“    a   firmer   grasp   on   the   hilt   may   prove   to   be   more   helpful   in   gouging   your   eyes   out,    brother.       ”       the   tease   had   been   accompanied   by   features   pulling   up   into   a   slight   smirk,    as   alyssa   had   been   graced   with   the   sight   of   cregan   twirling   his   trusted   blade   within   his   hand.    taking   a   seat   beside   him   upon   the   bench,    she   finally   allowed   tense   shoulders   to   fall    —    the   strain   of   being   forced   to   utter   such   pleasantries   to   people   who   did   not   deserve   them   in   the   slightest,    finally   catching   up   to   her.        “       it   feels   as   if   we’re   here   to   be   toyed   with.    father   only   cares   about   keeping   the   peace    …    i   wonder   how   peaceful   we’ll   all   be   without   our   heads,    or   turned   to   ash   from   dragonfire.       ”       humming   softly,    shoulders   would   rise   and   fall   in   a   soft   shrug.        “       which   would   be   the   more   unfavorable   way   to   go   ?       ”

there  is  no  lost  love  that  gysella  held  for  her  uncle  viserys,  not  even  in  death.  but  he  was  family,  a  father  to  her  cousins  and  once  a  lord  of  these  lands.  surely  the  princess  knows  this  as  well  as  she,  the  blood  they  share  as  often  favourable  as  it  is  not.  yet  out  of  grace,  gysella  allows  lysaera  to  name  him  as  her  uncle,  and  her  uncle  alone.  there  is  little  to  be  gained  from  righting  something  that  means  little  to  her  to  begin  with.  "it  is  not  you  i  fear."  an  admission  —  a  true  one.  "should  i  name  a  name  and  cannot  prove  myself  true,  they  would  have  me  tried  for  treason.  you,  they  would  not  hurt.  it's  a  noble  cause  —  the  crown  princess,  on  her  quest  to  find  the  truth  of  her  blood's  last  grand  spectacle.  but  they  will  wonder  who  whispered  in  your  ear.  surely  you  would  not  have  me  sowing  dissent  in  the  realm."  at  this  she  lifts  her  head,  eyes  meeting  lysaera's.  "would  you,  princess?"

the   princess   noted   the   way   that   gysella   had   not   denied   her   suspicions,   but   would   only   speak   of   fear   and   disturbing   the   realm.   a   soft   sigh   would   escape   her,   “   and   what   exactly   gave   you   the   impression   that   i   had   planned   to   implicate   you   in   any   way   ?   ”   lysaera   knew   how   invaluable   whispers   could   be   —   certainly   when   they   concerned   something   as   dire   as   the   death   of   her   own   blood.   who   had   been   bold   enough,   elusive   enough,   to   pull   a   feat   like   this   off   ?   “   the   man   or   woman   responsible   did   not   have   the   goodness   of   the   realm   in   minds   when   they   committed   this   crime,   did   they   ?   it   would   be   treasonous   for   you   to   withhold   information   from   me,   my   lady.   ”   gaze   would   meet   the   other’s,   lithe   fingers   toying   with   the   golden   lion   ring   adorning   her   index.   “   a   name   …   a   house.   i   have   my   own   suspicions,   but   i   fear   that   they   may   be   biased.   ”

It had been years since the last time Aenys had been in Dragonstone. He had been but a child back then, so his memory of the place was failing. And that's how he came to be standing in the late prince's bedchambers, certainly not the place he wanted to be after what had happened. A voice behind him startled him, catching him off guard as he turned around to face the person. "No, I would assume not." He said as he walked towards the exit of the bedchambers. "I have been here before, when I was a young boy but I do not remember most of it." He admitted, letting out a sigh. "Exploring alone might have been a bad idea." But it was in his nature, he loved exploring and getting familiar with his surroundings.

