au prompt: jack quits hockey after rehab but ends up at Samwell to get his degree and is so 110% in his studies that he ends up in a bitter library rivalry with the hockey team because they’re SO LOUD and take up the BEST TABLES and like only one or two of them actually seem to know who he is and the rest clearly just see him as Jack the Angry History Major. his junior year, they get this tiny new forward who brings him apology mini pies when the boys start acting up and jack thinks that maybe, just maybe, the hockey team isn’t SO bad.
This is amazing!
ok ok ok ok but what if he starts going to the games, sees bitty ball up after getting checked, and offers to help him? So the checking clinics happen, but Jack’s only motivation is to help, and he doesn’t do any of the canonical competitive assholery of Year One because the only goal is to help his adorable new friend who is fast and sweet and funny and the point is that Jack 75% Zimmermann makes a move after like two months instead of two years
10/10 no one recognized him as the prodigal Zimmermann son because before he enrolled in Samwell, he grew a monster Canadian lumberjack beard. Like, it’s so big he put googlie-eyes in it as his Halloween costume sophomore year (when the art kids from his intro to photography blow-off credit kind of glommed onto him). Bonus: this was when he became friends with Lardo, but she was always so busy with managering that 1) they didn’t get the chance to hang out nearly as often as they liked 2) hockey was absolutely 110% off the table as a topic. So imagine SMH’s reaction (months down the line) when they find out who Bits’ bae actually is.
How are the Lax Bros doing lately?
Eric Richard Bittle is Jewish
Tw: mentions of antisemitism
Ok, hear me out. I know there is a lot of evidence pointing to Bitty being a good Southern Christian Gay and like, that is completely plausible and if that’s your jam, great! But because I love projecting and rubbing my Jew-y hands on everything, here is a theory about Bitty being an extremely assimilatory southern Jew who only really gets in touch with his culture and Jewish identity once he gets to college in the North East.
So I did some research and while “phelps” (Bitty’s maternal family name) isn’t the dead ringer that “Birkholtz” or “Zimmermann” is, it still has a history of being a Jewish surname in the Anglo-Saxon region. So to me, Bitty is Jewish on his mom’s side, but his paternal family is very southern Christian and so, really that’s what he grew up with, because being Jewish in the south? Well… that’s a whole thing.
My mom grew up in Atlanta Georgia, and in her high school, she was the only Jewish person by a long shot. My grandfather taught at Emory and so they didn’t belong to a temple, and went to Hillel sometimes during the bug holidays, but for he most part she wasn’t involved in religious affairs because it wasn’t “normal”.
I think something along the same lines happened to Bitty. His Moomah always made Jewish food for their family, but only made Southern food for company. At Chanukah, they would put up a Christmas tree, but put a Jewish star as an ornament and call it a “Chanukah bush.”
Bitty had a friend in second grade named Timmy who came over for a play date one day, only to never come back because his mom saw their mezuzah on the front door and forbid them from hanging out again. “Timmy doesn’t need to be influenced by that kind”
After that, well, Bitty stops asking his mama to make kasha varnishkas for his lunch (someone once told him it looked like he was eating pasta with dirt in it) and he stops going to temple on rosh hashana, and he starts calling his Christmas tree a Christmas tree. When someone tells him he “doesn’t look Jewish” he knows it’s a compliment.
The Monday at school after the Closet Incident, there’s a swastika keyed into his locker.
Because it’s one thing being the gay kid in a small town, it’s a whole other thing to be gay AND Jewish. It’s like he’s had two strikes against him since he was born.
When he moves to Madison he begs his mom not to put up a mezuzah. He can’t understand why she starts crying, but she doesn’t put it up. It’s a fresh start.
The rest of middle school and high school, Bitty secularizes.
When one of his teammates in his coed team tells him he’s acting “like a Jew” when he asks her for money for the team shirts, Bitty bites his tongue so hard he draws blood.
When all the kids in his tenth grade English class throw pennies at Mr. Bloom during his lecture on Eli Wiesel, Bitty stays after and helps pick them up.
Fast forward to freshman year at Samwell, and Bitty is hanging around the haus just before Rosh Hashana.
