All the voices became louder and more abrasive. As much as Averie tried to block the echoes out, nothing seemed to work, as the noises became ear-piercing.
"Your fault!"

"YOUR FAULT!"
The orange grumpus curled up as they placed both paws over their ear holes. "Stop...please stop..." they whimpered in hopes the voices would stop, but to no avail. They got reminded every single time of their actions two years ago. It was their fault their sister died and it will be their fault if future grumpuses travel to Snaktooth Island after reading the article.
"I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." they repeatedly snivelled as tears ran down their face. Now the sound of the echoes were shattering. "Please stop...I'm sorry..."
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHH!"

"Are you really alright?" they suddenly were thrown out processing their thoughts by the concerned tone of the cyan grumpus. "You…don't have to talk to about it if you don't want to." Turquoise eyes observed the grumpus next to them as he scratched the back of his head with the arm that was not resting on their shoulders. "I…just want you to know that…you are my friend and if there is anything I can help you with…let me know…"

Chapter 2 of Mending a shattered heart
Two illustrations for one chapter?
That's right. That is because it was originally two chapters. But since it was short, and the third chapter fit with the second, I decided to combine both into one.
They quickly noticed a piece of paper attempting to glide with the wind. The orange grumpus caught it quickly, taking a good look on the photograph. "I wonder how you are doing..." they murmured as they sat down again. Their heart sank by the sight of the photograph. A grown brown grumpus with two grumplings stood proudly in front of a fence. The children themselves looked almost identical, if it weren't for their different eye colours, slightly differing markings and the pendants on their necklaces.
"Dad...Morrigen..." Averie pressed the photograph close to their chest as they looked up to the sky. Their turquoise eyes clouded as grief overcame the journalist.

