I'm surprised I didn't say this in the original post but to specify: Roy Mustang grew up in a brothel, specifically he grew up adopted by a woman running a brothel where, specifically, all the women there are in the business of covert information reconnaissance by playing escort to important politicians.

Which. is an absolutely batshit primary character backstory to mention once, late in the series, and then immediately move on from.

And actually Hiromu Arakawa did it so well that every single fan interpretation of Roy Mustang for the FMA03 anime treated him as an honest to god man-slut. Bought his whole act hook line and sinker.

And you do, in fact, need to get further into the manga/Brotherhood to realize he is just acting like a slut because surely a true and honest hand-to-god slut like this guy wouldn't be overthrowing the government.

And it basically works out without a hitch

He has to cross a whole desert. He does it. He collapses of hunger in front of the one guy who'd take pity on him. The literal first people he finds in amestris to ask about the philosopher's stone are two of the only people in the whole of amestris who really properly know about it. They do not help him find one. He gets thrown in a prison, but almost immediately gets broken out by someone he doesn't know just because he strikes a deal with them. Turns out philosopher's stones can't just be eaten and are actually like. Sentient beings that possess bodies sort of. Would be bad news, except one just got executed and he happened to end up in front of the person making them who wants a new Stone Guy and goes "well, you happen to be perfectly suited to the Requisite Trait this stone is all about!" And literally Just Fucking Gives it to him. Normally the stone would kill his soul and take his body but no worries! This stone is the one single homunculus who ling can go "hey but like..... what if you didn't kill me, tho?" To and have them go "...yeah alright" and ling just sort of bullies him into friendship.

This is THE SINGLE WORST PLAN EVER but somehow ling just styles it out as if every result he gets here is exactly what he expected. Every time reality, quite rightly, tries to put a stop to things, coincidence, luck and serendipity always just turn up Ling.

congratulations everyone. we did it. with the power of teamwork, 63,000 of us came together to keep this girl and her dog from being separated. it was an arduous week with many ups and downs, but we stuck through to the end. it just goes to show that the best way to bring this website together is by the one (or two) scene(s) that traumatized us all as children. collectively, we managed to once again make the same fucking joke. i am so proud of you all.

Ed’s sudden growth spurt at the end was a sign that his connection to Al’s body was failing and Al was getting dragged back to the gate.

Like I knew this, but it just dawned on me that Ed getting taller in the last part of the series is not just a visual representation of his character growth and his maturing as things creep towards the finale, but it’s LITERALLY the most obvious sign that Al’s time in the armor is running out.

The context of why Ed is shorter than average and his connection with Al’s body and soul manages to make Ed getting taller - and finally getting taller than Winry, something he’s wanted for the whole series, something that should seem like a victory for him after all the teasing people have done - almost bittersweet. Maybe even ominous if you think too hard about it.

And maybe that’s why there’s never a moment where people point it out, why it’s never played for a joke, why there’s never a moment of victory for Ed when he realizes it. I’d always attributed the lack of reaction to Ed finally getting taller to the rising tension and the foreboding tone of the last part of the story. No one comments on Ed’s height, because things are THAT BAD. Ed doesn’t notice because he’s THAT WORRIED about the Promised Day.

But it’s not just that things are Serious with a capital S and most of the running gags have been abandoned at this point, it’s also that Ed getting SIGNIFICANTLY taller very quickly is a very bad sign for Al and the state of his soul.

The turning point is Ed’s injury in Baschool - either because nearly dying weakened the connection or because Ed used his own life force and tapping into his own soul/life messed with the connection, or because his body just needed all the energy and nutrients possible to survive, which meant less to give to Al’s body, is unclear, but Al lasted for 4/5 years in the amor with no problem, and then Ed almost dies, and suddenly Al starts getting dragged back to the gate and immediately afterwards Ed gains like a foot of height in like six months.

Did you think Ethnic Cleanser is some kind of special category of person that gets separated away from all the Good People at birth?
