Summary: One day, Bucky finds an injured wolf on his morning run. He can’t help but feel like his only choice is to rescue it.
Word Count: 5,050 - One Shot
Bucky had to stick to a routine. His anxiety, his depression…it would flare when he didn’t go through it. His psychiatrist told him to be weary. That soon the very thing that made him feel in control could one day be the thing that controlled him.
So, Bucky tried to keep it simple. Wake up at 5AM. Go for a run. Eat breakfast. Catch up on the world of today.
But his morning run wasn’t really running. It was a damn marathon. Sam tried to join him once and deeply regretted it. Steve didn’t bother joining, despite his physical capability to do so. He recognized it as a form of therapy for Bucky and didn’t want to interfere.
Bucky loved his morning runs. Sometimes he listened to music; other days he just wanted to listen to the world waking up. It made him feel more human. It also made him realize he was such a small part in the giant world around him.
He enjoyed running through the woods and around the lakes. His Brooklyn upbringing never let him experience nature like his life did now.

A/N: Thank you so so much for the request!! I had quite a bit of fun writing this one! I hope you enjoy it as well :)
This was meant to be an easy mission. Natasha, Clint, and Steve would watch the east entrance. Bucky, Wanda, and Tony would watch the west entrance. Your job was to get in, undetected, grab a USB filled with information about HYDRA’s next plans, and get out. It was that simple. And yet here you were, stuck as a cat, cowered in a corner, hoping and praying that one of the agents in the room didn’t see you. Your shapeshifting powers were highly useful, especially for stealth missions. But as most mutant powers go, sometimes they get out of your control, usually when your emotions become too much to handle. This was one of those cases. You hadn’t been able to find the USB in the room that Tony had instructed you to go in. It didn’t help that it seemed like there were twice as many HYDRA agents than what should’ve been there. They must’ve suspected SHIELD would ambush the facility. To put it simply, you were panicking.
It wasn’t all bad. Out of all the animals to get stuck as, a cat was one of the most handy. Although the room didn’t have many hiding spots, and you still needed to find that damn USB. You listened intently to the agents who were in the room, maybe they would mention where the drive was. But that was just hopeful thinking, wasn’t it? As they paced around the room, one of them spotted you, stopping dead in his tracks. “Hey, how’d you get in here, little guy?”, he walked towards you carefully, kneeling down to your level. ‘Oh my god, what do I do? There’s no way I can take them on like this. What the fuck do I do?’, your thoughts slammed around in your head, matching the pace of your heartbeat. The agent reached his hands out hesitantly, ready to scoop you up. Your instincts took over, as you hissed violently, before bolting towards the cracked door.
Running around the halls, you found yourself entering a different room, hoping it would have what you were looking for, or at least be empty. Luck wasn’t on your side today, though. Maybe you should’ve chosen to transform into an orange cat, and not a black one. As you entered the room, the six agents in there saw you almost immediately, having the same reaction as the last agent. ‘Oh god, oh fuck’, you wished Tony had made those tiny comms already, so you could at least have a chance of attempting to talk to your team in times of crisis. Just as two men came up on either side of you, there was the sound of pounding footsteps reverberating from down the hall. They all drew their guns, ready to kill whoever was approaching. You dashed out of the way, making sure you were as far away from the action as possible. Natasha and Steve were the first to enter the room, easily disarming and taking down the two agents closest to the door, before moving onto the other four, taking them down just as easily. Clint rushed in right after them, finding you crouched near the far wall. He stood in front of you, blocking you from any random attacks or from someone stepping on you. The rest of the team sprinted into the room soon after, relaxing a bit seeing that everyone was safe and mostly unharmed.