Illustration of a fanfic I'm currently uploading. It's an older story that I decided to edit and upload on AO3.
It's called "Mending a shattered heart" and can be found under the author name "Blizzardsong96".
It's me again. Other fandom still has me in its grasp. I would love to draw my grumpuses more. In the meantime, I'll try and continue posting stuff from other art site I'm there to here.
Story is, as usual, under the cut. Disclaimer that the upcoming stories are a bit older and not beta read. I look to edit them.
Today it was heavily clouded and most grumpuses from Snaxburg would stay inside their huts. Not that it makes a difference for a spirit like Morrigen. For several months her sibling Averie was staying on the island and received a crucial note to solve Lizbert's disappearance. Morrigen couldn't help but feeling proud of her twin. However, she could still feel the pain that they go through after her death, and it was only a matter of time until all the bottled up emotions would break out.
The spirit sighed as she was still disappointed to not find a way to communicate with them. The so called shaman...-Shelda was her name...- turned out not to be a spiritual as she admitted to, which frustrated the orange spirit even more. No, not a chance. The townspeople would have to solve their personal matters on their own. But at least there was a light of hope.
Making her way to Simmering Springs Morrigen discovered another spirit. Someone she had grown close over the past months. Reddish-brown colour, thick neck fur and horns were the characteristics to recognize her new friend. The orange spirit made her way to the primal and silently sits down next to him.
"Hey Askar." she greeted him. As usual goop was dripping constantly from the spirit's eyes and mouth. Small pink specks looked to the female grumpus and a small smile showed on Askar's face. "Morri...good to see you..." His eyes went back to the ocean, as if just got out of deep thoughts.
"I must say...your twin has a lot of determination." he rumbled. "Not giving up...willing to help the people from their predicament...maybe you are right and...this time all of them escape from this forsaken place."
A not uncomfortable silence befell the two spirits as they stared to the ocean. After some time passed, Morrigen felt a paw on her shoulder, glancing to the reddish-brown grumpus.
"I guess you want to know my story...right?" Askar glanced over to Morrigen. Now that he mentioned that, Morrigen remembered to tell him her story and how the circumstances have brought her to this island. But the time she got to spent with the primal grumpus she realized she didn't know much about him. Only that he lived in a time where grumpuses used to have horns. The orange spirit nodded after a while, remaining quiet as she listened to the primal.
"I used to be the chief of my tribe." Askar started and reminisced about the past. "Had a mate...was going to have a child. Big herds roamed the wide fields of the tundra. However...one day herds became scarce and we had to wander far distances." Morrigen processed what he said before, confirming the hunch that Askar was, indeed, from primeval times.
"There was this long ice area and we crossed it...and then arrived on this island." he continued, his head then following an invisible trail from he ocean to the sands. "We have wondered why there were no herds...until one of my hunters came across meat...that moved...but then held still." A small smile crossed the primal's face. "My tribe got enough food, saved from starvation. And soon my tribe was bestowed with a healthy son."
Morrigen listened intently how good things happened for the tribe at first, and a bit about Askar's son. This was until an unexpected turn of events caused everything to go downhill. How Askar witnessed the first of his tribemates to lose their life and turn into these critters. Then followed by another one. One by one, until only very few of them got left.
"One day the creatures went into a frenzy and...forced themselves on the rest of my tribemates." Askar huffed, gritting his teeth. "I had only one thing in mind; saving my son! I grabbed him, placed him in a crib...and letting him float into the ocean." Morrigen followed Askar's gaze as he looked out to the ocean, grief was showing on his face. "It was either taking the risk...or him ending up like the rest of my tribe." The reddish-brown grumpus gulped. "I already felt weak...with the critters starting to take over my body...but I wasn't willing to hand them over my son. Thus...a long battle ensued. One by one I ate them, hit them...squished them..."
Morrigen shuddered, expecting of what is going to follow next. "In the far horizon...a boat...small boat...and my son's crib. That...that was the last thing I was able to see before I...succumbed to the Bugsnax...and became this."
Askar allowed Morrigen to let the story sink through her mind. She couldn't help but feel...pity for the primal spirit. Having to witness several cultures to rise and fall on Snaktooth Island, always getting reminded what those critters were capable of. The orange spirit decided to slide a bit closer to the primal grumpus and leaning into him, offering some comfort. Askar accepted the gesture and in return leaned gently against the smaller spirit.
"You're not alone anymore, Askar." she whispered to the reddish-grown grumpus. "I...I will help you find a way to...join the Beyond...that's what...friends do after all..."
Askar twitched slightly, but then sighed, gently rubbing the head fur of Morrigen. "I...guess you are right...with the friends part..."
As spirits they were alone, not able to communicate with the living.
I apologize again for my absence. Different fandom has me on it's grip. I did not forgot the grumpuses though, so I continue posting some of my art here.
This one is Chandlo after the Mama Mewon fight. Got some bruises and (in my Verse) got a chipped fang.
As a quick reminder, sashes have the base colour of the USHGE (Check the sheets if you're not sure), then have a trim/pattern of the colour which matches the jobs/roles your Unionyte or Grumpsnak would have! You could even have more than one and not belonging to the same USHGE, but maybe make sure to have the colours of the USHGEs they're involved with.

