A birthday gift for my pal KoopaKungFu

I have been laughing at the KoopaKungFu highlights for days. XD

These were two little animations I made for the KoopaKungFu channel (yay!). I used the Yiynova MSP19U tablet so I wanted to see how they would handle on both programs since this was kinda my first time. This is sort of a review for animators that are curious about the Yiynova…

Flash MX (two guys fooling around)

Flash programs have this weird setting where every time you make brush stroke, it tries to “corrects” you. However, when I tested it on Adobe Flash (smooth setting 30) and Flash MX, the strokes were actually really decent. It still changed but only slightly. The pressure sensitivity in the Yiynova is so great (as tested in Manga Studio) that it can even handle Flash. Who knew!? I didn’t even have to zoom in to clean up my animation. However, I did run into some problems when making lighter brush strokes. For some reason it jitters. I think it’s mostly the program itself but you can still have a smooth animation clean up. Even when I rushed with the in-betweens (as I usually do), it doesn’t look THAT bad.

ToonBoom Animate (a violent koopa)

I’ve been using ToonBoom for about two years. Most of my big animations have be produced by that program (Brock Baker, KoopaKungFu, Eddsworld very soon). Unless you own ToonBoom Studio, which I would not recommend, the programs actually let you make smooth vector brush strokes. With the Yiynova it’s even better. BIG ISSUE though, it doesn’t let you dual-screen, or allow you to use two screens. Every time I use ToonBoom, I have to change the Display settings to show only on the Yiynova tablet. Otherwise, the pen calibration is completely off. My theory is that ToonBoom only recognizes Wacom tablets and freaks out when introduced to different brands. I used to work with the Wacom Cintiq 12wx and had no issue with it. So it’s not really the tablet’s fault, I assume the ToonBoom experts just need to fix the issue since more people are starting to use other LCD tablets.

IN SHORT, Flash still sucks but the Yiynova makes it an easier experience. ToonBoom works amazing but if you wanna use it, you can’t dual screen.

This is all based on personal preference and experience, but I hope I was able to help you guys. I’ve gotten a lot of questions about the Yiynova with animation programs so this was just to give you guys an idea through examples. The Yiynova is a superb tablet and quite a steal ($650), and I’m a cheapskate who can’t be bothered to invest in a Wacom Cintiq. So if you’re like me and are interested in using an LCD tablet, then the Yiynova might a good option.