“Everyone alright?”, Steve asked, looking around at his team, worry lacing his face. “Yep, all good Captain”, Tony stated, his helmet opening up to show his face, “Heyo, (Y/n), didya find the USB?”. You started to try to use your powers to change back to human, you had calmed down a bit so it should work, right? But nothing seemed to happen. You looked up to Tony, eyes filled with panic. “Uhh, (Y/n)? You gonna change back or?”, Clint inquired. You could only let out a “mrow”, glancing to each of your teammates, hoping they’d pick up on what was happening. “Okay, okay, very funny. But seriously, we need you to change back so we can finish this mission”, Tony stated, raising an eyebrow at you. “Tony, I don’t think she can change back”, Wanda murmured, her eyes glowing red, making it obvious that she was reading your thoughts. “Wait, what?”, Natasha’s eyebrows furrowed, looking at Wanda as if she was insane. “What do you mean she can’t change back?”, Bucky added, looking at you with concern. “I’m not sure. But one thing’s for certain, her powers aren’t working right now”.
Everyone looked to each other, exchanging the same confused and undeniably worried glances. “So, what do we do then?”, Clint spoke up after a moment of silence. “Yeah, how do we bring (Y/n) back?”, Steve asked, nervously biting his lip. Wanda only shrugged. If she didn’t know how to change you back, then who the hell would? “Well, I guess we should start by getting her out of here. I don’t feel like hauling a cat corpse back to base”, Tony quipped, evoking a round of groans and scowls from everyone else. Bucky took a couple of steps over to you, leaning down with his left arm extended, letting you jump into his arms. He bent his arm, cradling you gently against his chest.
-
Steve followed Bucky through the building, making sure you got out safely, while the others stayed behind to find the USB. The three of you made it to the quinjet easily, Steve going to call Bruce, trying to see if he had any idea of how to get you back to normal. Bucky set you down on one of the seats, and he sat next to you, fidgeting with the seams of his pants, unsure of what to do. After around 10 minutes of sitting in silence, the rest of the team started to pile into the jet. “Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like the damn drive wasn’t even here”, Tony grunted, leaning against the back wall. Bucky let out a huff, his face matched everyone else’s, filled with defeat and tiredness. Steve had no luck with finding a solution with Bruce, this wasn’t really his area of expertise, “Maybe just wait it out? Her mutation should work again when she’s calm”. “But Bruce, she is calm, she’s literally fine. She’s just not human”. Clint flew the jet back to the compound, with everyone wallowing quietly in their own thoughts, you doing the same, as you wondered if you’d ever be human again.
-
Once the jet landed, you all got out, trudging into the tower one by one, Bucky opting to carry you in. As you entered the common room, you spotted Bruce, Sam, and Loki already there. Everyone moved to take a seat, still trying to figure out just how to get you back. “Oh, wow, you really weren’t joking. She’s a literal cat”, Sam whispered when Bucky walked around the couch, setting you down gently. Everyone had seen you shapeshift, but you never stayed as an animal for long, so this was quite the surprise. “Well, we can’t just wait for this to fix itself, who knows how long that’ll take?”, Natasha stated. Tony let out an exasperated sigh, slumping against the back of the couch. “Well, there is one option we can try”. “And what would that be?”, Steve was on his last nerve. As cute as you were as a cat, you were also small and vulnerable. He wanted you back as soon as humanly possible. “We could go to Strange”, Tony had his arms crossed, an objective look on his face, it didn’t take a genius to tell that he didn’t want to deal with Strange at the moment. Everyone thought about it for a moment. Quite frankly, you were all in. A wizard wouldn’t have been your first idea, but there weren’t many ideas to begin with. “That could work”, Natasha tilted her head, trying to sound optimistic. “But who in the world is gonna go with her?”, Sam asked, leaning against one of the far walls. “I’ll go”, Steve quipped eagerly. “So will I”, Wanda stated, she was the only one who could fully “talk” to you at the moment. “I guess I should go too”, Bruce murmured, standing awkwardly in the doorway. “Alright then, it’s settled. Let’s go and find Strange”, Steve said, quickly standing up, going to pick you up before you all headed down to the garage, finding the first car you could, before making your way to Greenwich Village.
-
Walking up to the old library, Steve knocked on the door impatiently. After a few seconds of no response, he reached for the door handle, finding it turned with ease. Stepping into the building, it didn’t take long to hear an agitated groan come from nearby. Strange suddenly appeared in the foyer through a portal, startling all of you. “What’s happening now? You do know I have a job to do”. “Yeah, and we’ve got this”, Steve sassed back, picking you up abruptly, shoving you towards Strange. His face contorted with confusion, as he motioned to you, “A cat? Are you serious-”. “Not just any cat, that’s (Y/n)”, Wanda interrupted him. “And we have no clue how to change her back”, Bruce added, fidgeting with the ends of his sleeves.