the   face   of   the   man   was   not   one   that   alyssa   had   recognized,   but   perhaps   there   was   comfort   to   be   found   within   that   fact.   shoulders   visibly   relaxed   then,   “   this   doesn’t   seem   like   a   place   that   would   favor   the   youth.   it’s   cold   —   uninviting,   just   as   people   would   assume   that   winterfell   is.   ”   her   home   was   far   from   it,   though.   such   gross   assumptions   had   only   come   from   southerners   would   would   not   last   more   than   a   mere   couple   of   hours   in   the   north.   “   what   else   are   we   meant   to   do,   if   not   explore   ?   it   isn’t   as   if   we   are   being   provided   with   any   thrilling   entertainment,   aside   from   the   threat   of   dragons   resting   atop   the   castle.   ”

gilliane  takes  the  first  opportunity  to  be  rid  of  the  crowd.  now,  far  enough  away  from  the  pit  of  vipers  (  a  place  no  northerner  should  be  at  but  one  her  father  was  more  than  glad  to  accept  an  invitation  to  ),  she  takes  a  breather  with  a  company  she  knows  will  make  this  whole  situation  slightly  better,  if  only  because  she  forgets  all  about  it  for  a  few  moments.  thin  lips  smile  as  her  hound  comes  to  her,  showing  her  a  piece  of  driftwood  he's  gotten  between  his  teeth.  uncovered  hands  run  down  the  hound's  back,  a  great  dane  sized  canine  that  is  bound  to  keep  unwanted  visitors  away  ━━  if  only  due  to  the  dog's  sheer  size.  still,  it  was  not  enough  to  keep  all  away  as  footsteps  grew  closer  and  closer.  gilliane  sighs  and  speaks  to  magnar  as  she  takes  the  piece  of  driftwood  away.  ❝  go,  magnar. ❞  she  throws  the  driftwood,  watches  as  her  dog  goes  for  it.  then,  she  turns  her  attention  to  her  newfound  company.  ❝  looking  for  a  place  away  from  the  crowded  hall? ❞  eyes  still  remain  on  magnar,  voice  monotone.

after   such   a   tense   encounter   with   the   princess   of   dragonstone,   alyssa   had   welcomed   the   sight   of   a   familiar   face   —   someone   who   she   knew   shared   her   discontent   for   being   so   far   south.   “   looking   for   you,   actually.   i   was   in   need   of   a   break   from   playing   nice   with   southerners.   ”   just   as   it   had   been   clear   that   her   friend   was.   alyssa   took   a   few   steps   closer   to   her   side,   sighing   as   she   watched   magnar   fetch   the   piece   of   driftwood.   “   we   should   not   be   here   ..   it   feels   as   if   we’ve   been   lured   into   a   trap,   does   it   not   ?   i   don’t   plan   on   staying   long   enough   to   find   out.   ”   with   a   soft   shake   of   her   head,   alyssa   turned   to   her   friend   once   more.   “   i   wonder,   how   much   wine   would   it   take   before   attempting   to   swim   back   home   will   sound   like   a   pleasant   idea,   hm   ?   ”

it   wasn’t   at   all   surprising   to   hear   —   her   cousin   finding   comfort   within   the   skies   to   avoid   the   chaos   down   below,   the   entirety   of   the   seven   kingdoms   with   their   hidden   agendas   and   false   sympathies.   lysaera   had   grown   tired   of   hearing   them   all   herself,   and   she   was   not   who   such   condolences   had   been   meant   for.   “   it   was   no   meant   to   happen   under   these   circumstances,   i   understand,   but   there   is   no   one   more   fit   to   secure   our   home   than   you,   cousin.   now   is   no   exception.   you   have   my   full   support   in   discovering   the   truth,   in   fact   …   there   have   been   whispers.   many   had   wished   to   bring   destruction   to   our   house.   ”   the   princess   would   only   talk   herself   out   of   that   impending   tirade,   as   she’d   heard   her   cousin’s   gentle   voice   asking   for   her   to   stay   —   and   stay,   she   would.   “   i’m   thankful   to   have   found   you.   perhaps   you’ll   be   able   to   help   me   put   a   stop   to   daemon   leaving   with   another   betrothed.   ”