Continuation of the story I've posted a few days ago.
I'm on a different site, where I've posted grumpus art before. There I kinda told the story backwards. I think, why not telling the story more forward?
Like the last post, the story for the picture is underneath the cut. Will also link the previous part to find it more easily.
Also yes, Clumby is the daughter of Alren and Liadne in this universe. I might explain more in time. But for now, storytime!
PREVIOUS
It was only the beginning point...but it was also a huge step for Dextur to improve his current situation. It was decided that the twins still stay with their grandparents for now, but he would come over more frequently to spend time with Averie and Morrigen. It was to ensure that slowly, but surely a bond can be formed and until Dextur cleaned up his house.
One night he decided to spend the night in his in-law's house, as he brought sleeping bags with him. Averie and Morrigen insisted to sleep in one too, thus a blue and green sleeping bag was brought. Morrigen snored soundly, Averie was on their back, and Dextur...couldn't close his eye at all. Voices in the garden woke him up. The brown grumpus rubbed over his scar, then snuck closer to the spot where he heard the voices.
Alren and Liadne sat outside on the porch and looked up to the stars. Dextur leaned against a wall when he listened to the conversation of the couple.
"I'm just so glad Dextur and the twins get along." Liadne sounded relieved and cheery, which warmed Dextur's heart. However, this soon faltered when her body shivered.
"It's great Dextur, Averie and Morrigen are bonding." the orange-brown grumpus responded to his wife and paused a short moment. "You have been a wonderful grandmother to the twins, and I'm sure they will appreciate it..."
"They...they needed a...mother figure...now that Willa..." Liadne put a paw over her mouth. Alren understood by his wife's reaction of what she was thinking, and he placed both paws on her shoulders. "It's...okay, sweetie." he kissed the dark red grumpus on her cheek. "You've been strong for four years straight. You kept in your grief." Another pause, before he offered her to lean into him. "You don't have to hide it anymore. It's...it's your turn to cry."
Not a second later and Liadne bursted into tears. She allowed herself to be vulnerable, leaning into Alren's comforting hug as she allowed herself to mourn for the loss of her daughter.
Behind the middle-aged couple was the frame of a photo. By a closer look there are two grumplings playing together.
Dextur, now standing near the door and discovering the photography, recognized the grumplings in this picture.
His wife Willa as a grumpling...and Cicillia, her older sister.
The same sister who disappeared years before the birth of the twins.
I've been figuring out what to post first, and since I'd like to establish my characters first, I may as well post some backstory pieces for my journalist OC, Averie.
Just a heads up: I don't have a beta reader. I'll make sure to read over the stories and check for grammar. Please feel free to tell me if you discover any grammatical errors.
For the following story I shall provide an explanation for some words.
Beeper: Baby grumpus, until the age of 3 years. Used because they squeak, sounding like a 'beep' when they need something from their parents.
Grumpling: Child grumpus. Used until they reach puberty, then they're refered as grumpuses.
The story for this picture will appear under the cut:
"I don't know what to do, Al." A tired, dark red grumpus held an orange beeper in her arms as she craddled the little bundle of fur. "It's been three weeks since...Willa..." Liadne choked back the tears, intending to stay strong for her twin grandchildren. Alren placed one paw on the shoulder of his wife, while he held a chuckling Morrigen in his other arm.
"We'll go through this together, sweetie." the orange-brown grump tried to reassure his wife. "We're going to be there for the twins. Averie...and Morrigen will be fine under our care." With a regretful look to a portrait of Willa and Dextur, the middle-aged grumpus sighed, craddling his granddaughter.
"And when that stubborn log decides to take care of his children, then we will be there for him."
"Y-Yeah..." Liadne nodded as she gently stroked over Averie's fur. "Boy needs some time...but I'm sure, deep down, he does care for his beepers."

Four years and Dextur was standing in a field of yellow flowers. It was an excursion, supposed to be a nice day. The brown grumpus expected Liadne and Alren to tag along during the field trip, but for some reason both haven't bothered to let him know that he would go with the twins on his own. And here he was, standing in the field and reflecting his past life choices.
These twins are his children. The same grumplings he has left the moment they were born. Long ago he blamed both for the death of his wife. Four years passed quickly when he got to attend one competition after another, without taking long breaks. Ice skating was the only thing that somewhat helped distracting him from the pain.
However, a year ago a freak accident has ended his career. With his damaged leg and only one eye left, he was unable to ice skate. During rehabilitation he realized how much he began to take some aspects of his life for granted.
As much as it pains him having to life without his beloved Willa...she's not fully gone. The family she wished to have was still here.
And me, grumping idiot, is going to go the same route like my grumping sire!

