeah? Twenty minute massage for a batch of those bad boy’s. I’ll even do all the dishes once you’re done.”

“----- ‘Scuse me,” August started, eyebrows raising in question as he addressed the blonde standing at the front desk, gaze briefly searching the large gym’s main floor as he attempted to spot who he had come looking for. Obviously not there to workout, it was clear that he was on a mission, having no time to be bothered with flirtatious bats of eyelashes as he attempted to remain unaffected. “If you wouldn’t mind, love, could you tell me where I can find ... ----” Though before he could finish his thought, it was then that a familiar voice met his ears, a small smirk pulling onto his lips as he turned to see Renee standing behind him. And with that, he allowed a small chuckle. “Thought you might be hungry,” August told her easily, holding up the plastic bag he’d been carrying then for her to see as proof before offering it in her direction. “It’s just that I was in the area, so,” He lied easily, a half shrug given as he rocked back onto boot’s heels. “If you’re too busy, however, I understand.”

“Do you?” August asked, feigning innocence as he rocked back onto his heels. “I could’ve sworn it was done with a marshmallow...” Though as he realized he’d been caught, he chuckled lowly to himself, gaze settling easily onto the other as he reached out then to grab her hand, pulling her gently to a stop. Perhaps it was the alcohol coursing through him, or the chance of his secret getting out weighing heavily on his mind --- but suddenly, kissing Renee seemed heavily important. “--- Though if I get rid of the marshmallow,” August drawled lowly, smirk playfully pulling onto his lips as he took the brunette’s cheeks carefully into his hands, “Then wouldn’t that just mean we were...” And with that, he leaned down to kiss the other as he trailed off, noses bumping briefly before their lips found home.

“no, fuck you.” she says immediately, coldly, when august tries to begin a conversation with her again. but he keeps talking. she scoffs, shaking her head. “you don’t deserve to know a goddamn thing about her august. you shouldn’t get to know what she likes or what she’s been doing or what she thinks of you because i’ve been here and you haven’t.” she takes a seat on the sand, sighing out. “she remembers you. she just doesn’t ask about you anymore because she doesn’t think there’s much of a point.” she rolls dark eyes up at the sky, painted a deep shade of fuscia with the setting sun. it was bullshit. she takes another drag from the blunt that burns slowly in her grip and she shakes her head. “time getting away from you is a year when you PLANNED on leaving for six months. you didn’t plan anything. you didn’t say anything. you disappeared for five fucking years, august. that’s not time getting away from you, that’s you deserting sienna – and me! you don’t think i didn’t want out of that shithole, too? god! i can’t believe you - do you really think you can ever make up for that? seriously?”

“I know,” August said simply, flatly almost, his sister’s berating words hitting home. “I know, alright? I----” Huffing heavily, his jaw clenched. “I know.” It was a lame response, one that he knew Sloane would hate. But it was the truth; everything that the other was saying, he’d admonished himself for ten times over. Especially the first year, when the nagging voice in his head had nearly managed to direct him home --- though with time, and well thought through forms of distraction, slowly he had managed to silence his conscience. “You won’t even let me try?” He asked finally then, hazel eyes dragging away from the ocean’s edge, rather to land on his sister. “I might be your brother, Henny, but the version of me that you used to know.. I’m not---” Shaking his head, he attempted to find the correct wording. “I’m not going anywhere,” He settled on finally. “And if you’ll let me, I’ve got a shit ton of time to make up for.” He’d been younger then, forced to grow up after he’d tossed himself into an unforgiving world, not even slightly prepared. “Please,” He practically whispered, voice pained. “We’re still family even if I am a fuckup.”

Probably,” August chuckled in return, “Seems very girl scout-like, if you ask me.” With that, he held up the marshmallow to his lips absentmindedly; still raw, despite the other’s amusing horror. “--- When I was younger, like middle school, we used to play this game,” He went onto say then, “Somethin’ like suck and blow? Or suck and ... something. Who knows. But that’s what marshmallows remind me of, y’know? You would have to pass it between your lips without letting it drop, and if you did, you were out.” Wiggling his eyebrows playfully, he shot Renee a teasing look. “Can’t exactly do that with the roasted variety, now can you?” Without noticing, they had somehow managed to wander towards a more secluded section of the beach, the couples starting to vary the further down they went, some talking other’s making out, as to be expected. “I’d say I’d show you, but you seem pretty caught up on your good ‘ole roast.”

“no, no no. don’t say you missed me. if you miss a person, you call them. you text them. you don’t just show up after five years and say you want to talk, god!” hands slide through loose bangs, though seeing her twin really makes her wish she didnt have her hair in braids so that she would be able to rip her hair out, which is really what august currently is making her want to do. “no! we can’t talk. tell you what, you stay here, i’ll go fuck off in new york for five years or whatever, and then i’ll come back and THEN we can talk, because that’s what i think is fair.” eyes flit around suddenly, taking in the people staring at them. “oh, fuck off! you want a show then go read that fuckin’ gossip bullshit.” she rolls her eyes, wandering off towards the water to avoid becoming a bigger spectacle. whether august followed her or not was up to him.

