he's not incorrect in his statement, even if it does seem a little pointed, but Jim is just going to run with the assumption that his first officer is simply parroting back something that he's heard someone else say ( PERHAPS SAID WITH THE INTENTION THAT IT WOULD OBVIOUSLY GET BACK TO JIM ).
no doubt it's BONES, if the man's temperament earlier in the day had been anything to go by. but how can Jim be faulted for something that is entirely not his fault at all? of course, the argument against that line of reasoning is that, given that he is the captain, all fault eventually falls to him in some way or another.
it's the burden he willingly took on and he wouldn't change a single thing.

he cuts himself off mid-sentence, taking a moment's pause in order to collect his thoughts and decide how he wants to proceed with this.
here he stands, having just been handed what can only be described as a biohazard on a plate, and Spock believes him to be grateful for it. he hasn't really made any moves to allow the Vulcan to think otherwise, because he's nothing if not polite in the face of receiving a gift, regardless of whether it's unwelcome or not. his mother would have a field day if she caught wind that her son was ignoring his well-learned manners. no, there's only one way that this can go, and he knows it.
so, it's with the most genuine smile that he can muster, that he continues to speak.
‘ thanks, Spock. i needed this. ’