A loud THUMP brought him the attention of one of the grumplings stumbling to the ground, and the breaking of a toy. Dextur immediately rushes to the side of the orange grumpling, as they held a paw over the bruise of their knee. "Averie! Are you hurt?" he called out and kneeled to them to have a better look on their wound.
Averie was choking back tears as they glanced up to the brown grumpus. Meanwhile their twin sister Morrigen joined the two, gently placing a paw on their shoulder. Deep down Dextur was delighted to see how close the twins are.
"I'm...fi...-NO, MY FIGURINE!" Averie cried out as they pointed to their broken toy, a bird figurine, with a devastated expression. Dextur got a hold on the figuring, now being broken in several pieces, and shaking his head. "Sorry. Unfortunately...there is no way to repair it." He put the broken pieces aside, not wanting others to accidentally step on it. He put on a smile as he returned to the twins. "I-It's alright, it happens. I can always buy you a new toy."
But Averie was not reassured. Their bottom lip wobbled, and not even their sister seemed to find the right words to calm her sibling down.
"But...but it was the one you chose and gave me." They sniffled. "First thing from dad."
Dextur's healthy eye widened by the statement. Did...did Averie just call me...
It broke his heart seeing the grumpling like this. Yes, it may be a toy, but for Averie, it was the first thing that came from their parent. Their dad. Him.
The brown grumpus remained silent, as he looked to the yellow flowers. He liked those plants...and so did Willa. He and her visited the fields every summer. This place had something...magical to it, which is probably why Liadne and Alren wanted to have the trip there.
Morrigen seemed unsure what to do, but she too showed signs of distress. Time to try and defuse the situation.
"Did you two...enjoy the trip?" he then asked to try and change the topic. "Did you...liked going to the fields?"
To his relief the twins brightened up by the question and nodded enthusiastically. "Yup!" At least that, a good trip. It warmed his heart that the grumplings had a great day. Maybe it could've been more fun with their grandparents, but at least it was enough.
For four years he stayed out of his children's life while he was simply floating around, doing competitions, drinking and turning his back on everyone, including his best friends. Today however he felt...alive...and...even close to being happy.
Dextur glanced to the twin siblings, showing hints of regret as he spoke. "I've been a terrible father to both of you for many years. But...but I'll do my best for you from now on...so..." He winced. "Is it...is it alright if I stay with you? Is it alright to be...part of your life?"
To his surprise Morrigen and Averie approached the brown grumpus and reached out to his paw. He held it towards them, so both could hold on it. "Yes, dad. Please stay with us." A small smile formed on the twins, where Dextur returned the gesture. However, soon Averie's face scrunched up again, and their lower lip trembled once more.
"D-Dad?" Again it nearly broke Dextur's heart seeing Averie being so upset. He glanced to the orange grumpling and nodded to show they got his attention. "I...I'm feeling sad. I lost something important today...and...is it...is it okay not to hold it in anymore?"
Dextur noticed that Morrigen seemed to be upset, having to witness how sad Averie got. Meanwhile their eyes squinted, still trying to hold it back in, but their whole body began trembling.
"Nana..." Averie tried to form a coherent sentence, but was interrupted by a series of sniffling. "Nana...told us there are a few places where we can cry. Either in the bathroom...wherever her or Aki are...or..." They mumbled, looking up to Dextur with teary eyes. "...or in daddy's arms!"
The brown grumpus gasped, hearing the first sobs from Averie. Without hesitating anymore...he scooped both grumplings into a hug. There Averie bursted into tears, followed by their sister Morrigen.
"I'm sorry." Dextur muttered, loud enough for his grumplings to hear it. "I'm...I'm so sorry..." Feeling tears down from his left eye, he held the twin grumplings close, not letting them go for even a minute as he tried to comfort them. Instinctively he bellowed in a deep, calming tone, like...a parent grumpus does to soothe their grumpling.
"I...won't...leave you...again..." he rumbled in-between, allowing the grumplings to sob loudly into his fur. No, he will not leave them a second time, for he swore to be the father Morrigen and Averie needed in the first place. "I...I promise...I'll be with you, never leaving you again."
He was a lonely grumpus after the death of his wife. Today however, he realized that he wasn't alone. Unlike the times before, he will not cut out the grumpuses important to him again.
After Morrigen and Averie calmed down, they took a walk through the fields together with Dextur. Averie was holding his left paw, Morrigen his right paw. Looking to them, it filled him with pride for the first time for having such wonderful grumplings.
Willa...I finally found someone...someone important to me...someone to love and protect.