With a heavy sigh, August watched as his twin made her way down towards the water’s edge, briefly debating whether or not he should follow suit as his hand absentmindedly brushed against his now bruised jaw. “---- Show’s over,” He murmured finally to the people continuing to stare before deciding it was best to go after Sloane, feet falling heavily against the sand as he trudged off in her direction. And while he didn’t say anything at first, the two simply standing in silence as August allowed his gaze to settle on the waves ahead, it wasn’t until he sighed once more that he broke the silence. “.... So,” He started quietly, “What’s she like?” He knew his sister would know who he was talking about, their youngest sister somewhat of an elephant in the theoretical room amongst all his other faults. “Bet she doesn’t even remember me, huh.” With that, he continued on. “--- Y’know, I didn’t intend to be gone for so long. Time just... got away from me, I guess.”

The two of them couldn’t be more different, and yet, Eli already considered August to be his best friend in Port St. Lucie. From day one they clicked and since then, the boys had only grown closer. In such a big town, it was nice knowing someone had his back. Even if it was just a little protection from drunk idiots and flirty strangers. “Auggie, the bi superhero and Eli, his pan sidekick.” He mused fondly, taking a sip of his drink. Getting knockout drunk wasn’t exactly Eli’s plan, but it seemed like it fit fairly well in August’s. “I think I saw some floating around before— pretty sure they were gonna do body shots, though.” A small scoff escaped his lips to hide the laugh. Just the image of them doing body shots was ridiculous. Or maybe it was just ridiculous for Eli, after all, August always seemed to be the more adventurous type. “Food, on the other hand, I can definitely help with. Some people brought snacks, the guys are grilling hot dogs and someone brought brownies. Although, I might stay away from those because I’m not sure what’s in them.”

“We would make a decent crime fighting duo,” August commented in return, smiling fondly at the nickname the other had recently dubbed him with. “---- Though I’m known for getting distracted easily. ‘nd I’d probably have to be bad cop between the two of us, knowin’ your soft ass.” With that, he glanced down sadly in the direction of his empty solo cup, suddenly remembering that he was empty as he turned his attention back to his friend. “Body shots,” He commented with a scoff, head shaking before the redhead could get any ideas. Although it would be entertaining to say the least to see the other squirm, body shots never ended happily for anyone. “Hard pass. --- Too sticky, y’know? It seems like it’d be a good idea in the moment, but then you’re walking around with a moist bellybutton for the rest of the night.” Taking Eli’s hand into his own then, he set off in the direction of Eli’s supposed lead, unsure of which he was more ravenous for--- sustenance, or alcohol. “Pot,” He answered flatly, glancing over his shoulder at the other as he gave him a sort of self explanatory look. “Weed is in them, Eli. And if you’re not lookin’ to get toasted, I suggest you stay far away. A hot dog on the other hand.... Goes great with vodka, in my experience.”

“meant it as more of an insult than a compliment,” she hums out easily, eyebrow raised in his direction. he was cute - but he wasn’t her type. she preferred bad boys. “surprise me,” is all she says, scoffing at his assumption. “what, just because i’m a girl you think i’m a lightweight? i can handle more liquor than you could.” another lie. plus, she was underage, but she wasn’t going to bring that up. “i’m not getting wasted tonight though; i really don’t want to fall into that fire over there.”

“Not because you’re a girl,” August replied easily, back turned to the other briefly as he continued to concoct whatever mixed drink he could manage to throw together with the limited supplies that was provided. “--- More so because of the fact that you look like I could pick you up and throw you.” With that, he turned back, offering the girl the solo cup as he did so. “Down one of those, and you should be set for the night. But incase it’s needed --- Stop, drop, and roll always come in handy,” He teased, giving her a wink as he tapped their cups together. She was nice, obviously --- in an obviously young sort of way. Though he wouldn’t lead on that he knew.

“ well, i wouldn’t put it that way, you make it sound way worse than it is. but hey you’ve got me here now so if i were you i’d stop complaining and enjoy my company while you have it, i’m a wanted lady as you know. “ she playfully said even though she had absolutely no plans for the night, well besides finding roza at some point but she could be anywhere and right now renee was enjoying august’s company. as he reached for her marshmallows she lightly slapped his hand in a failed attempt to stop him from stealing any. with a shrug she just grinned. “ i’m weak. i get drunk way too easily and i just get so tired when i’m drunk and do weird stuff, i once tried to cook cheerios on a frying pan and then i suppose when that didn’t work i grabbed my duvet and sleep mask and went to sleep on the kitchen table. “ she laughed, she didn’t remember it herself but there was definitely a picture of it somewhere on the internet. “ and also i’m surprisingly bad at mixing drinks. “ she told him and raised a brow at him. “ you’re also eating marshmallows completely wrong. “

