the problem with visual platforms like instagram and tiktok (or ones that limit the amount of words you can use like twitter) is that they are inhospitable to complex discussions of themes and narrative. which is why booktok/booktwt are both so stupid. they incentivise u to aestheticise reading to the point where even your personal annotations are more for the benefit of an unseen audience than for yourself. fuck understanding or interrogating the book that youre reading. what u need is likes and retweets. don't buy a book that will make your bookshelf ugly. don't crack the spine, read it once, or read the ebook and keep the physical copy purely for display purposes. only read about hot people, young people, middle class english speaking westerners. only read about people who are exactly like you. you must never be pretentious you must never be overly serious you must never be ugly. etc. its all very miserable

i’ve been seeing a lot of things on tiktok defending taylor swift’s jet emissions and i just want to say something about it bc it kind of hurts a lot seeing so many people excuse her actions. i know it’s also been a few weeks since this has happened but i’m gonna say this anyways.

now i would consider myself a swiftie. i love her music and i truly think she’s such a beautiful musician and her music makes me feel things, lots of beautiful, wonderful things. however, i think it’s okay to hold your faves / idols accountable. this isn’t the first thing taylor has done that’s gotten on my nerves lately (the whole where the crawdads sings, how she might be white feminist (truly not for me to dissect bc i'm white, but poc have spoken about it and it seems like a discussion to be had, etc). i was just so disappointed to see how much she’s contributed to pollution through using her private jet. who needs to fly that much? and even if it was loaned out regularly…she didn’t have to do that? you have to at some point notice that your jet is being used so often, right?

i mean, part of its being filthy rich and not even having to second guess about your carbon footprint bc who cares right? it’s not like you’ll really face the consequences of climate change bc of resources, etc., etc. but like? come on. its ridiculous that these rich people, these celebrities, preach environmental change yet continue to be the #1 polluters. yes, this includes your faves!! it’s just ridiculous that they have the resources, the money, the time, to invest in sustainable practices and yet they don’t… they actively choose not to. wealthy people have always, always polluted more and harmed the environment more than the impoverished. always!!!! and they’ll probably continue to do that until the Earth dies.

it just sucks seeing someone you look up to, someone you admire, do such a thing because it just reminds you that they are still rich celebrities and they’ll do rich celebrity things.

anyways i kind of went on a tangent here but let’s please hold taylor accountable for what she did. she even disabled her comments after the whole thing came to light like? just admit to your mistakes and make and effort to do better! if my broke uni student self can reduce my carbon footprint, a rich celebrity can do it too 🫶🏻