Holster is talking to Ransom and Jack about putting something together for dinner, maybe picking up some matzo ball soup mix and some ruggies from a deli near by.
Bitty, who shuddered at the though of soup coming out of a box blurted out without thinking “you know, I could whip up some of my grandmas matzo ball soup? And maybe some kugel?”
All three of the other boys look at him with wide eyes.
“I didn’t know you were Jewish Bittle,” Jack quirked a brow in intrigue.
“Well,” Bitty said, face heating up, “I- I’m not JEWISH Jewish. My mom is Jewish. My Moomah is Jewish, but ME? I don’t know.”
Everyone else seemed perplexed by this statement, but Holster’s eyes lowered a bit.
Bitty took that to mean ‘I hate you why would you say that you should just leave’ and promptly scrambled out the door, a whirlwind of “sorry got to go’s”
Later that week, someone knocked on Bitty’s dorm door, and that someone was Adam Jacob Birkholtz, certified Nice Jewish Boy and hulking mass.
“Uh, can we talk?” Holster asked a bit sheepishly.
Bitty agreed and lead them into his room.
Holster sat on his tiny bed and asked, “what did you mean before? When you said your mom and grandma are Jewish but not you?” It was tentative, but Bitty could tell the question wasn’t an accusation.
“Well I mean, I don’t really celebrate anything anymore. For all intents and purposes my house was a secular house all throughout middle school and high school.”
“But bitty,” holster sighed, “just because your half Jewish doesn’t mean you can’t be Jewish. And even if you aren’t practicing that doesn’t mean you can’t be Jewish either. I had a friend in high school that was half Jewish and people at temple would make him feel unwelcome. You don’t have to worry about that here.”
“Oh um, thanks? But it’s not that. Look, I know I’m Jewish. People have been making that clear to me for my whole life.”
“What do you mean?” Holster asked.
Bitty then began to regale all of the things he’s experienced. All of the prejudice, the slurs, the pennies, the swastikas. All of the pain that came with being the Jew in the south.
Holster listened, “Bits, that’s really rough dude. And like, I get it, some things are too painful. But it’s not like that at Samwell. Sure there are assholes everywhere, and it’s not like there’s never any antisemitism but, if you haven’t noticed based on the hockey team already, you aren’t alone here! There’s a whole Jewish community that’s got your back.
“Listen, why don’t you come to Hillel with me for Rosh Hashana, we can make your Moomas soup together! And maybe even Jack will help and not complain. Just, I don’t want you to have to feel like that about yourself.”
Bitty begins to decline the invitation but then something stops him. He remembers being a little kid, dipping apple slices in honey and chasing his mama around the house with sticky fingers.
“Alright I’ll go.”
And he does. And he loves it.
He starts going to Hillel with Holster after that, and sometimes Jack tags along, sometimes so does Shitty. And in his Sophomore year, Nursey comes along with, and then his junior year comes Tango.
He makes matzo ball soup by the barrel, and re-learns the prayers for the Shabbat candles.
But it’s in his freshman year that he goes home for Winter break and pulls out the old Star of David ornament and puts it on the tree.
He asks his mom if he could help light the Chanukah candles and she looks shocked at first, but then she smiles and says “of course sweetheart.”
Later he hands her a present. It’s a long and thin box wrapped in silver paper with a little blue bow on top.
She takes it from his hand carefully, like its a shard of glass or something.
She opens it and It’s a silver mezuzah cover.
It’s a fresh start.
I’VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN
BITTY! HAS! PTSD!
lord now with this recent update and people will actually LISTEN TO ME EXPLAIN THIS unlike all the posts ive made about this before
Bitty has PTSD!
This is coming from someone who is diagnosed with PTSD and has suffered from it for the past 6-7 years! My PTSD is in relation to trauma from verbal and emotional bullying/abuse, and from what it looks like, Bitty’s is similar to mine except with less emotional abuse and more physical abuse. See here:
Basically? He was bullied. His trauma is in relation to bullying and negative physical contact, see here:
and SPEAKING OF nightmares, lets talk about his symptoms! We now have proof of recurring nightmares (as seen above), (mild?) panic attacks,
and aversion to things like rough housing, namely checking
(I’d like to argue here that he was suppressing an anxiety/panic attack)
Now you may be asking!! But Alex, he tweets about Holster and Ransom rough housing with him! He seems fine with it!