Though August had been listening, he couldn’t help but furrow his eyebrows at the brunette’s final quip, thought process briefly derailed as he turned to shoot her a curious look. “---- You’re tellin’ me I’ve been eating marshmallows wrong for twenty two years?” He questioned teasingly, hip briefly bumping against hers as he chuckled beneath his breath. “I didn’t know there was a correct way to eat the dumb things, but if you’d be willing to enlighten me...” With that, he took a dramatic pause, waiting for the other to take over. “I’m all yours, oh wise master. ‘Nd this better be something more groundbreaking than just a good ‘ole roast.”

pouting at his feigned hurtful expression for a few seconds “ no don’t worry, you’re very morgan freeman. “ she assured him with a laugh. bringing her cup of soda to her lips, mimicking his actions letting out a small “ cheers. “ before taking a sip of the liquid. “ people only like me because wherever i go i always bring food. and people love free food. “ she joked, it wasn’t a lie though. digging into her bag to pull out a bag of marshmallows and graham crackers with a small chuckle. “ see what i mean? “ looking at him she feigned an expression of pure offence, before cracking a smile. “ they’re more like acquaintances really. well you’re not wrong. “ she grinned and raised her brows at his words before eyeing the crowd as if she was actually contemplating whether or not there was someone she wanted to talk to. “ don’t you think they look a little busy? you’ll have to do for now. “ she teased before tugging him away from the crowd by the arm to get away from all the chattering and loud laughs.

“’m your last resort, huh? Figures, I knew this was too good to be true,” August teased easily in return, allowing himself to be tugged as he followed behind the brunette willingly. Honestly, he didn’t mind getting away from the crowd behind them --- especially considering his friends here were limited. That, and he always had had a soft spot for pretty girls. With that, he hummed, reaching over then to swipe a marshmallow as he grinned teasingly at the other. “--- What’re you drinking, anyways?” August asked then, briefly attempting to glance into the other’s cup before shooting Renee a questioning raise of his eyebrows. “Soda...” He mused, taking a bite from his stolen marshmallow as he chewed thoughtfully. “--- Because you aren’t a fan of alcohol, or because they ran out before you could grab yourself any...?” Either way, he was jus curious.

“don’t call me that, august.” she rejects the cute nickname ‘lenny’ she’d coined from lennon, his middle name, in favor of something more serious. “what the hell? why aren’t you in new york? that’s where you’re supposed to be. that’s where it’s normal for you to be. why did you come here? i –?” brows furrow in question. she shakes her head at her twin. “you shouldn’t be here.” she withdraws a blunt from the sleeve of her bathing suit cover, lights it up and blows smoke at the ground, trying to be polite to the partygoers around her. she’s hoping that maybe she can bring back her high and she won’t be so frustrated with august, but she doesn’t have a lot of faith in this strategy.

August could tell that his sister was making a point of distancing the two, her sharp tongue evident of that fact as he simply held up his hands in surrender. “I didn’t come to fight,” He told her quietly, practically feeling the gazes settle as Sloane nearly ripped his head off. “I just---” Allowing a small smile to quirk onto his lips, he gave a meek shrug. “I missed you, y’know? I’ve got some catchin’ up to do.” With that, a sigh passed with between his lips, heavy as ever as he watched his twin light up. “------ If I’d known you’d be here tonight, I would’ve said something. I wouldn’t have just... let us run into each other.” Giving Sloane a hopeful look then, he nodded towards the water. “Can we talk? Somewhere that isn’t... here? I mean, we’re pretty people and all, but we’re kinda startin’ to draw a crowd hen---- Sloane,” He forced himself to finish.

she had been enjoying her evening, a pleasant high making her feel like she was hovering a foot off the ground. then, something made her plummet, and her eyes narrow, the familiar face grounding her. anger fueling her actions, she’d stride over to august and, in one fluid motion, would sock him squarely in the jaw. “what the fuck are you doing here?”

He’d barely even registered that it’d happened until his jaw was suddenly aching, one moment invested in making his way through the undulating crowd, doing his best not to spill his precariously filled drink, the next practically wearing his vodka cran, the crowd around the two yelping as they dived to get out of the way of the fist fight apparently breaking out. “--- You think I’m pretty? Let’s talk more about that,” August replied easily, briefly batting playful eyelashes in the other’s direction before he turned his attention back to the alcohol, two solo cups in hand as he attempted to decide what to mix together that would be the least vomit inducing. “Because flattery will get you everywhere with me.” With that, he nodded towards the brunette. “What’ll it be, gorgeous?” August asked then, “I’m thinking a tequila slammer with a twist? Unless you’d rather we go back to the beer option. Although I have to say, while drinking games are right up my alley --- My tolerance is impressive. You’d be sorely put to shame.”