Strange took in a deep breath, the words just spewed at him sinking in. “Well, that certainly is a… problem”, was all he managed to say. “So, can you help her?”, Steve asked, having finally set you down. “I- well, I’m not sure. I can try a few spells, but I can’t guarantee that they’ll work”. You’d never seen Strange look so, overwhelmed. He disappeared into a portal for a moment, coming back with a book that looked older than both Steve and Bucky combined. After finding a certain page, he moved his hands, glowing yellow symbols being conjured around you. You felt a faint tingling, a sense of hope filling your chest. Although his magic dissipated and fizzed away soon after, leaving you just the same. He continued this a few more times, with a couple of different spells, but they all had the same effect.
“I’m sorry, but there’s really no other spells I know that might help”. “Shit”, Steve breathed out, combing a hand through his hair. “Well, thank you for trying anyways”, Bruce said sincerely. “Do you have any ideas that might help?”, Wanda asked, looking to Strange. “Not really, I’d say wait it out. She is a mutant, her powers should work again eventually”. Everyone sighed deeply, the anxious tension returning to the air. “Alright, I guess we should get going then, thank you again”, Steve said, trying not to lose his cool. He didn’t like not having a clear answer. You all headed back out towards the car, going back to the tower just the same as you’d left.
-
“So, what do we do now?”, Tony broke the silence that had filled the air yet again, looking around at his team. Nobody said a thing, everyone having the same stiff and anxious posture. After only a couple more moments of uncomfortable silence, a voice spoke up, “Oh my goodness, fine! Let me handle this”, it was Loki, out of all people. He sauntered over to you, his hands glowing for a few seconds, a strange sensation filling your mind and body as he worked his magic. It only took a moment before the feeling was gone, and was replaced with the sense that you were much bigger than before. Whatever he did, it had worked.
Everyone was quiet for a moment, taking in what had just happened. “You’re fucking kidding right? That’s all it took!?”, Tony flung his arms up, face furrowed with frustration. Loki only shrugged him off, flashing a cocky smile, “Ah, yes, you’re very welcome, by the way”. Steve huffed, a clear frustration washing over him too, “And just why didn’t you do that sooner?”. “You seemed like you were having quite a bit of fun. And (Y/n) just looked adorable as a cat, did she not?”. You felt your face grow hot with embarrassment and irritation. “Oh my god, do you know how hard it is to be stuck as a cat, Loki? You do know that if you want to see me as a cat that badly you can just ask me?”, you were beyond flustered, glaring holes through the man in front of you. “Oh, but that’s not as much fun”, he flashed you a mischievous smile. “Yeah, and I’m sure getting your ass beat will be just as fun”, Natasha sneered, stalking towards him, Tony, Wanda and Clint right behind her. But, of course, Loki wasn’t stupid enough to stay, having already ran away, leaving a clone behind for your teammates to chase. Steve ran a hand over his face, watching as the scene unfolded in front of him, too exhausted to try and stop it.
Your annoyance was short lived, finally taking a moment to appreciate the fact that you were finally back to normal. You made yourself a mental note to thank Loki later. “Glad to have you back, doll”, Bucky patted your shoulder softly, giving you a warm smile. “Yep, even if you were a cute cat”. “Ugh, goddammit Sam!”, both you and Steve griped, glaring at the birdman. “What? It’s true!”. Everyone left in the room groaned, shaking their heads. Standing up, you were suddenly knocked back down, your teammates still going on a mad goose hunt chase at top speed. “Uhh, so, how do you boys feel about trying that old timey restaurant a couple streets over?”. Steve, Sam, and Bucky all nodded their heads, as you four rushed out the door before all hell could break loose. You swore you’d never been happier to walk on two feet again, or to be human, cause damn was that food something you wouldn’t miss for anything. Even if it meant missing out on being stuck as a “cute cat”.

