Dear teenage Emily:

I convinced you that you were ugly. I convinced you that your curves were symptoms of obesity, and that being over weight was the worst thing you could be. I convinced you no one would ever love you. I convinced you to stop eating. I hated you so much that i’ve now blocked 80% per cent of the positive memories you had at this time in your life. i made you ignore your artistic talent, creativity, kindness and sense of humour, and made you fixate on your physical appearance, something neither of us have ever quite been able to get right. i was so sure thinness would solve all my problems, even when it meant i couldn’t stand up during improv or musical rehearsal. i was so convinced of your ugliness that i rejected people who could have been great partners, in favour of people who gave obvious attention, good or bad. 

i’m really sorry i focussed so hard on how you looked. I wish i’d taken a few minutes to sit down and think about who you were, and who you would become. its hard to say whether, if you met me now, you’d be proud of what i’ve accomplished, or disgusted by how i look. i like to think we’ve come a long way, but i’m sorry to tell you that i still have days where i don’t look at myself in the mirror, and that i’m sometimes apprehensive to accept affection, even when it comes from the purest source. But i’m working on it. i just want you to know i don’t blame you for anything. You were doing the best you could with the resources you had. I’m determined to show you that things do get better.