Let me tell you about something that happens when you have undiagnosed PTSD for an extended amount of years, something that I went though. I, like Bitty, experienced my trauma in 7th or 8th grade. I wasn’t properly diagnosed until my freshman year of college, so that was 5-6 years later.
You suppress your triggers. You learn to live with them and suppress them. Basically it’s either suppress them or you really fucking suffer. And hey, if we know anything about Bitty, it’s that he’s a champ at suppressing things (though he has gotten better with communication with Jack lately!).
I have a trigger of other people touching my neck. It used to be way worse, inducing panic attacks and leaving lasting arousal symptoms for a week after. (Click here for some info on PTSD symptoms including arousal symptoms!!) But because I just had to, you know, live with it for 5-6 years I just learned to suppress them. Someone touches my neck now? Yeah, I still jump a bit and have a panic response, but I’ve stopped going into full on panic attacks and instead suppress the feelings associated with it.
So basically? It’s HIGHLY possible Bitty has suppressed his triggers! Large boys picking him up? Probably have an immediate panic response and then the subsequent “no, it’s just holster and ransom. i trust them.” Jack doing the checking clinics with him was literally immersion therapy. That being said, even with immersion therapy, you know, the triggers are still there. You just have coping mechanisms. You’re numb to them. But, they’re still there.
There’s a reason Bitty is afraid of checking. And it’s because it triggers his trauma of being tackled in football.
Please protect my small gay southern son
ok… I’m actually gonna respond to this, but please don’t think this is a direct attack on you! I see a Lot of people doing this
Don’t pity Bitty. Don’t say he needs protection. Don’t act like he’s fragile.
I want to remind you that Bitty has had this mental illness the entire comic. From the first panel, Bitty has had PTSD. I also want to point out that he can obviously handle himself.
As a person with PTSD I can tell you, personally, that people pitying you because of your PTSD is really, really insulting. It feels like they’re reducing you down to your mental illness. Does it suck to have PTSD? God, yeah, but the last thing we want is pity. And pitying a character with PTSD is just another slap to the face.
PTSD isn’t some sadness porn where the person is constantly living in the past in their trauma and they’re miserable because they can never escape it. Can it be for some people? Absolutely! But for the most part it means that the person has restrictions. They can do certain things, hear certain things, see or be near certain people, be in certain places. Life with PTSD basically just means you live a life with restrictions that manifest in triggers.
I relate to Bitty a LOT with my PTSD because we got it in very similar ways. I will admit that I project onto him, but thats because so many things he experiences because of it are so similar. And because of that it’s really, really insulting to see people say “my poor baby” and “protect bitty!” because I live my life every day without needing protection or pity. I don’t want either. I just want respect of my restrictions (triggers) and to be treated as a normal goddamn person who is’t some fragile flower too good for this world too pure.
I’m a fully realized human being with a mental illness. Bitty is a fully realized character with a mental illness. Treat him how you would treat me.
I know this is the moment before Drama™ but I just want to appreciate what a LOOK this is! The black v-neck! The jean jacket! The cross body bag! The boyfriend cap (literally)!!! Jock but make it fashion, yes please!

Jack Zimmermann goes with his parents to the Met Gala and he wears a plain black suit
He meets Bitty after Bitty spends three hours complaining about his outfit on Twitter

“Bitty,” Ransom says. Bitty dodges his attempts to take away his phone, still typing furiously. “Dude. You gotta cool it.”
Bitty sends off the last tweet almost angrily, waving his hands at the TV. “Justin Oluransi I consider you to be, beside myself, the best dresser in SMH history—”
“I resent that,” Holster says mildly. Bitty pauses to shoot him a beautifully disdainful look that’s totally wasted on the fact that Holster’s preoccupied with wiping Cheeto-covered fingers on the couch. Another reason they should light the thing on fire.