The subway seemed busier than usual for such a late hour, but then again this was the city that never sleeps. Thankfully, despite the amount of people on the platform there were still seats available on the train. You took a seat and folded up your cane, tucking it next to you before a New Yorker tripped over it since they never seemed to pay attention where they were walking.
A few shouts sounded down the end of your carriage and you tilted your head towards the sound, listening to the escalating argument, an attempted mugging. Footsteps ran towards you along with an echo of a cry to ‘stop that man’, and the panic of the voice had you rising to your feet. This city had taught you a great deal of lessons between its various alien attacks, terrorist attacks and a Snap, you had learned to protect yourself. You couldn’t wait on a hero to save the day.
You snapped your cane out, the elastic whipping it into shape as you spun and brought it down on the mugger's head. You had broken too many canes to count that you had commissioned a custom light weight alloy one to last a lifetime. Now it came in handy as the man cried out in pain and you ran the cane down his arm, hooping the ball into the strap off the bag he had stolen and snatching it from his grasp.
The click of a gun being cocked froze you. The sound was quieter than the raucous of the train and left you unable to pinpoint the exact direction the sound came from before you felt someone tear you away. You stumbled and fell but the person kept their hold on your tight as gunshots fired, the burst of sound leaving your ears ringing at how close they were and the pings of the bullets ricocheting off metal.
The arms disappeared for a second before you heard the crunch of metal being crushed, a man groaning and then the heavy thump of a body hitting the ground. A round of applause sounded out as the person who had pulled you away from the gun placed his hands on your arms, patting them down as they looked for any injuries.
“Are you alright?” His voice was warm and laced with concern, the baritone range vibrating your recovering eardrums as he leant in close to talk over the noise of the crowd. He froze under your touch as you gently traced his features, a straight nose, dimpled chin and frown lines etched in deep. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to picture your face.”
His head swivelled away and a quiet oh of understanding fell from his lips as he picked up the cane you had dropped in the mele. The owner of the bag was making her way closer and you recognised her voice from the fight so you tapped the man on the shoulder and pointed in her direction.
“Can you make sure the bag gets back to her? This is my stop.”
You pulled the cane away from the bag and slipped away before he could answer, the doors closing moments after you stepped onto the platform.
“Hey, wait!”
“Girl, your face is all over the news.”
You hadn’t even taken your jacket off when your coworker, and friend, Ana cried excitedly and took your bag, unpacking your lunch before hanging it up next to hers.
“They want to interview you, there’s even talks of a reward,” she continued as she sat back down at her desk. “That Sergeant Barnes is a dream.”
“The Avenger?” You asked as your interest was finally piqued. “What’s he got to do with it?”
“Duh, he was there. Girl, the man had his arms around you, how could you not know?” You quirked an eyebrow at her question and she scoffed. “Don’t give me that look, I meant he has a metal fucking arm.”
“He was wearing a jacket, I couldn’t tell. How did you know he had his arms around me?”
“Oh, they released the security footage from the train. Damn lucky he was there too, what the hell were you thinking?” You were well versed with the lecture that was coming your way, along with the light slap to your arm followed by, “Are you even listening to me? Seriously, you could have been killed if Bucky hadn’t stopped the bullets with his metal hand. He saved your life.”
“How about, if I ever see him I’ll say thank you.” You murmured as you rolled your eyes and began making your way to the door where the crescendo of barking was coming from.
“Ha ha.” Ana drawled sarcastically before the bell rang above the front door and a real laugh bubbled up. “Speak of the devil.”
“You have got to be kidding me.” You sighed, turning back to the reception as the scent of his cologne blew through, the same one you had inhaled the night before on the train.
“‘Fraid not.” He chuckled. “You took off so fast I didn’t get a chance to talk to you.”
“So you stalked me instead?” You challenged as a strangled groan came from Ana beside you.
“Forgive her, she’s always cranky if she doesn’t get her morning coffee and cuddles.” Ana poorly explained. “Do you want a coffee too? Pot’s almost done.”
“Uh, sure.” He said as you heard his leather jacket creak and he scratched the back of his neck nervously.
“If you want to talk you’ll have to come out the back.”
