The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites
We attended this show at the National Library of Singapore. We means Matthew and I. Ena and Olivia didn’t go as Olivia is too young to appreciate. Besides that, infants below 1 year old is not allowed.
We got the tickets with the backstage passes. The show started at 10.30am for 40 minutes and the backstage tour was also for 40 minutes.
The show was performed by a 3-person team from Canada. They call themselves the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia.

Get up close and personal with the endearing characters from Eric Carle’s favourite classics, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and The Mixed Up Chameleon performed by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia from Canada. Against a black-lighted background, experience the sight of colourful puppets as they come to life in a unique form of storytelling through theatre.
Meet The Very Hungry Caterpillar as he chomps away on his journey to metamorphosis! Starting out as a baby caterpillar eating anything and everything along the way, he changes into a beautiful butterfly at the end.
Then, join bored Little Cloud who decides to stray away from his fellow mates to go on a thrilling adventure transforming himself into an airplane, a sheep, a clown with a funny hat and even a shark!
And lastly, follow The Mixed Up Chameleon who doesn’t think he’s special changing colours everyday. He finally embraces his uniqueness only after an identity calamity happens when he decides to emulate the different animals he meets at the zoo.
Actually, the sequence of the show was “Little Cloud”, followed by “The Mixed Up Chameleon” and lastly “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Save the best for last!
Matthew really likes the hungry caterpillar. I am not sure why. The book is really simple and somehow can capture his attention. He was not really into The Little Cloud and The Mixed Up Chameleon. Maybe because he does not have those books. But nevertheless, he still showed interest and was really attentive the entire show. Really awesome to see a kid with short attention span to focus on the show.
We sat on middle of row H, which is the 10th row from the stage. Ena was worried if it’s too far for Matthew. But I knew that the Drama Centre Theatre should not be that big.
5 minutes before the show started, we made our way into the theatre. Matthew grabbed his booster seat and we found out seats pretty easily.

We sat down and observed other families waltzing in. Show started on time, but some parents were still waltzing in! I was slightly annoyed as one parent practically blocked Matthew for a minute or two as she sat down with her kid without any consideration that she’s blocking the rest at the back.
Matthew was not very quiet during the show. He had the usual questions like “where’s the cloud?”, “what is that?”, “why is cameleon not walking on the grass?”, “where’s apple?”, “where’s orange?”
At the end of the show, the folks of Mermaid Theatre introduced themselves and took in some questions. Some of the kids asked about how they made things the characters and how the caterpillar ate the fruits etc. Pretty interesting to see how they made the show.
After the show, we went backstage and had a tour to touch the characters and to really see how they created the show. Matthew got to see all the characters but was only mostly interested in the fruits!
Overall, it was a good experience for Matthew and now I know he can have a long attention span. But only for things that he understands or enjoys. Not sure if I can bring him to a Star Wars movie yet though.