erena  had  never  been  truly  tender  in  friendship.  the  omens  that  came  to  her  in  dreams  began  pressing  down  on  her  like  the  sea  when  she  was  as  young  as  ten  and  two.  at  ten  and  six,  her  head  had  dipped  beneath  the  surface  forevermore  —  her  girlhood  innocence  swept  out  in  the  undertow.  mere  moons  later,  it  would  take  alyssa  from  her  too,  a  connection  that  had  existed  against  both  the  will  of  their  houses'  storied  histories  and  the  trip  wire  tensions  that  festered  between  their  fathers  and  brothers.  their  mothers,  contrarily,  had  shared  a  closeness  that  they'd  passed  unto  their  daughters.  youngest  bolton  had  reached  for  youngest  stark's  hand  for  years,  until  she  found  that  she  could  no  longer  see  it  through  the  prophetic  fog.  a  friendship  that  had  began  in  the  laps  of  their  mothers  had  ended  somewhere  in  the  woods  between  the  dreadfort  and  winterfell.  in  truth,  alyssa  and  gilliane's  companionship  made  far  more  sense.  gilliane  had  spent  much  of  her  time  in  the  dreadfort's  kennels  growing  up,  always  harbouring  an  affection  for  hounds.  when  erena  thought  of  it  now,  a  rage  bloomed  within  her  that  was  animalistic.  she  wanted  to  pick  alyssa  up  in  her  jaws  and  shake,  eat  of  her  memory  until  only  bone  remained.  when  it  counted,  erena  could  be  wolf-like  too. she  is  crouched  at  the  base  of  the  dragonmont,  picking  carefully  through  the  foliage  that  grew  sparsely  there.  footsteps  on  silt  and  rock  break  her  from  a  stupor,  half  herself  and  half  dreaming.  “  you  are  not  so  subtle,  "  she  prompts,  not  turning  from  the  task  at  hand.

as   it   would   turn   out,   lions   and   dragons   had   been   the   least   of   alyssa’s   worries   on   that   dreadful   island   —   no,   her   true   vexation   was   something   more   familiar   to   her.   someone,   who   the   youngest   stark   had   not   considered   crossing   paths   with   as   much   as   she   should   have.   their   gods   did   not   lack   any   semblance   of   humor   as   alyssa   stumbled   upon   the   dragonmont,   and   laid   eyes   upon   the   girl   who   was   once   the   only   person   she   would   have   thought   to   seek   out   during   such   a   time.   footsteps   were   not   nearly   as   silent   as   she   had   hoped,   as   she’d   turned   away   to   leave   erena   to   her   own   devices,   and   her   eyes   shut   tightly   as   she   had   been   caught.   exhaling   deeply,   the   stark   girl   would   turn   on   her   heel   and   approach   her   former   friend.   “   have   i   ever   been   ?   ”   arms   folded   protectively   against   her   chest,   as   if   she’d   had   something   to   fear   from   the   other.   “   i   never   could   surprise   you,   ren.   should   i   save   my   breath,   simply   ask   you   how   this   conversation   will   end   instead   ?   ”   you’ve   seen   it   already,   have   you   not   ?   just   as   you   saw   the   end   of   us   caring   for   one   another   ?

bennarion  misliked  being  counselled  by  those  he  did  not  know.  everything  about  dragonstone  counselled  the  visitor  to  be  fearful.  sheer  drops  off  of  stone  walls  onto  black  sand  beaches  below,  dragon  head  statues  ever-looming,  the  beasts  themselves  circling  like  gulls  high  above,  cutting  in  and  out  of  the  mist  — all  to  reinforce  the  might  of  the  targaryens.  he  thought  that  being  summoned  to  dragonstone  because  one  of  their  own  had  died  a  mortal  death  was  a  chink  in  that  armour.  flesh  and  bone  all  met  their  end  in  the  same  way,  regardless  of  blood.  “  i  heard  he  died  of  gout,  princess.  those  are  the  whispers  traversing  the  seas.  ”  ben nods with solemnity, standing with hands clasped behind his back, a reverent and well - behaved stance fitting of a princess who threatened bodily harm in a manner so glib.