You left the choice up to him as you opened the door and stepped into the chaos that gave you purpose. There were currently 12 dogs in your care, dogs that no shelter would take and were set to be put down because they were put in the ‘too hard basket’ ie: they couldn’t justify the cost. Most were missing a limb, one had been rescued from a fire and two had been forced into fighting rings but all of them were sweet and protective.
“Just because we have a visitor doesn’t mean our manners go out the door.” You tutted as they all swarmed around your legs. “Line up.”
The mass of bodies disappeared and they settled into the line, falling silent while you felt the bags hanging on the wall for the one you were after. You took a seat on the doorstep, feeling Bucky sit beside you and you reached into the bag to grab the first collar, feeling the braille for the name.
“C’mere Charlie.”
The big, stocky bulldog boldered over and fell onto your lap, his belly facing up for a scratch that you happily gave him. You could feel his tongue hanging out of his mouth and warming your leg, a smile growing on your face at how happy and content he was compared to when he arrived. You gently felt around the stump where his back leg used to be, checking his reaction for signs of pain but he was relaxed and soaking up the attention he was receiving.
“What happened to him?” Bucky asked as he reached out and scratched the dog behind the ear.
“He was subjected to violence by vile human beings - he was thrown into the harbour after he lost a dog fight. Managed to swim his way back to shore thankfully.” You uttered quietly as if Charlie could understand you. “The vet was going to put him down because he was a damaged stray but the receptionist called us and Ana got there in time. They amputated his leg and told us that it was a waste of time, that he wouldn’t make it, but we brought him back here anyway. Isn’t that right, Charlie? We proved them all wrong.”
“Is that why you tried to stop that mugging last night? To prove you can?” He asked and you pursed your lips together as you turned to face him. “Sorry, I'm just trying to understand why you would put yourself in that position given you’re…”
“Blind? Disabled?” You offered as he tapered off to an awkward silence. “When you aren’t wearing your prosthesis does it stop you from trying to pick anything up?”
“No, but I have another arm.” He answered hesitantly.
“And I have other senses.” You explained as you grabbed a ball from the bag and threw it along the large enclosed space, the dogs running after it. “Most of them are missing a leg but they still run. Tango, c’mere girl.”
The smallest of the pack, a fox terrier, sprinted back and her small paws caught your top as she excitedly jumped on your lap having brought the ball back.
“I know what point you’re making but she won.” He said, scratching her back and letting her jump onto his lap with her four little legs.
“She always wins.” You smirked. “Do you think she would be brave enough to chase the ball if she could see who she was up against?”
A comfortable silence grew as Bucky sat petting Tango, the girl who lost her eyesight when she was beaten by a group of teenagers as a pup, and you finished roll call with the collars, getting them ready for their morning walk.
“Did you want to join us? If you don’t have any villains pencilled in your diary.” You asked after the bag was emptied and the dogs all sat quietly in their line, the swish of their tails giving away their excitement. “They get a bit angsty if they stay inside too long.”
“My diary is clear of villains today and rescuing princesses too before you ask.”
“Damn, that was my next question.” You laughed, standing up and grabbing the special leashes that had been made for walking so many dogs at once. “Here, you take Victor, Oscar, India, Romeo, Sierra and Charlie. They could do with being around dominant men a bit more, they need to see they can be trusted.”
“Dominant men.” Bucky chuckled. “I’ll take it as a compliment.”
Before you could retort a witty response Ana called out from the reception, a reminder that your coffee was waiting. You finished clipping each dog into the leash and felt up the rope to check for any frays or tears until you reached Bucky’s hand of cool metal.
“May I?”
“Sure.” He said with the creak of his jacket suggesting a casual shrug along with it. “At least you asked this time.”
The light tone brought a smile to your face and you gently traced the thin plates, feeling them move as languidly as real muscle. “I can’t hear them move.”
“It’s vibranium.” He said as if it explained everything. “Wakandan tech.”
“They must like you a lot to let you use it.” You commented as you followed the curve of the plates up his sleeve. “I didn’t think they took too kindly to outsiders.”
“I’m not in their favour at the moment, that's for sure.” He mumbled before clearing his throat. “Where do you normally walk these guys?”
