How Tokusatsu influencesed attack on Titan.
First off before I go into this if you are not familiar with war of the Gargantuas
The film is a sequel to the 1965 film Frankenstein Conquers the World and tells the story of two giant, hairy humanoid monsters that were spawned from the discarded cells of Frankenstein's monster from the previous film. A green one raised in the sea named Gaira (ガイラ, from kai, "sea") is violent and savage, while a brown one who resides in the Japanese Alps, named Sanda (サンダ, from san, "mountain") is friendly and docile. The film follows the investigation and military engagements of these creatures until their climactic confrontation in Tokyo.
The War of the Gargantuas was released in Japan on July 31, 1966 and was given a theatrical release in the United States on July 29, 1970 by Maron Films.
Now that you know about the movie let’s get into some ideas of inspiration
Attack On Titan is heavily influenced by the kaiju film genera obviously.
For example the Titan Shifters being very similar to ultraman as far as transformation goes
Or the theme of humans vs giant monster witch is hugely popular troph you see in Japanese kaiju films.
Now with some of that set aside let’s get into the Gargantuas.
My first thing is the design
Now what do you think of when you see this?
The beast Titan holds a lot of similarities to the Gargantuas,
Also not just looks play a role hear
If you remember, Zeke Yeager is Eren’s Brother and the Beast Titan
Now this is an interesting plot line I have noticed quite similar to Gargantuas.
Because in war of the Gargantuas the Gargantuas are Brothers, but the Orange Gargantua is a protector wile the green Gargantua is a destroyer.
I know we have not seen Titan Eren actually fight beast Titan yet , but this is quite an intresting parallel of Eren’s brother being the destroyer in this series and Eren being the protector type character.
Now to bring up the AoT live action films
The film was directed by Shinji Higuchi, who is a huge DaiKaiju fan. He also works for the studio TOHO. That makes all the classic daikaiju films such as Godzilla, Mothra, and War of the Gargantuas.
When he read the manga before making the film he noticed it was a lot like war of the Gargantuas, Even stating
“When I first read the series, [Attack on Titan] I thought, 'This is the War of the Gargantuas',”
Fans of the live action movies even theorize the film is an indirect sequel to War of the Gargantuas, due to the backstory scene in Attack on Titan part 2, where Shikishima explains the origins of the titans to Eren.
Anyway I hope you liked my post and at least take this into consideration.
As a huge fan of daikaiju films I couldn’t help but notice this interesting.
