I don't say this as a criticism at all, (I like the season so far.) It's a neutral observation. Idk if anyone else feels this way.

Yk, louis being the unreliable narrator was always discussed as such a big deal in the 1st 2 seasons, like, you have to take everything with a grain of salt, etc etc. But, i find myself even more untethered from reality in s3. Maybe it's because we had actual in-real-time scenes with the characters in dubai to shepherd us to the past, with quite a bit of scenes happening in the present, as we see them. Sitting with irl Louis, Armand, and Daniel in dubai was grounding for us.

But in s3, i have to remind myself often that absolutely everything we have seen so far (maybe except the auction scene) is lestat's memory/ narration. And he has tweaked it any way he liked. We don't actually have the present-day him in front of us in the flesh. We haven't once seen lestat in real time so far, at least not in his own body. There is no lestat to introduce us to the story, and no lestat to check in with after chunks of the story have been told. We are thrown at the deep end of the story right at the start and almost everyone is floundering slightly, and I find that narrative choice fascinating.

It is. And it is very much what TVL and QotD ARE, too.

The thing about it that people do not grasp yet (generally, not directed at you directly here) is though that throughout the chronicles Lestat is the main narrator. Like, of most of the books and certainly those Rolin chose to adapt he is and will be the one telling the story.

And the other vampires do not contradict Lestat. In fact they give him their accounts so he can put them down to paper (in the books, vinyl here apparently).

Like, I know that has not sunk in yet, how could it. It will be something that will only click into place in like… 2 seasons or something.

But it will.

Because other than s1 and s2, and no matter the bias … Lestat is, canonically, NOT an unreliable narrator.

Listen I understand why many people find Jon's paranoia thoughtless or even stupid. And I also get the people defending and justifying it (me included I'm a full time Jon defender). But in all the discussions about Jon's behaviour everyone seems to forget that no matter how irrational his actions may have seemed at the time, in the end he was literally right. One of his coworkers WAS an imposter. Someone in his close environment DID kill Gertrude. The world WAS out to get him specifically. Calm and rational reasoning be damned my man was spot on

what I fucking love is how tvl was written in the 80s and lestat is constantly sayinf shit like “as the kids say 🤪 that’s so rad!!” or whatever, and to me, reader of the vampire lestat in this modern age, that does NOT register the way anne rice intended it.

like it is supposed to feel jarring and insane. it is supposed to feel like lestat has been violently submerged in modern young people trends and culture and is now repeating all the new words he learned like a beautiful fresh baby. but because the book is from 1985, all I think is oh interesting huh I didn’t know that slang term even originated in the 80s how vintage how retro how lestat wow he’s so embarrassing aw aw so cute.

but amc in all their incredible genius decided that honoring anne rice’s original vision of writing an extremely modern and weird book that fully embodied the era it was written in was more important then bringing back the 80s nostalgia thing that streaming services love and it’s incredible to me. now I get to listen to lestat say shit like “labubu FOMO cosplay reddit discord Gen Z more like gen SNOOZE 🤪🤪🤪 safe space pronouns donald trump labubu tiktok dance 🕺🏻” and suddenly I understand what it felt like to be a young anne rice reader in 1985. God…. I understand.
