I know I’ve been harping on and on about the importance of this film on stage at the #626NightMarket as well as diversity events and my personal life, and I don’t want to write a full novel anymore, but I’ll just say that it’s been 25 years since Joy Luck Club made its theatrical debut. It was the last significant time a full Asian and Asian-American cast starred in an American studio film, theatrically released, based off of regular, human characters from an Asian-authored novel, that invited audiences from other cultures into the fold to glimpse our POV. So many friends from our tight-knit Asian-American entertainment community worked on the film, and this watershed moment is also like seeing the culmination of your family’s efforts over many years coming to fruition. I’m seeing the film again tonight, and just hoping we can really look back at this as a defining stepping stone moment when a film like this began to be just as normal as any other. Go check out the film when you can, because most importantly, it’s just good. #CrazyRichAsians #film @misscatherinelynn @katiegraves_ @yellokitty @erickvrce (at 626 Night Market)