“   is   that   right   ?   ”   a   dry   chuckle   would   escape   the   princess’s   lips,   already   having   misgivings   about   the   lord’s   spoken   words.   aside   from   the   fact   that   the   ironborn   were   not   to   be   trusted   in   their   entirety,   a   previous   conversation   had   with   their   favored   greyjoy   heir   had   done   nothing   to   convince   her   that   they   had   not   been   behind   her   uncle’s   demise.   “   the   origin   of   those   whispers   —   pyke,   i   assume   ?   do   you   and   the   rest   of   your   men   often   take   the   word   of   the   greyjoys   as   fact   ?   ”   a   thought   that   hadn’t   been   at   all   surprising,   and   she   would   remain   vigilant   for   the   remainder   of   their   conversation   —   lord   blacktyde   had   not   been   a   name   she   would   have   assumed   responsible   for   such   an   elusive   ploy,   which   could   very   well   be   what   he   was   counting   on.

the   dragon’s   daughter   was   one   of   the   many   that   alyssa   had   not   cared   to   interact   with   so   intimately,   and   yet   there   she   stood,   in   the   very   place   that   one   could   not   fault   them   for   attempting   to   escape   the   commotion.   “   something   we   both   agree   on   ..   ”   she   would   mumble   beneath   her   breath.   alyssa   shouldn’t   have   been   anywhere   near   dragonstone,   not   during   such   a   tense   time   in   the   realm.   she   should’ve   been   in   winterfell,   preparing   for   what   would   inevitably   come   next   as   fingers   were   pointed   towards   her   family   and   those   closest   to   them.   “   i   think   i’d   rather   attempt   to   find   my   own   way,   your   grace.   i   would   not   want   to   find   myself   led   down   to   the   dragon   pit,   and   roasted   alive   where   i   stood.   ”

rhaenys  whishes  she  could  stay  in  the  sky  for  as  long  as  possible.  half  of  them  is  already  there  with  them,  a  beast  that  understands  her  better  than  she  does.  the  princess  knows  viserion  could  feel  all  that  they  are  struggling  with;  his  scales  with  tenser  beneath  their  touch,  golden  eyes  looking  back  at  them  as  if  asking  rhaenys  something  without  ever  talking.  viserion  knows  what  awaits  inside  of  rhaenys.  anger  and  grief  battle  for  first  place  inside  of  rhaenys'  chest  ━━  it  is  a  dance  of  dragons  of  their  own,  brought  forward  by  a  crime  that  shall  be  answered  with  the  words  of  their  house.  she  had  found  refuge  in  the  skies,  however,  with  the  only  company  being  a  beast  that  was  a  part  of  her  more  than  anyone  else.

the  moment  their  boots  touch  the  ground  at  the  dragonpit,  though,  it  all  comes  rushing  back:  the  memory  of  first  hearing  the  untimely  news,  the  idea  for  a  feast,  the  feeling  of  being  surrounded  by  vipers  that  infest  their  home.  rhaenys  wants  none  of  it  but  now  the  weight  of  their  new  responsibilities  keeps  them  grounded.  they  find  a  place  to  be  alone,  wanting  a  break  from  hearing  all  the  condolences  and  feigned  sadness  of  those  that  come  only  because  they  are  told  to.

and,  once  again,  the  gods  care  not  for  rhaenys'  wishes.  their  peace  is  disturbed  by  footsteps.
