I started writing this piece but I lost momentum and got bored. It definitely gets less well written as you get further in but if you guys are interested I can turn it into a real piece 😝
So basically it’s Steve’s wedding day and for just a split second he sees Bucky looking back at him where Peggy should be
It was a once in a blue moon love that could be strong enough to alter timelines, but that’s exactly what Steve Rogers had with Peggy Carter. After losing her to time in his frozen sleep, there was nothing he cherished more than the lifetime he traveled back in time to spend with her, at least that’s what he thought.
On a winter evening in 1949, soldiers wore black and white suits instead of uniforms, Howard Stark wore his very best three piece suit (a custom pocket watch he engineered to match as well), but most important of all, Peggy traded her moss green blazer and Strategic Scientific Reserve pin, for a white dress and a gold ring.
The couple was engaged almost immediately after Steve’s return. They lived together in a quiet home in Washington, DC. After traveling time for her, Steve knew there was nothing he wanted more than to be Peggy’s husband. When it came time for the first dance though, it felt as if he was transported back in time again. Instead of his new wife looking back at him, he saw his best friend Bucky in drag.
The memory swallowed him whole before he even knew what was happening. During the war, troops would try to keep up morale and someone decided a drag show was the way. A handful of randomly selected men would get all dolled up and put on a show about once a month. There was one month though, that Bucky’s name was called. Of course the howling commandos wouldn’t stop their teasing, even before the show had started, but Steve was more curious than anything. Bucky hadn’t allowed him to watch the getting ready process, claiming he might as well keep it a surprise and really put on a show.
It was finally time, one man walked out from behind a curtain. Sporting a short blonde wig, a red white and blue corset with a matching skirt, and makeup that had to be done by one of the women in the strategy department. The man strolled around the stage, jokingly flirting with the men. He even sang a little song.
Mid laugh, Steve’s voice caught as Bucky walked out on the stage. Steve knew there was something about Bucky that made him feel differently than any of his other friends did but he couldn’t even fathom pinpointing the truth to what it really was. But in that moment, seeing Bucky clean shaven with a red lip, long brown hair nearly an identical shade to his own, Steve couldn’t help but feel pins pricking at his heart.
