pale fingers tug and pull on dark gloves, he never liked late winter or early spring since he never knew how to dress. on one hand, he wanted to dress a bit lighter than normal due to it finally warming up a bit, on the other hand, it being sinnoh and all, he always had to be careful in case the weather decided to have another four-five month long winter.
they always made him sick. it wasn’t as though he didn’t get sick any time during winter, he very much did, and preferred the company of his warm kotatsu inside his cozy little home, however it didn’t mean he had to hermit and hibernate all winter, as much as he’d enjoy to do so. he’s positive the few friends he had would murder him for that, and he can’t have that happening, now can he?
so here he is, begrudgingly walking around iron island with both hands as far into his overcoat’s pockets as he can put them, and breathing into his scarf, hoping to get some form of warmth from both of these items.
pale blue eyes look up a little, up a rock formation that was easy enough to climb, when he hears a loud voice, spotting a young girl training a pair of pokémon he really cannot identify from this distance. her voice is painfully loud, and it hurts riley’s ears a little for someone to be that cheerful this early in the morning.
alas, it’s practically become his ‘job’ to take care of vistors to the island, so he moves closer to the group of rocks and stands at the bottom, arms crossed and hands tucked under his arms to warm himself up.
“you uh, got a lot of energy there for so early in the morning.” the sarcasm drips off his tone as he makes this remark, raising his voice so she can hear him clearly. “oh, and you better be careful up there. there’s a skarmony nest nearby and since it’s early spring they’ve started swooping people.”
he adds this quickly, as to not have her make the assumption he’s just simply trying to be an asshole. in a way, he very much is trying to be an asshole, but it’s still probably a good idea for him to add some practical advice in there.
