hey gang

hi :3 im ben. im obsessed with a lot of things, but history, finland, and sápmi are 3 of them. (dont ask me why, i dont know why either. neurodivergence is funny.) so i'm combining at least the finland and history parts into one with this legacy.

since they're not going to have permanent last names for a while (probably a couple of centuries at LEAST lmao), for now i'm calling this my aurinko legacy :) (finnish for "sun")

DISCLAIMER 1: i am not finnish nor a historian (nor sámi if i end up including some of that in here), but i am doing as much research as is in english lol. if i mess up in ANY capacity PLEASE let me know (just be nice about it pls). i also dont speak finnish fyi, but i do have a finnish friend that i frequently confirm translations with, so if i get something wrong, blame him not me /j

Jussi, April 1367

As soon as Lisa was well enough to travel, we headed to the village for Isaak’s wedding. It was a lovely family reunion as we all gathered to celebrate… All but Helena, who we haven’t heard from in two years. Wherever she is, perhaps she wonders about us as much as we wonder about her.

In other news, Kerttu is warming up to the idea of marrying Isaak—at least, I think she is. I hope so. After the wedding festivities, it was time for the new babies to be baptised. Serafine was given her name, and Lisa and I had decided on Esteri for our fourth daughter. My wife had initially wanted Esther, but then decided to give it a little “Eastern flair”—and so Esteri she is.

Before we bade farewell to everyone and each other, Olavi sought out a wetnurse for little Serafine. Brynhilda, the daughter of Julian the foreign smith, had recently given birth, but both her baby and her husband had succumbed to illness, so Olavi and her father arranged for her to stay with my brother and his children and care for the little ones. Olavi has made a good deal of coin from his mead-brewing, so it didn’t take much for Brynhilda to agree.

At the end of our time together, Isaak and Kerttu departed for Hirvaskoski, resolved to start a fresh, new life together, promising to come home and visit as much as they could… I’m excited for my brother and cousin, I really am, but it will be strange having nearly all of my living siblings scattered across our region of the East, and before long, being the only one left.

From the Diary of Elisabet Didriksdotter, 4 April 1367

With what happened to my sister by Olavi, I feared even more for this birth than I normally do. So much death has crossed this family, especially in the birthing bed, and it shakes me to my core. I went into labor about two weeks ago, despite that—the child would not wait for me to find the courage to bear her. Yes, her—another girl! She will be christened when we travel to the village for Isaak’s wedding. To our relief, she, like the rest of our children, is healthy and robust. She seems likely to live, but I hope not to jinx it.

Saara, February 1367

Olavi rushed to our farm in the dead of winter, having left the children with his in-laws—yes, children, Aili gave birth once more, to yet another set of twins, another boy and a girl. Something had afflicted the boy’s brain—fluid, Olavi thought—and so he died shortly after birth, but the girl lives; yet not their mother. Aili slowly bled out over the course of a month, and there was little Olavi or her mother could do but ease her suffering, to make her comfortable. My son is beside himself. He commented that he is forever grateful that he isn’t the sole guardian of nine, as I was when his father died, but I reminded him that it doesn’t mean he is no less distressed and heartbroken. I wish there was more we could do, but he is inconsolable.

The girl, the one who survived, is to be christened Serafine. An odd name, I thought, but according to my son, Aili is the one who suggested it, before she died. A name from the Swedish-speakers to our southwest, where her family hails from. It is a pretty name for a wonderful granddaughter, though, so I have no complaints.

Jussi, November 1366

Winter is here, and Isaak finally came home for a couple of weeks. He had met his nieces and nephew before, of course, but they love having another person around to play with them. Isaak has nearly finished his apprenticeship with the foreign blacksmith Julian Elefsson, and is looking to wed once he finishes, and can start his own smithy in the village, or perhaps beyond. We have Elefsson and Uncle Edgard’s relatives who operate here, so Korpela is not exactly in need of another. He has talked about traveling to the neighboring village of Hirvaskoski to see if they are in any need of a blacksmith… where, coincidentally, the object of his romantic interest’s paternal family is from.

He talked about getting to know our distant cousin Kerttu a bit better while he has been staying in the village, expressing an interest in marrying her, so Mother and Hintsa invited Kerttu and her aunt, cousin Eva, to our farm to discuss the prospect further. Given that Kerttu was orphaned during the pestilence, Aunt Kirsti and Uncle Edgard raised her and cousin Eskeli—until they both passed, of course, and then Eva, who already lived with them and her children by cousin Juhani, took them under her wing. She hasn’t remarried, so she has been Kerttu’s main guardian. I must admit I eavesdropped a little on their conversation, and from the sounds of it, Kerttu isn’t terribly enthusiastic about the ordeal… but willing. She did at least add that she would be happy to go to Hirvaskoski with her potential husband, so that she would be able to perhaps track down the paternal family that may not even know she exists, as she never met any of them nor heard of them. They will be wed in the spring, giving Eva enough time to get a dowry together for her. Another wedding—another one of my siblings, all grown up, and leaving the nest for good. The only one that’s left is Anna. I can’t even imagine how Mother feels!

A letter coming from Oulu to Stockholm, September 1366

To my uncle Johan Magnusson and his wife Adelisa—

Our harvest looks to be much better than this year’s, or the year before’s! It seems our joint prayers have been answered! Spirits are higher around here, despite the amount of rain we’ve received—the crops needed it after this oddly dry summer. The children and the family are very well, too. Didrik has reached his first year, and as it happens, I’m with child again! The hunger we’ve experienced has still delayed my realization this time around, and my mother-in-law thinks I should give birth sometime in midwinter or after. I have realized, however, that bearing soon to be five children in seven years… It wears on a woman’s body, truly. It is difficult to say whether our next will be our last, but Jussi and I have jointly agreed that it is simply not worth the risk, and will try to wait to mitigate what potential harm it could cause.