“Down the road to the dog park. It helps get them used to being around unfamiliar dogs and new scents.” You explained, opening the door and leading the way to grab one of the takeaway coffee cups. “It’s one thing for them to be sociable amongst themselves because they live together and have shared trauma but it’s a whole new dynamic out in the real world.”
“I can understand that.” Bucky whispered to his coffee lip.
“I thought you might.” You said with a little nudge of your elbow. “It’s our survival instinct, but it’s often mistaken for being jaded.”
“Maybe it’s both.”
“You should think about that reward.” Bucky said as he walked beside you, fighting to keep his dogs from crossing over to yours as you headed back to the shelter.
“I think the city is better off keeping its reward and actually putting money into making public transport safer.”
“I completely agree, but the reward was offered by the woman who was attacked.” He corrected you before he pulled you to a stop. “Saving all these animals can’t come cheap, even just doing an interview will help your cause. You’re doing a good thing here and I know there would be plenty of support if more people knew about it.”
“I don’t need charity, Bucky.” You said after whistling for the dogs to stop pulling at the leash. “I’m doing just fine on my own.”
A low growl, that did not come from a dog, had your eyebrow lifting before his phone rang and he sighed. “I have to go. Will you be alright getting back from here? Was that a stupid question?”
“Kind of, but I’ll let you off the hook this time.” You nodded.
“Would it be okay if I maybe stopped by again tomorrow?”
You were acutely aware that his hand was still on your arm and the heat seemed to radiate far beyond just where he touched.
“I’d like that.” You smiled, reluctantly taking the leash from his other hand.
“I’ll bring the coffee though, don’t tell Ana but this tasted like dirt.”
“Your secret is safe with me.” You promised with a laugh as his phone rang again. “Now go.”
“It’s a date.” He said before inhaling sharply and clearing his throat. “I mean, if, um, if you want it to be.”
“Not really.” You admitted, placing your hand on his arm and trailing it down to find his hand. “I’d rather go on a proper date.”
“Yeah?” He said brightly, his fingers squeezing yours gently. “Do you like jazz? There’s a bar that plays like music on Saturday nights.”
“Sounds perfect.” You followed the sound of his breath and placed a soft kiss on the short beard you had felt the night before. “See you tomorrow.”

You take a deep breath and close your eyes. You hate elevators, but it’s only four more floors until you reach the ground floor so you can finally go home after working a double shift.
You tuck your hands into the pockets of your scrubs, only opening your eyes when the elevator stops before it reaches your floor. The doors slide open, and you think about getting off here and just taking the stairs when you see who steps onto the elevator.
“(Y/N),” he says as he nods his head once at you, trying to avoid eye contact at all costs.

If you could do an one-shot of Dean falling in love with a deaf girl, who lost her family; and he and Sam takes her in, despite the fact she’s like 20? Smut can happen?! I would love to see this happen, and thank you!!!
Chuck how he loved watching you. Just standing there, his weight resting on the doorframe and a smile on his lips as you sang something to yourself when you made dinner for them. He felt like a creep, maybe someone could call him that, but he was willing to take it. He just loved your voice, although you didn’t particularly liked doing so, but when you were alone he had gotten to know your little dirty secret.
Maybe you could listen to songs, not in the way he, Sam or most of the other people could, but you had your way of loving music. And he secretly (yes it was his own dirty secret) knew as to how. He had spent hours upon hours on youtube, watching ASL videos of songs and (guiltily again) had gotten to learn most of them.
Dean sighed like a teen girl gazing at her crush when they weren’t looking. He shook his head, taking a glance to make sure Sam wasn’t anywhere to be seen and he wouldn’t have to put up with his teasing and took a deep breath. He smiled as he walked closer towards you. He knew you hated being sneaked up at, not that you could really tell or not, but whenever it was either him or Sam it seemed that you had no problem. Plus, guilty Dean was but- he loved the small squeak that left your lips and the way you jumped when he placed a hand on your shoulder.
Just like now. He could already see the blush spreading on your cheeks as a scowl later set on your face. Sometimes only your facial expressions were enough for him, just like it seemed to be the same for you. The two of you could communicate in a way that was beyond words and sounds. It was something that shocked others and that not even Sam or Castiel could understand but it was there, and it only made you come closer.