Anyway, with Didrik turning one, he has begun to toddle around the place and make mischief with his big sisters, but he is not nearly as energetic and sporadic as Sanni and Botil are. He stays close to me much of the time, and is rather well-behaved for his age, although I suspect it won’t last. I enjoy it while it does, though!

I pray for good tidings and good harvests ahead, and to put this suffering behind us. And I will pray the same for you—or, rather, for more good fortune to come your way! Give Anders my love and care.

My fifty-fifth birthday has come and gone. All things considered… I consider myself a reasonably lucky woman. For the past seventeen years my days have been spent with my wonderful husband, and the past thirty-five with my children—makes me sound so old, doesn’t it? Even with how much my family and I have endured… As my dear, late sister Kirsti said on her deathbed, I have had a good life, and I have been glad to live it. I think of her and those words everyday.

Johanna, April 1366

Cousins Botil and Bengta have turned five, just over a month apart from each other. Jussi and I have been intentional about whenever one of us comes to visit (usually me and the girls going to him), having the two little ones spend extra time together, to form a bond and friendship, given their close age. So far, it’s worked. Botil is a charming and happy little thing, always smiling, but she always remembers to stay humble. I suppose it is a natural side effect, when she has parents and grandparents who love each other dearly. She has good examples. Bengta, meanwhile, is much more sociable and outgoing than her demure and timid older sister, with a playful side to her, but far from absentminded or ditzy. In fact, I daresay she might be smarter than I am.

Jussi, January 1366

Didrik is a few months old now—thin, but alive and healthy. I’ve observed Mother eyeing and watching me carefully as of late, and at first I ruminated over why, but I think I understand now. A similar pattern happened to my parents—two living daughters, then a living boy. I was that boy, after the death of my older brother and sister, who I never got a chance to meet. My father by blood fussed over me—he wanted all sons, and I even remember him exhibiting such behavior before his death, when I was just a boy. I don’t remember that much of him anymore, considering he died when I was only eight, but… Regardless, Mother fears me becoming another one of him, another Viktor Isaakinpoika.

Well, she has nothing to worry about! I am his spitting image—which does bother me, admittedly. I have his hooded eyes, his thin mouth, his chestnut-colored hair, his comparatively darker complexion. The only thing of Mother’s I have is her slender nose. Despite this, though… I am nothing like him. That is what I’ve strived for since I became a father. Whatever turned him the way he became will not happen to me. My children are my world, female or male. Such things are irrelevant when you’ve experienced as much loss as my family has.

From the Diary of Elisabet Didriksdotter, 28 September 1365

I went into labor on a cool night earlier this month, and after a long birth, bore a son! To our pleasant surprise, he is strong and healthy, if a bit less chubby than his big sisters were. He has been christened Didrik, for my father, taken to the Lord now twelve years ago. But the harvest failed once more, and I’m worried sick for us all this winter. Jussi and Hintsa have been spending more and more time in the woods, hunting for animals whose meat we can salt, and Anna has been foraging as much as she can, but there’s only so much any of us can do. The men need their strength to keep up trying to find food, so Saara has been sacrificing her own meals, so that I might be able to eat and thereby keep Didrik fed and healthy. It brings me such guilt, but I would rather her do it than not, for Didrik’s sake.

Jussi, June 1365

That girl— my sister, Helena, she seems to have taken a page out of Cousin Pietari’s book, and gone and eloped. Out of nowhere, too! She (allegedly) didn’t even tell Anna, her closest confidante. She’s exceptionally good at hiding things, that much has been made apparent. She got a vicar to send a note to us. Only Lisa is literate, so when she read it to us… Suffice it to say, it was a shock. Helena has been seeing a quite prominent and well-off reindeer herder from the far north—how they met, I have no clue—and she’s run off with him after getting married. Mother in particular is beside herself, but there’s nothing that can be done. They’re already wed. I just hope she’s happy, and she doesn’t come to regret her rashness.

A letter coming from Oulu to Stockholm, April 1365

To my dear uncle Johan and aunt Adelisa—

It has been a hungry winter and hungry spring, with no sign of relenting. That is mainly because we have been rationing what supplies we have, though, in an effort to safeguard our lives if this famine should continue into the next harvest. And what I’m about to announce next would be joyous, if not for these circumstances… But I am with child again. My mother-in-law thinks I am about four months along—quite late to discover it!—but I simply attributed my symptoms and lack of bleeding to hunger, nothing more. Jussi and I want to be happy, but we cannot help but let our worry triumph.

I do want to thank you, Uncle, for offering to pay for my passage back to Stockholm, but I don’t think it will be necessary. The wild East is where my family is, where I’ve chosen to build my life, and I don’t plan to change that course of action. But, of course, I’m not the same hardheaded girl you knew me as. Time has tempered me, at least somewhat. I will take you up on that offer if things become catastrophic, but I don’t foresee it.

But enough about that! What lovely stories you tell about little Anders. I am just so glad to hear about his wellbeing! Botil and Sanni have been well, too, as much as they can be. Of course they complain and whine about their lack of dinner—we prioritize breakfast and the midday meal, for that’s the best way to keep one’s energy up during the day’s tasks—but beyond that, they are doing just fine. I have noticed I seem to give birth on a roughly eighteen-month cycle, so I hope to give them a new sibling before the snow, one that lives, unlike the daughter we lost last year. I will keep you updated!
